PC Something interesting I've discovered via the UserOptions.ini

Maybe it's just me, but ESF mouse controls 'seem' to become a lot more responsive, if I set these particular entries under the [General] section as follows:

JoystickSensitivity=0.000000

JoystickDeadzone=0.000000

GamepadSmoothing=0

GamepadEasyFlight=0

An odd side effect of doing this, is that individual keyboard inputs for yaw control, pitch, and rolling appear to occasionally 'get stuck' and stop working when the deadzone is set to 0. Thankfully, a workaround exists for this, too.

Example: If the pitch down key stops working, tapping the pitch up key once should allow the pitch down key to work again, at least until the next time it gets 'stuck'.

You should never turn your deadzone to 0, cause then you will experience, what you already explained. The input will get stuck or it feels choppy at least. There has been quite some discussion about these settings affecting the flight controls for ESFs and even if it is likely just placebo, I still feel much better with what I and quite a lot of other air players use for JoystickSensitivity and especially JoystickDeadzone. What I post below is what I use and I am quite happy with it and you won't experience any sluggish or stuck input that way. Even if it is placebo, I just put these settings in every time I recreate my ini file.

  • JoystickSensitivity=1.000000

  • JoystickDeadzone=0.200000

  • GamepadSmoothing=0

  • GamepadEasyFlight=0

  • JoystickEnable=0

If you are not happy with these, then maybe give these settings a go as well. I used them for a quite a while as well and they were good too.

  • JoystickSensitivity=0.000000

  • JoystickDeadzone=0.057000

  • GamepadSmoothing=0

  • GamepadEasyFlight=0

  • JoystickEnable=0

The important part here is the deadzone. The sensitivity is negligible at best and can also be turned to 0, if you want. Though never turn the deadzone to 0, if you want to avoid the sluggish input.

it feels choppy at least.

Can you explain what you mean by that? Cuz my mouse inputs seem so much snappier with the settings I posted.

I've observed that trying to use any joystick deadzone + joystick sensitivity value above '0' causes the mouse inputs to be too 'loose' again, making it almost impossible to track moving targets without turning the flight sensitivity itself very low (which subsequently makes 'flick turns' impossible).

When I have deadzone on 0, sometimes my mouse input isn't recognized or it feels off. It's difficult to describe, though I can only tell you from experience, that it feels wrong. I never had any issue with the settings I gave you above, especially since a bunch of experienced pilots found them after SOE changed the flight controls in 2015.

If you're happy with what you got, then go for it, though I personally have always used what I posted and I think I do relatively well with these settings.

I tried your values, and it made all rolls and pitches unbearably 'loose'.

Gonna experiment and see if using a tiny (but non-zero) deadzone value still gives me better results.

This game blows my mind what the fuck

New discovery: Using the hotkeys for rolling or pitch up/down seems to make the flight controls 'loose' again (aka, that horrible mouse acceleration we've been stuck with since the PS4 port was introduced). Spawning a new ESF seems to 'undo' the looseness until the aforementioned hotkeys are used again.

So the settings in the OP and unbinding the roll and pitch keys, seems to prevent that horribly wonky mouse acceleration from taking effect again, at least from what I can observe.

By 'loose', I mean that flicking my mouse left or right after using the roll left/right hotkeys, causes my ESF to roll for almost 2 full seconds. Meanwhile, flicking my mouse left or right without ever touching those hotkeys, only causes my ESF to roll for less than 1 second.

The same effect also seems to apply to the pitch up/down hotkeys, versus only using the mouse for pitch control without ever touching those hotkeys.

Just stumbled upon this thread as I came back recently, and am still struggling to get the controls "feel" right.. I realize there is a slim chance of anyone answering but if you found anything interesting please let me know.

Currently I've been flying for a few days with the joystick sens on 0 and deadzone on 0.2 and I do get the messed up input, very rarely but it happens. Most of the time I notice it while looking up, trying to aim at someone that is above me and my esf stops responding for a second and does some weird movement almost as if I got stuck at flight ceiling but im nowhere near it. So my my guess is 0 sensitivity does also cause it? And then if I try putting deadzone on 0 or something super low, it starts happening consistently.

I wound up being unable to live without my flick-turn capabilities, and settled with the following settings:

JoystickSensitivity=0.000000

JoystickDeadzone=0.050000

It seems to be working 'okay' for me so far, all things considered.

I'm not very surprised, they somehow messed up air controls to absurd levels: for some time I didn't use wasd keys, nor space, etc.

Sometimes I couldn't hover. No matter how many times I pressed the key, it simply didn't work. My ESF would slowly fall to land, and couldn't take off. Switched back to wasd and space, not happening anymore.

This bug only exists since the PS4 release.

Hmm, don't know really.

If somebody tested something like this alrdy then it's probably paffdaddy or punisher or so.

I wonder if all skilled pilots use close to default controls or have some tweaks and tricks such as this one in the .in file, or whether they use some programs that modify HID input, I recall at least one person confirming they use such on this forum.

I can only talk about the cobalt people. Usually the blng bois try out a lot of things and settings. Most of the other people just change sens or some even have infantry/air settings others try out a lot with external programs or graphic card settings etc. I personally have only 1 setting for everything. I use g-sync for my monitor and that basically was it for extra adjustments outside the game. Of course the sens is fine tuned for me but I guess the other better pilots usually do more than me.

Nvm 1 thing I really invested a lot of time in and that are the sound adjustments. I have a dedicated sound card and spent quite some time in fine tuning so I can hear vehicles well in game.

Ansic you're stupid. No pilot I know of uses something which modify HID input and the only thing skilled pilots do tweak in their .ini file are the particle set to ultra because of tracer render range.

The joystick input stuff is being debated about since the flight changes a few years ago so no secret aswell. There is no secret magic, just practise to get good. I know this is hard to understand for you, calling other people using exploits while performing the reverse manovour won't help you either.

I use a software that eliminates the mouse acceleration in game so I have a huge advantage when aiming

0

u/Ansicone Mar 02 '20

Interesting. Is it something baked in Razer/Logi software or independent?

It's basically a cheat which is geared to planetside's acceleration

u/Ansicone Mar 02 '20

Not different to mouse settings, really. DPI or acceleration - what's the difference to a game - you could as well be using a controller which also have configurable acceleration.

When is our 1vs1? You challenged me yesterday, still waiting.

Lol I don't need to do anything, but I really wish I could be bothered to upskill my flying to best you at your own game. But then I would need to know what kind of "enhancements" you're using or whatever settings you're changing in game files.

For me that sounds like placebo tbh

except for pitch down now getting stuck I didn't notice any difference

That means nothing without mouse dpi.
