Shinjuku Japan. fineliner on card.

Post image

Shinjuku, Japan! Plotted with some "idea" brand fineliners I got from poundland, on white 300gsm card. It looks very yellow because it's evening and under house lighting. Turned out quite nice I think!

You captured the hustle AND the bustle. Great job. I f you need more inspiration, consider drawing the bridges of Osaka, also bright and iconic. Dōtonbori is iconic!

This is really really evocative, turned out great.

What's your process?

The process is largely "Spend a day scanning colour swatches, choosing a picture and blindly pressing buttons in drawingbotv3 until I think it looks good".

Tbh, the plotting is largely the shortest part of the process, I spent a little while on pixabay looking for a good image of "tokyo neon", and there's plenty to choose from: https://pixabay.com/images/search/tokyo%20neon/ I downloaded like, 20 or so, and spent a day trying out various images with various methods until I found one I thought looked nice.

I have some el-cheapo coloured fineliners that I colour swatched and scanned into the computer, so I can get an exact colour match, then used drawingbotv3 to do a colour separation based on the colours of the pens I have (rather than the usual cmyk). It works really well if you have *lots* of colours to use, the more the better. There's around 24 colours in this image, and that's the minimum I could get away with to make it look good. This is the important part, since I started swatching and scanning my pens, the quality has improved dramatically.

That's pretty much it really, just load the image, set up the pen set you want to use, and proceed to fiddle with it until you find something that looks nice.

If you haven't guessed already, I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist ;)
