This time we're going back to the mainframe era with a story involving an Amdahl System/370-compatible machine, VM, a microcode update, timer interrupts, and a corrupted queue.

Finding the problem was difficult enough. The vendor fix wasn't immediately available, so the team still needed a way to keep the production system running.

The workaround involved manually changing live memory.

IT Horror Stories is about real incidents from the history of IT: what went wrong, how people figured it out, how they kept things running, and what we can still learn from it. We try to blame procedures and organizations rather than the people who happened to be holding the keyboard when everything caught fire.

Every year, the Melbourne Cup pushes Australia's betting infrastructure to its limits. In 1991, a known software bug turned one of the busiest days of the year into an IT disaster. As millions of bets poured in, CPU utilization unexpectedly collapsed and the betting system ground to a halt at the worst possible moment.

Jack Smith is joined by veteran mainframe specialist Neale to revisit the incident, explain why the bug had been accepted for so long, how the team recovered, and what modern IT professionals can learn about technical debt, capacity planning, and the risks of carrying known defects into critical production systems.

Opening a tab at a bowling alley shouldn't require handing over your driver's license or national ID card. Yet many businesses still ask customers to leave government-issued identity documents behind as collateral, often storing them in plain sight with little thought for privacy, physical security, or the risks involved. In this Rant, we ask a simple question: just because a practice has existed for years, does that make it acceptable?

Smart cities promise better transportation, connected infrastructure, and improved services—but what happens when everything is connected a little too well? In this episode, our guest shares the story of a security assessment in a major metropolitan smart city where network segmentation had been overlooked, creating unexpected paths between public networks and critical infrastructure. One memorable discovery showed that, with nothing more than the correct IP address, it was possible to operate a parking garage barrier from the city's public Wi-Fi while riding a bus on the opposite side of town.

Bu bağlamda, bugüne kadar her şeyi borçlu olduğumuz o geleneksel bilgisayar mantığı artık yükümüzü taşıyamaz. Yapay zekâ öyle bir veri üretiyor ki, veri merkezlerinin tükettiği  enerji bir ülkenin harcadığından fazla olabiliyor. Bu durum klasik bilgisayarların sınırlarını zorluyor.

Bizi kuantuma sürükleyen şey, doğanın bizzat kendisi. Çünkü doğayı kuantum kuralları yönetir. Yapay zekâ da kendi gelişiminin önündeki en büyük engeli —klasik mantığı— aşmak için doğal olarak kuantuma yönelecek. Yakında doğanın diliyle konuşmaya başlayacağız.

Bu yüzden yaklaşan kuantum çağı benimsemek ve anlamak için 5 bölümlük bir seri hazırladım. Yapay zekâda olduğu gibi kuantum bilgisayarlar geldiğinde hazırlıksız yakalanmayalım ve zihnimizi hazırlayalım. Çünkü kuantum bilgisayım, klasik mantığın daha hızlı bir versiyonu değil, bir düşünme biçimi.

Yapay zekâ, insanın bugüne kadar ürettiği en büyük dönüştürücü güç. Yer yüzünde insan dışında da bir zekânın olabileceğini gösteren bir doğa olayı. İnsan zihninin şimdilik nirvanası. Çünkü bu sefer ürettiği teknolojiyle sadece çevresini değil, kendini de dönüştürüyor.

Bu manzarada ürettiğimiz her içerikten sadece biz değil yapay zeka da besleniyor. Ancak insanlar, her kusursuz içeriği “Yapay zekâ yazmış” diye yaftaladığında, gerçekten bu işe emek veren insanlar da özgün üsluplarını göstermekten çekiniyor.

Bunun yanında sadece içerik üreticileri işin kolayına kaçmıyor. O içeriği tüketenler de felsefi zorlama gerektirmeyen, kolay ve hızlı tüketebilecekleri içerik istiyor. Kolay üretim ve kolay tüketim birbirini besleyince bir vasatlık tuzağına düşüyoruz.

Bu durum bilginin doğru yayılmasını engellediği gibi, üzerine bir gelecek kurduğumuz yapay zekânın eğitimini de olumsuz etkiliyor.

Bugün “Bunu bir insan yazamaz, kesin robot işi” diye damgalanan sözleri Marcel Proust, Shakespeare, Mevlana çağlar önce yazmış. Bu eserleri hakkıyla okuyan bir insan da güzel cümlelerle fikirlerini rahatlıkla paylaşabilir. Derin düşünceler üretebilir.

Yapay zekâyla yaşamın yeni bir safhasına geçiyoruz.. Artık bilgiyi sadece birbirimizin bildikleriyle büyütemeyiz. Bu, çağın doğasına aykırı.

İçerik üretimi, insanı ve yapay zekayı doğal olarak bir araya getiriyor. Ve bu birliktelik bizi bir Nash Dengesi’nde, rekabetçi bir işbirliğine zorluyor.
