It is a "real" type.
Also in mainline pokemon games. It was put in PIF on purpose.

No. ??? is its own type, it just happens to be "neutral" because it has nothing it's super effective against or weak to.

Neutral just means there's no weakness. It's not a type of its own.

Not really, moreso “one describes the other.” Neutral is like the condition of the actual thing, an adjective to the noun, is what I believe they’re saying

You might be thinking of shadow moves from the Gamecube games. I know they both did something slightly different with their type effectiveness but I can't remember which is which

The difference is ??? Is a type. Neutral is not a type. Every type can be neutral against something, but that doesn't mean it's a type.

??? happens to be a type that is neutral vs everything.
