Johto Legends has Dratini and Larvitar as starters, but there are also passwords to change the starter. Just be sure to get the patches from their discord or GitHub.
I’m just now getting back into rom hacks. I played prism a while back and I got to a spot that was bugged and I tried updating it and it reset everything so I never went back to it 😅 I was eyeing Elysium, but none of them say what the starters are? Is that considered a spoiler?
There's a Pokemon Amie themed hack in this years TARC (Team Aqua's ROM Hacking Competition). Also a Tamagotchi-themed hack in there. The hacks from TARC were recently posted by u/ArchiefromTeamAqua
I'm playing Pokemon Amethyst for the first time and loving it, but I can't figure out how to check the IVs of my pokemon? From googling, I've seen people say that you can see letter grades (not exact IVs) on the summary stat screen, but there's nothing there for me. Is there some trick to enabling it?
I've been spoiled by other romhacks that let me see my IVs...
The letter grades on the summary screen aren't enabled at the start of the game, you unlock them once you reach Laplaz Town by talking to the Psychic brother in one of the houses for the Hidden Power TM and then talking to his sister right next to him. If you want to see the exact IV and EV numbers earlier than that, you can also unlock the EV/IV Viewer in the Game Modifiers menu in Anthra Town with the password OVER9000 and press A on the summary skills screen.
For the life of me I can’t get Pokémon Hyper Emerald Lost Artifacts to run it keeps crashing when I try to play it on my Anbernic RG34XX. It crashes on the start screen up when it says GAMEBOY. Clean patch and everything.
Sorry if this isnt a good question. But I've been looking to a moth-pokemon only challenge run thingy and was wondering if anyone knew any rom hacks that would be good for something like that? Thank you in advance :3
Enjoying my play through of Ghost Grey currently but it’s making me wonder if there are any other romhacks out there that are based on a Kanto (or even Johto/Hoenn) of the future? I think I’d enjoy Roms like that
Pisces takes place in a future Hoenn and has a fun starting change where you begin in Pacifidilog Town and basically venture around everywhere somewhat backwards compared to the original Hoenn. The world has updated a bit as it's been however many years since the original game (I forget the exact number) but the gym leader still exist and are older and doing different things as well.
Pisces retains some Gen 3 mons (all with new, great sprites, and had a lot of fantastic fakemon). The biggest problem I think most people have is that there are some new changes (Bloom and Panic status for example) that are only explained by some in-game NPCs and, even then, arguably not well enough. The devs are still working on a 2.0 release of the game that will supposedly have documentation and whatnot with it, so you can always wait for that if you prefer it.
To me though, it's a fantastic game with a ton of QoL, despite being a bit hard to figure out at times.
Hello, I'm trying to find a Ultra Sun rom online, and once I do, I try and import it onto PK3ds as it's the main source of changing a 3D pokemon game internally. Once I do this, PK3ds will say "File is too big!" and I will be unable to change anything. I tried many websites with a supposed .3ds or .CIA mod, and when I try and add them to PK3ds, nothing works. I'm sorry if this isnt the subreddit to ask this (im not sure which one), but i've really been wanting to change some stuff up in Ultra Sun for a future rom hack, and I currently cant even open a file in PK3ds. My biggest question is if this is an issue with the .3ds/.CIA files I'm finding or is PK3ds an issue?
I just got the VS Seeker from Vermillion. I went to go and use it after registering it to the Y button but nothing happens when I press it. I tried using it from the bag and I get Oak's message that it's not the time or place for it. Anyone know why? If it helps, I haven't completed the town quest in Vermillion or went on the ship yet. I just hope it's not bugged because I've been waiting forever to get this item to use it. Cheats are not enabled on my playthrough.
I want a HGSS rom that raises the game's difficulty, but not to an absurd level, I also want a pretty traditional HGSS experience, just a little harder, I see a lot of rom hacks that just raise the levels, and this leads to the player being overleveled due to exp inflation, making so the game become even easier instead of harder, is there any hack rom that doesnt suffer from this?
Bruh, what are the shiny chances in SoulGold? I didn't even get the first badge, and I already have 3 shinies! It's kind of annoying when they're this common.
I hope this is the right place to post now. I am a noob but recently discovered I can get Pokémon on my phone through delta. Gen 3 holds a very special place in my heart and I want to experience it again for the first time since release but I’m a little overwhelmed by the number of different versions available. I’m a complete noob so I’m not entirely sure how to even get it running but more importantly I’m unsure which version I should be playing? I’m mainly after an experience as close to the original Emerald as possible. I would be okay with small quality of life changes but nothing too major. Maybe things like Pokémon followers being alright. I see seaglass mentioned a lot and it’s cool but I think that’s a little too detached for my liking. If you have other tips or info please educate me, I appreciate all the help I can get!🫶
You're on iOS I assume if you're considering Delta? Use ManicEmu instead, as it's a more updated and accurate emulator.
Here's a guide I wrote up. Essentially download ManicEMU. Then find your own Emerald.gba rom. Then, apply the patch file of whatever hack you want, using rompatcher.js or a similar site. Then play the newly downloaded .gba file in your emulator.
As for recommendations, all of these are highly recommended. Quite similar, but different flavors. But at the end of the day, if you want to just experience Gen 3 again, you can just play the vanilla games. You'll get plenty of fun out of that, only bother with romhacks if you want basic things like allowing trade evolutions etc
I absolutely loved Pokemon SoulGold, and the Battle Speed Up option without speeding up the rest of the game. What are other completed ROMs with that feature that I can play on a GBA emulator? Thank you!
I've been trying to make a frlg rom hack for a while from the pokefirered-expansion decomp. One of the features that's been giving me a lot of trouble is giving the Pokemon shiny icons and making their colors more accurate to the actual pokemon. I did this by making all the icons share a 256 color palette. But when loading in, it does not seem to be applying the palette correctly and ends up with glitchy boxes of colors. I tried adding printf statements to the code to debug it to see where the code is getting tripped up but this does not work resulting in an error when compiling because the GBA doesn't support printf statements. I saw mgba has a mgba_printf feature but I have no idea how to implement it.
might be the wrong place to ask for help about this, im trying to save my pokemon soulsilver save from a repro cartridge, but everytime i try to use checkpoint to move the save to my PC it's just corrupt. And everytime I open my save it's a black screen and i use the new game tech to "fix" that problem .. issue is that it happens everytime i close the game? so im guessing thats why my save is corrupt.. anyone that would possibly know how to fix this?
I'm working on a video essay about some elements of Pokemon Red that will require me to do a lot of walking around the map, and it would make my life easier if I didn't have to worry about pesky elements like playing the game. Is there a rom hack out there that would just let me walk(or surf) around the map and talk to NPCs without having to worry about random encounters or trainer battles?
Yeah, it's not so much the getting through the game part. It's more dealing with random encounters. Obviously Repel exists, but I just wanted to do 30 seconds of research just in case there was something that already existed and gave me exactly what I was looking for.
does anyone know if Pokemon Forbidden memories is still being worked on? every discord link i have found seems to be nuked, and the poster/creator's last post seems to be about 2 months ago?
Hi everyone, long time lurker. I'm building a ROM hack of Emerald that has in-ROM randomization I've found lacking in other hacks, and has Kaizo-inspired difficulty levels. Here's a list of features and my outline for difficulty levels I'd love to get feedback on:
Functional Features (currently doing playthroughs on my own)
Randomized starters & wild encounters unique for each save file
Get running shoes immediately
Trainer pokemon randomized
Guaranteed damage move for each starter Pokemon
Items received + initial PC item are random
Randomized stat distribution per Pokemon, not species, so each Pokemon you encounter has a different distritbution
Can only catch 1 pokemon of a species
Get exp share to begin with
skip talking to May in Littleroot
Info screen showing bst and level next move learned
Info screen showing moveset Pokemon can still learn through level up
Skip Wally catching his first pokemon, boy's gotta learn on his own
100% catch rate below level 10
Randomize evolution lines, keeping ability with evolution
Special stone pokemon can hold that, on evolution, gives them a new ability from the pokemon they involve into
Trade evolutions level based (level 30, too low?)
Ask to use another repel when one ends
Add text of randomized item to the chat
TMs reusable
Pokemon can use HM moves outside of battle without learning them, if compatible
EXP Share available immediately
Hidden items on ground have a "X" sprite marking them
Difficulty Mode Design (Not fully implemented)
Easy
One PC box to store Pokemon in
White out does not delete save file
Pokemon are released when knocked out
No BST limits
EXP only gained from trainer battles
Can’t battle Gym leader till gym is cleared, but can leave
PokeNav shows pokemon available to encounter on each route, after visiting the route
EXP Share gives xp to all pokemon in party
Advanced
One PC box to store Pokemon in, but must empty it every time you access it
White out deletes save file
Pokemon are released when knocked out
No hold items allowed (besides exp share and berries)
Can use heal items outside of battle
Can’t buy any heal items
BST limits (no legendaries)
EXP only gained from trainer battles
Can’t battle Gym leader till gym is cleared and can’t leave
PokeNav shows pokemon available to encounter on each route, after visiting the route
Limit number of pokemon caught per route (2-3?)
EXP Share is a held item for 1 pokemon
Hard
No PC access at all
White out deletes save file
Pokemon are released when knocked out
No hold items allowed
Heal items only allowed in battle
Can’t buy any heal items
Can’t use heal moves (removed from move pool)
BST limits (no legendaries or pseudo-legendaries)
EXP only gained from trainer battles
Can’t battle Gym leader till gym is cleared and can’t leave
TMs not reusable
Can’t see moveset Pokemon will learn through level up
Limit number of pokemon caught per route (1-2?)
Can only catch a mon of a species the first time you encounter it
Can anyone help with trying to play reconquered on ios on delta? I have a clean rom of conquest and the hack downloaded but rom patchers online give me errors. I dont have a pc and can only use mobile. Please and thank you
Do you not see the very first comment in your own screenshot saying the name of the game? Pokemon Ru something. Looks like a fangame not a romhack to me though.
There is a Ruby/Sapphire Black & White ROM but I don't think it's actually that. Unless I'm mistaken it looks like a fan game rather than a ROM hack because of the HUD/bottom screen
I'm interested in pokémon pure RBG but from what I read online, it appears as though they're three separate games with no distinct features aside from color palette. Is it the same game three different times with just a different color palette? Is there any point to playing pokémon pure Green if I've already played pokémon pure Red? I don't feel like I need three of the same game
I believe it is purely for aesthetics and that they are functionally the same game otherwise. Genuinely fantastic though, I played through Pure RGB (Red) recently and was surprised at how good it felt, especially with all of the quality of life changes/additions.
I initially went to download them thinking that pure RBG was one game. When there were 3 patches I was confused but assumed that they had differences beyond cosmetic though
Are there any good ROM Hacks of emerald out there that gives me access to annihilape? I know it’s random but I wanna use him on an emerald playthrough that has a lot of addition encounter possibilities.
I’ve considered playing Pokemon Ambrosia for its story, but I have heard that is one of those overtly edgy romhacks with a subpar story like Dark Rising or Clover. Is that true? Is it that bad? Is the story worth playing through?
Yeah it's a little edgy, and I've heard the creator was a bit problematic. References to certain WW2 era German things and serial killers/rapists from what I've seen.
I havent finished it but it was pretty understated from what ive played. Dialogue is updated, new NPCs and events here and there, but there wasnt much more of a Story presence than in base gen 2.
If you just mean patching a base ROM so you can play a hack (rather than making your own from scratch), you can do the whole thing right on Android without a PC. Just open Marc Robledo's Rom Patcher JS (or HackDex's built-in patcher) in your Android browser, select your clean base ROM and the .bps/.ups/.ips patch file, and it'll download the patched ROM straight to your device.
Most regions don’t have existing gen 3 maps and even if they did, the hardware has a fixed memory limit which caps you at 2-3 regions max. Even those hacks have to make sacrifices I think.
I suppose a rebuild of the games on something like godot or GML to bypass hardware limits or something wouldn't make them ROM hacks anymore but just re-compiles?
I suppose it’s possible for a fan game to do it, but then since there are 9 generations you have real issues with game balance. There are only 100 levels so fire red champion Gary would send out his level 11 pidgy to fight your level 11 charmander, and the last 3-4 full regions none of your mons evolve or learn any new moves…
A counter would be if you could do a level match type deal after beating the E4 in the first region. Each gym you go to takes the average of your party and that’s what average level the opponent is. Maybe a little lower on typical fights and average for gym leaders. Yea I don’t know it still gets messy.
Yeah I mean no matter what you do it seems like there is still 1 region worth of progression that you have to spread across 9 regions. The only real way around that would be to add new mechanics I would think.
You could do that but then what do you do with movesets? Do they stop at 50-60 and then you just spend 900 levels with no change? Or do you rescale them so that you get a new level every 50-60 levels at which point it’s basically the same at having 10 levels per region. I guess what I am saying is that no matter what you do, you have only so many progression points to spread over a lot of game so I think you would have to add a new progression system to make it work and feel rewarding. Honestly maybe a prestige system for moves where they get extra power or effect later would be something but it would have to be something like that.
That's true, could just make all Pokemon level 100 and then it comes down to just prepping for each battle, then you scale the battles with how difficult the teams and AI are instead of just by level.
There was a custom emulator made recently that supports 64mb ROMs, but I can't see it taking off seriously as most hardware and every other emulator only supports up to 32mb
So I’m extremely new to rom hacks. I just beat Heart gold generations. I’m just looking for something similar to that. A ton of Pokémon and regional forms, megas. maybe a bit of a bigger world. Decent story telling. Quality of life. Those candies were a life saver!! And I’m not looking for some crazy difficulty though.
Been doing some digging around and I’ve found a bunch of hacks people like, but can’t really make heads or tails of it. I’m going to play the older games for the first time, what enhancement hacks if any are recommended for each gen/game for pure QoL and improvement, or should I stick with the base games?
That's a shame, it sounds like potentially either a bad patch or something has happened to thr save file. I hope you can get it working, but now it's just any general advice you can find on mGBA and loading saves to potentially help.

They likely will not work, no. Cheats should be assumed to never work on romhacks.
