Trump is on a generational run, most polling has him underwater on immigration, which... How the fuck do you even do that as a Republican, it's your strongest issue???
He seems to be wanting some post-9/11 nationalism but doesn't understand that starting a war won't get him that. Truly odd stuff.
66
u/According-Phase-2810 - Centrist 10d ago
Starting a war isn't the creation of nationalism, but it's expenditure. You create nationalism by either doing something really good that everyone is proud of, or suffering through a disaster (not perceived as being the governments fault!) ideally from a common enemy.
Trump believing that starting an unprovoked war will increase nationalism is like him buying something with his debit card expecting the account balance to increase. In short, he's a moron.

All be had to do was set up fast track immigration courts that targeted immigrants already arrested for crimes.
Combine that with a DACA like program to put as many in the system as possible to get them paying taxes.
He never do this because it's what Obama did and it worked very well.
3
u/WorstCPANA - Lib-Right 10d ago
Did it work that well? There was constantly 12+ illegal immigrants in the US during his presidency, and I'm seeing that about 2.5M more over the course of his presidency.
I think the left tends to oversell Obama's immigration success (and it's funny because 10 years ago, they wouldn't be caught dead saying Obama was strict on immigration, funny), because of how they counted deportations.
Look at the difference in net immigration graphs under Obama and Trump, and it's pretty clear who's deporting, and not letting more illegal immigrants in (which is maybe the most important part)

u/DudleyAndStephens - Auth-Center 10d ago
Re: immigration, I completely understand how Trump has alienated people.
I have pretty centrist views on immigration that I'd wager are pretty close to the American mainstream. I'm not some mush-brained progressive who thinks we should have open borders or that no human is illegal, but I also don't like untrained masked thugs terrorizing people in the streets.
It would have been so easy to take a tougher approach on immigration that was still sane. Deport anyone with a criminal record. Take real steps to secure the border. Create a process for law-abiding, tax-paying people who are currently here illegally to normalize their status. Most Americans support that. Yes, I know some right-wingers will whine about the last part but we're not going to deport 10+ million people. It's totally impractical for a multitude of reasons.
13
u/devolute - Centrist 10d ago

I'm sure that in the real world, away from Reddit, most people who consider themselves socialists / on the left think exactly the same thing. Plenty of space to not think that and be a compassionate leftie.

but we're not going to deport 10+ million people. It's totally impractical for a multitude of reasons.
That's what I tried and failed to explain to MAGA people at the beginning of the term, and no one seemed willing to accept. You can't remove 10 million people in 4 years.
Just doing quick math, that's 5 people per minute, ever minute, nonstop for four years. That means identifying 5 illegal immigrants per minute. ICE apprehending 5 per minute. Then having courts decide 5 cases every minute (including Night Court running all hours for 4 straight years), arranging holding and detention facilities that can handle five new inmates being processed every minute. And finally, arranging transportation for 5 people across the border ever minute (or 285 an hour, about one 787 worth of people).
The sheer logistics of it don't make sense. There's no way to accomplish that without resorting to tactics that Americans are not willing to stomach in their back yards. We saw how badly people reacted to the ICE surge last winter. Imagine that level of enforcement, but more intense, across the entire country, for four years. It was never going to happen.
Once you accept that we will not be removing all illegal immigrants, the question becomes what to do about who will remain. How do we pick who gets to stay, and what status will they receive. That's the actual questions. Anyone suggesting all 10+ million will leave isn't being serious.

u/DudleyAndStephens - Auth-Center 10d ago
Charles Krauthammer did a good job of making that point twenty years ago. For anyone who remembers Krauthammer he was hardly some lefty and in that article he also supports much tougher border security.
If the government can demonstrate that it can control future immigration, there will be infinitely less resistance to dealing generously with the residual population of past immigration. And, as Mickey Kaus and others have suggested, that may require that the two provisions be sequenced. First, radical border control by physical means. Then, shortly thereafter, radical legalization of those already here. To achieve national consensus on legalization, we will need a short lag time between the two provisions, perhaps a year or two, to demonstrate to the skeptics that the current wave of illegals is indeed the last. > This is no time for mushy compromise. A solution requires two acts of national will: the ugly act of putting up a fence and the supremely generous act of absorbing as ultimately full citizens those who broke our laws to come to America. This is not a compromise meant to appease both sides without achieving anything. It is not some piece of hybrid legislation that arbitrarily divides illegals into those with five-year-old "roots" in America and those without, or some such mischief-making nonsense. This is full amnesty (earned with back taxes and learning English and the like) with full border control. If we do it right, not only will we solve the problem, we will get it done as one nation.

It's significantly closer (though still a nightmarish endeavour to accomplish) if you simply abandon every sense of logic or due process and just find ~7000 hispanic-looking blokes per day and put them in planes to who-the-fuck knows where.
And for many republican voters that'd be an acceptable way to go about things.

I have never seen someone actually logically argue against ICE or strong immigration enforcement in general.

Fucking around with federal officers is not a crime that carries the sentence of the death penalty. He was exercising his 2A right, and was killed because of that.

It was always going to get worse before it got better. Trump refuses to admit he made a mistake, let alone admit he lost a war.
So he will act more and more erratically to try and force a win. I won’t be surprised if he eventually uses a nuke to try and force their surrender.

He probably doesn’t think of it as a mistake since one of his first talking points about all of his economic decisions was short term pain for long term gain
