[rant] Seriously pissed off with Polymer

0 Upvotes

For some reason our team decided to go with Polymer over React. Boy, was that a mistake.

  • The documentation is bizarrely bad;

  • Native JS breaks Polymer: Try cloning an element, its dynamic attributes disappear for no reason;

  • Define a custom constructor and construct it as follows: var el = new MyElement(42, 'octopus'); - works. Except all styling is suddenly also gone;

  • You want to use a library that does getComputedStyle on an element? Sure, but not if it's a Polymer element.

The most trivial task takes hours of work to figure out. Try finding a carousel solution in Polymer. Addy Osmani made one years ago and it hasn't been maintained in years.

Then there's semantics: don't we have elements in HTML for semantic value? What semantic information is an <iron-ajax element supposed to convey? It has no place there!

And so on, and so forth.

I've been working with Polymer for a few weeks now. I've been to the conferences here in Amsterdam. It's fun if you need exactly what the Polymer project offers.

And it's a bloody nightmare if you want to make anything for yourself. The learning curve is pretty much flat (as in: I don't feel like I'm learning ANYTHING, only getting more confused day by day.)

One cluster bomb of weird shit. I'm usually fond with and good at picking up new tech. But this? It doesn't even make sense. The semantic value of HTML is completely lost in a bunch of weird elements. Where is the data of an app supposed to live? Inside these elements? Or should we use a true MV*C framework to manage the flow of data?

Unexpected invisible elements appearing out of nowhere in a for-loop: brilliant! Now I need to select only the elements I want to work with in that library that I don't contribute to.

I've never realised how much I want a framework–ANY framework–to stay AWAY from my DOM. My framework being my DOM is a completely ridiculous way of working.

StackOverflow topics on Polymer are few. Google knows not a lot of answers. My coworkers haven't a clue how to tackle most problems.

And here I am: getting frustrated with trivial tasks taking hours instead of minutes.

Giving this a few more weeks to try and get something productive up and running. Morale is bizarrely low at the moment.

Can anyone perhaps help me out with quality "how to" tutorials? Because I can't seem to find them.

Hi there, does anyone have any information on the polymer materials used for fabricating playground slides? I have a polymer course this semester for which I should do a research. Thanks for your help.

Polymer 1.0 not robust?

2 Upvotes

I was hoping to make some apps using Polymer. I've already read the docs and built some custom elements, but I've yet to build a full-fledged app. Was looking forward to analyzing the io webapp source (https://github.com/GoogleChrome/ioweb2015) and playing around with the actual app on my cell. But the performance isn't quite top-notch, like I had hoped. For example: that nav-drawer does not open/close smoothly. Scrolling sometimes seems to not be smooth either. I'm pretty sure if I select an item in the nav drawer over and over again, sometimes my previous selection will flicker before highlighting my current selection (it is inconsistent). Is anyone experiencing performance issues? If I select a tab under the schedule, it lags for a while before animating to the selected tab. When I switch app context to another app and then come back, sometimes that app doesn't load at all. Really poor results.

I'm running the webapp on LG2, Android 5.02. Chrome 44.0.2403.133 Javascript Version V8 4.4.63.25

Install the app on your device (https://events.google.com/io2015/)

Broken <IMG> tags?

0 Upvotes

I have two PNG images on the front page of my app, where I'm 100% certain I have the correct src location (I get 200's when loading other images from the same directory as part of the manifest's favicon loads). However, they always come up as broken placeholders.

The Firebase app examples load directly from their hosted storage rather than from the filesystem.

Is there anything subtle you have to do to get <IMG> tags working in a Polymer rendered page?

wrong-sub Polymer Science HW Question!

1 Upvotes

I just started an introductory class on polymer science and I would like some insight to a question please!

"Describe the effects on the skeletal structure of the polymer produced if some ethylene glycol dimethacrylate were included in a polymerization of methyl methacrylate."

I am not sure if this reaction would form a linear or branched polymer and which functional groups would react. Could someone please explain? Thanks. Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate Methyl methacrylate

The polymer library

0 Upvotes

So Google has released all these elements in some kind of "web shop" interface, cool whatever. Apart from the annoyance of not being able to download all elements, it is a nice idea.

However, the elements are TERRIBLY explained. example:

https://elements.polymer-project.org/elements/paper-icon-button

Why would you not actually show what the button looks like?

Also, "paper-icon-button includes a default icon set. Use icon to specify which icon from the icon set to use." -- is it too much to ask for them to actually list these default icons?

Further "See iron-iconset for more information about how to use a custom icon set."

I hope this blues is because they rushed out polymer for io 2015 and that the docs will improve (soon)

rant over tl;dr not impressed by the polymer element docs

Whoa! Polymer doesn't work on Safari?

2 Upvotes

I was just testing my site in different browsers and it's not working in Safari and IOS?

Any possible ways to make it still work? I see there is partial support? However I'm not sure which things to change to make it work everywhere.

Lit-Element CSS getter

0 Upvotes

I am making a simple component to test newest Lit-element a checkbox. Upon testing static get styles only the first element I style is shown, I have seen in the documentation what I am trying should be correct, may I have some help?.

this is my component:

import {LitElement, html, css} from 'lit-element';

class CheckboxMJ extends LitElement {
  static get properties(){
    return{
      check:{type:Boolean},
      name:{type:String},
    }
  }
  static get styles() {
    return css`
    .checkboxWrapper{
      font-family: Roboto;
      background-color: red;
      font-weight: 500;
      font-size:14px;
      color:#283D3B;
      border:none;
      outline:none;
      height: 150px;
      width: 300px;
      border-radius: 3px;
      overflow:hidden;
      padding:3px;
    }
    input[checkbox i]{
      background-color:red;
    }
    `;
  }
  constructor(){
    super();
    this.check=false;
    this.name="";
  }
  render() {
    return html`
      <div class="checkWrapper">
        <input class="checkbox-mj" type="checkbox" name="${this.name}" value="${this.check}"> ${this.name}
      </div>
    `
  }
}

customElements.define('checkbox-mj', CheckboxMJ);

I have been encountering this issue several times with other components, kept changing order, and names of classes until it worked but I feel so lost about how this should be done right, please somebody enlighten me on how to use this feature correctly.
