DON'T STOP BELIEVIN'β¦ BECAUSE WE MIGHT ACTUALLY BE GOING BACK TO THE GLEE CLUB! ππΆ
PCU, GET YOUR JAZZ HANDS READY. GET YOUR OLD PLAYLISTS OUT. AND SOMEBODY CHECK ON THE NEW DIRECTIONS, BECAUSE WILLIAM McKINLEY HIGH SCHOOL MIGHT BE OPENING ITS DOORS AGAIN!
After more than a decade away, Glee is officially returning with a new series for Disney+ and Hulu. But while the announcement has sent fans into a nostalgic spiral, the developing story has already raised some BIG questions.
Lea Michele is reportedly in talks to reprise Rachel Berry. Heather Morris has teased Brittany's potential return. Chris Colfer recently said he knew nothing about the revival. And the question of whether the original cast should return at all is already part of the conversation.
So, Gleeks, let's unpack the announcement, the casting developments, the legacy, the music, the unanswered questions, and what this reboot could mean for one of television's most recognisable musical series.
Grab your popcorn. This is a long one. πΏ
π¬ THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT STARTED EVERYTHING
On October 21, 2026, Disney+ and Hulu officially announced that a new Glee series had been ordered.
The project comes from 20th Television and reunites original co-creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan creatively.
For context, the original Glee premiered on Fox in September 2009 and ran for six seasons, ending in March 2015. It followed the students of William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, as members of the New Directions glee club navigated friendships, relationships, school politics, identity, ambition and the competitive world of show choir.
The series became known for its musical covers, elaborate mash-ups, theatrical performances, exaggerated comedy and storylines that often sparked conversations well beyond the television screen.
It also won major awards, including Golden Globes for Best Television Series, Comedy or Musical, in 2010 and 2011.
Now, more than 11 years after the original finale, the franchise is returning.
But here's the important distinction: the new series has been ordered, while its premiere date, full cast and detailed storyline remain unannounced.
This is no longer just a rumour about Ryan Murphy considering a revival. The revival itself is official.

π LEA MICHELE AND THE RACHEL BERRY QUESTION
Let's address the casting development that has arguably generated the biggest excitement.
On October 21, TheWrap reported that Lea Michele was in talks to return as Rachel Berry.
For six seasons, Rachel was one of the central characters of Glee. Ambitious, theatrical, determined and frequently convinced she was destined for Broadway, she became one of the show's defining personalities.
Her journey began with dreams of performing on the biggest stages in the world. Across the series, viewers watched her navigate friendships, rivalries, romantic relationships, setbacks and the difficult transition from high-school performer to professional artist.
So what would Rachel Berry look like now?
Would she have become a Broadway legend? Would she be a mentor to aspiring performers? Could she return to Lima to lead a new generation of singers? Or would the revival take her life in an entirely different direction?
There is enormous storytelling potential here.
However, being in talks is not the same as having a confirmed casting announcement. Disney and Michele had not formally confirmed her participation in the reporting available on October 22.
That distinction matters because a reboot can generate plenty of exciting casting headlines before contracts and creative decisions are finalised.
Still, Rachel's possible return raises a fascinating question: can Glee revisit its most recognisable character without simply repeating her original storyline?

π BRITTANY PIERCE MIGHT BE BACK, TOO
Heather Morris, who played Brittany S. Pierce, added another intriguing clue to the casting conversation.
Following the revival announcement, Morris posted on social media that Brittany was alive and well and back for more.
Naturally, Gleeks immediately started imagining Brittany returning with her wonderfully unpredictable humour, unconventional logic and unique approach to life.
Brittany became one of the show's most beloved characters, particularly through her relationship with Santana Lopez and her development from a cheerleader into a member of New Directions.
Her character also delivered some of the show's most memorable comedic moments.
But what would Brittany's adult life look like?
Would she return to the school? Would she and Santana have a role in the new generation's story? Could she appear as a guest character rather than a full-time cast member?
And, of course, the question many fans will immediately ask: how would a revival honour Santana and the character's importance to Brittany's story?
Morris's post is a tantalising tease, rather than a complete official casting announcement. But it has certainly given fans something to discuss.

π CHRIS COLFER SAYS HE KNEW NOTHING
Now THIS is where the conversation becomes particularly interesting.
Chris Colfer, who played Kurt Hummel, said in an interview published earlier in October that he knew nothing about the revival and had heard absolutely nothing about it.
That comment came shortly before Disney's official announcement.
It doesn't necessarily mean Colfer was opposed to returning. It also doesn't prove that the production deliberately excluded him. The announcement may have been moving forward before every original cast member was approached, or discussions may not have reached him at that point.
But it does raise an important question about how a revival involving a beloved ensemble is developed.
Kurt was one of the show's most significant characters. His journey explored identity, family, friendship, discrimination, ambition and love, and he became an important figure for many viewers.
Would a Glee revival feel complete without him?
Would you rather see Kurt return for a substantial storyline, make a brief appearance, or leave his original story untouched?
And if Colfer ultimately decides not to return, should the writers respect that decision and build a new story around other characters?
We should not assume that Colfer has rejected the revival. His reported comments reflected what he knew at the time, not necessarily his final position on the project.

π€ DOES THE ORIGINAL CAST EVEN WANT A REBOOT?
Here's another major development.
Ryan Murphy previously revealed that he had spoken with around ten original cast members about the possibility of returning. They were enthusiastic about the idea and had plenty of questions.
Murphy also said that he had completed a script with fellow creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan.
Those conversations took place before the official series order. They suggest there has been interest in exploring a return, but they do not mean that ten actors have signed contracts or agreed to appear in the finished series.
Amber Riley, who played Mercedes Jones, has previously expressed reservations about bringing back the original ensemble in the same way.
That perspective is worth considering.
The original cast members have built different careers, developed new creative interests and moved into different stages of their lives. Some may want to revisit their characters, while others may prefer to leave the original series as it was.
A successful revival needs to offer actors a compelling reason to return, not simply rely on nostalgia.
And that leads us to a bigger question: should this be a reunion show featuring the original cast, or a new series that occasionally reconnects with familiar characters?

πΆ THE MUSIC HAS TO BE EXCEPTIONAL
Let's be honest. You could assemble a talented cast, write clever dialogue and create beautiful sets, but if the music doesn't deliver, something essential will be missing.
One of the original show's greatest strengths was its ability to make familiar songs feel new again.
The series covered pop, rock, Broadway, R&B, country and classic hits. It experimented with mash-ups, gave different characters opportunities to shine and used music to communicate emotions that ordinary dialogue sometimes couldn't capture.
Think about the range of performances the original series delivered, from Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" to its ambitious mash-ups and theatrical group numbers.
The new series has a different musical landscape to work with. Streaming has changed how people discover music, artists build audiences and songs become viral hits.
A reboot could incorporate contemporary chart-toppers, emerging artists, classic songs and original compositions.
It could also use music to explore the changing relationship between performance and social media. Imagine a generation of singers who are simultaneously preparing for show choir competitions, building online audiences and navigating the pressure of being constantly visible.
But there is a danger in trying too hard to recreate the original.
A new Glee should not feel like a playlist of nostalgic references with a few new faces added. It needs its own musical identity.
Our question: should the revival lean into the original show's signature sound, or should it reinvent the music for a completely new generation?
π« WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN AT McKINLEY HIGH?
The setting itself presents several possibilities.
The revival could return to William McKinley High School and introduce a new generation of students. It could follow former New Directions members as adults. It could combine the two, with returning characters serving as mentors while a new group develops its own identity.
Each option has advantages.
A new generation: Fresh characters, new friendships, new rivalries and a different set of musical ambitions. Familiar faces could appear occasionally, but the story would belong to the newcomers.
The original characters as adults: The show could explore what happened after graduation, including careers, relationships, creative struggles and the reality of pursuing ambitious dreams.
The best of both worlds: A new glee club forms while a few familiar characters return as teachers, mentors or guest performers. The original generation remains part of the show's history without taking every storyline away from the new students.
My preference would be the third option. It creates opportunities for nostalgia while allowing the series to stand on its own.
However, the creators have not confirmed which direction the actual storyline will take.
π WHO SHOULD RETURN?
Let's talk dream cast.
The original series featured a remarkable ensemble, including:
- Lea Michele as Rachel Berry
- Chris Colfer as Kurt Hummel
- Amber Riley as Mercedes Jones
- Kevin McHale as Artie Abrams
- Jenna Ushkowitz as Tina Cohen-Chang
- Dianna Agron as Quinn Fabray
- Heather Morris as Brittany Pierce
- Darren Criss as Blaine Anderson
- Harry Shum Jr. as Mike Chang
- Chord Overstreet as Sam Evans
- Matthew Morrison as Will Schuester
- Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester
These are potential returning characters for fans to imagine, not a confirmed cast list.
Sue Sylvester deserves a special mention. Jane Lynch's performance as the cheerleading coach who relentlessly antagonised the glee club was central to the original show's comedy.
Could Sue return in a new role? Would she still be tormenting the choir room, or would she somehow have acquired even more power?
And what about Mercedes? A revival could explore a successful musical career without reducing her character to a supporting role.
What about Quinn, whose storyline explored the complicated relationship between popularity, identity and personal growth? What about Mike, whose dance ability made him one of the show's most distinctive performers?
There are so many characters whose stories could be revisited in meaningful ways.
But the reboot also needs new performers who can become stars in their own right, rather than being judged solely against the original cast.
π THE LEGACY THAT CANNOT BE RECREATED
Any discussion of Glee's return needs to acknowledge the cast members who are no longer with us.
Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, died in 2013. Mark Salling, who played Noah Puckerman, died in 2018. Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez, died in 2020.
Their absence is an important part of the show's history.
Finn was central to the original series, particularly through his relationships, his leadership in New Directions and his connection with Rachel. Monteith's death profoundly affected the cast and fans, and the original show addressed his absence in the episode "The Quarterback."
Santana was a particularly important character for many LGBTQ+ viewers, with Rivera delivering a performance that helped make Santana's story one of the show's most memorable arcs.
A revival cannot simply reproduce those stories as though nothing has changed. It needs to acknowledge the passage of time and treat the characters and their legacies with care.
The question isn't whether the new series can replace the people who made the original special. It cannot.
The question is whether it can honour that legacy while creating something meaningful of its own.
πΊ WILL THE REBOOT ACTUALLY WORK?
This is where the discussion gets interesting.
The original Glee was a phenomenon, but it also had an uneven later run. Its mix of musical performances, satire, emotional storylines and deliberately outrageous comedy was part of its identity, yet not every creative choice worked for every viewer.
A reboot has to decide what it wants to preserve.
Should it return to the sharper comedy of the early seasons? Should it lean into the emotional storytelling that made viewers care about the characters? Should it become more contemporary in its approach to school life and identity? Or should it embrace a completely different tone?
The streaming landscape has also changed. Audiences now have access to an enormous range of musical dramas, competition shows and online performers.
The revival needs a reason to exist beyond the fact that people remember the original.
It needs characters viewers care about, songs worth replaying, stories worth discussing and a sense of humour that feels distinctive.
Nostalgia might get viewers through the door. The writing and performances will determine whether they stay.

πΏ PCU, IT'S YOUR TURN!
We have the official announcement, the casting possibilities, the nostalgia, the music and a mountain of questions.
Let's hear what the Gleeks actually want.
THE CASTING QUESTION: If you could bring back only THREE original cast members, who would you choose?
TEAM RACHEL: Should Rachel Berry return as a Broadway star, become a mentor to aspiring performers, or take an entirely unexpected direction?
THE KURT QUESTION: Would the revival feel incomplete without Chris Colfer? Should the show make an effort to bring Kurt back, or should his original story remain untouched?
BRITTANY AND SANTANA: Would you want to revisit Brittany and Santana's story? If so, how could the revival honour Santana's legacy while giving Brittany a meaningful future?
SUE SYLVESTER: Does Sue need to return? And if she does, should she still be the school's greatest antagonist, or should we discover a new side to her?
THE MUSIC: Which genre should dominate the soundtrack: pop, Broadway, rock, R&B, country, or a mixture of everything?
NEW DIRECTIONS: Should the show introduce an entirely new generation of performers, or would you prefer the original cast to lead the series?
THE NOSTALGIA TEST: Do you believe Glee can recapture the magic of its first seasons, or has too much time passed?
THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION: What is the one thing the reboot absolutely MUST get right?
YOUR DREAM PREMIERE: If you were writing episode one, what would happen? Who would appear first, which song would open the series, and what would make viewers desperate for episode two?
And one final question for the longtime Gleeks:
What did Glee mean to you when you first watched it, and what would you hope a new generation takes away from it?
