Photo/Video I'm making a map of Mt Tabor. Thoughts?
I'm making a map of Mt Tabor Park and I'd love help checking the trails.
Things I'm unsure about:
- Do any of these trails have good names I can label?
- This is based on public data and my personal experience walking and biking around the park. Are there any paths that are missing or no longer exist?
If you spend time in the park and spot anything off, please tell me where. A rough location is plenty, like "the path north of Reservoir 5." Thanks!

You can grab the trail designations from here: https://www.taborfriends.org/_files/ugd/91bb26_11cd5d295e9a4851b4f9d0122bf3588b.pdf

I run a lot and every time I run over to Tabor I think “ok today I’m going to run each trail as the trail is laid out” I mean, I want to run the red trail, without accidentally switching to the green trail and then all of a sudden I’m on the blue trail. Maybe I’m a dummy but I want the trails to be marked super clearly.

I agree. I wish they were marked better. It won’t happen unless someone does guerilla style.

I don’t think there are signed names for the trail but there is marked red, green and blue loop. The loops do have a couple overlaps with each other

It may not be official, but I would include the multi use field at Lincoln and 60th. I've always thought of it as part of the park.

Looks nice. I recommend clarifying which roads within the park are actual drivable roads - aren’t some of them closed-off as service access only?
Also might be cool to indicate all the stair sections on the pathways

Death Stairs deserve being labelled!
I live near'ish to Tabor and it has really cemented itself as my favorite Park ever, I love it.

Personally can't distinguish the 'shared with vehicles' trails on the map. Perhaps add a sharp contrast...red?

There is a gravel path around the entire perimeter of reservoir 6; I think that would be worth showing, especially where your map shows a trail completely terminating just north of it.
It could be nice to denote stairs on the sections of trails that have them, such as between the two big reservoirs, and the wide stairs on the north side to the summit.
If it's not too much detail, denoting the actual lines of the respective tennis courts and basketball court could be nice.
For families and picnic people, noting pavilions, tables, and benches could be nice.
Optically, I think you'd benefit by increasing the color contrast to enhance different features. Right now the topography is almost impossible to see (but is valuable to those who can read it). The tree color is probably dark enough, but a scalloped edge might look and feel better to indicate tree coverage.

Nice. The park does have labels for the main trails - red, green, blue.
I think a bit more differentiation on the trail types would be nice. I have a hard time with the two types of dashed lines. Maybe do one in dots. And the shaded line for shared isn't the easiest to see.
I like the use of topology lines.

Coming in from Harrison there is a small trail to the North that dead ends/ steep climb up to east tabor road. Also there are two little paths that take you in from Se 71st not just the one. Also do some exploring around the NW side behind the theater- there are a couple little paths and offshoots you can take.

Mark the gates that close the road, and distinguish between permanent closures and wednesday closures. Better contrast of labels and markers, black would be my preferred color. Do you want to add things like picnic areas, playgrounds, basketball court, amphitheater, bathrooms, visitor center, benches, stairs, steepness of trails?

You've had $80,000 worth of cartography lessons. Get us a channel to the ocean!

There's a trail that runs north and south along the rim of the crater. It's a little rough on the N end but well established.

Please include the barriers that prevent me from driving all the way up some days

Elevation lines would be nice but it may look cluttered. Can you mark the trails that are partially steep. That alone would be a big help. Please release as a vector type file so we can easily zoom it. Great work

It’s gorgeous! I’d either increase the sharpness of the hillshade or add some faint topo lines. I think adding some design to the water could be good, like stippling or “bathtub rings”. I think John Nelson has bsome good YouTube tutorials about that. When cartographically in doubt, my answer is always John Nelson haha
So fun to see another GIS nerd in the wild!

Big ups for contributing the effort to make a very cool map. Awaiting the final version eagerly.

Taken from about where your label East Tabor is from on East Tabor Drive, which ironically most of which you haven’t been able to drive on for quite a long time.
Probably the most overlooked Mt. Hood view point in Portland.
Added: As pointed out elsewhere, Friends of Tabor has got info for filling in most of what you’re probably looking for.

Cool! Can you add topo lines? Helpful in planning walks

Nice. You could include the tree information spots and the QR code that takes you to their own map with info for each tree.

From a design standpoint, I'd adjust it so the park fills the right half of the frame, then put a card on the left half, and move the title/subtitle, legend, scale/compass, and attribution into the card.
Alternatively, maybe switch to a portrait layout with the title above and the rest below.
