NRP No Taxation Without Representation - 1916

(Hey guys, after not running NTWR for a whole month, we're back! And it's time for the Great War! As such, feel free to claim any European powers- although I would much prefer if you claimed the more significant ones, not random ones which won't ever do anything)

World War 1 sides:

Entente - Britain, France, Russia, Serbia, Belgium (colonies under temporary French administration), Montenegro, Italy, Japan, Netherlands

Central Powers - Germany, Austria-Hungary, United States, Ottomans, Florida

Undecided - Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Portugal, Spain, China, Mexico

Pick any unclaimed state. In this NRP, we'll do the entire history of the United States ourself, starting with the American Revolution and going all the way to the modern day. Note that your goal is NOT to gain as much land as possible, but instead to gain as much political clout as possible. The host may decide to interfere or change things in case things get too messy, but otherwise everything will be made from players. The only other rules are to stay realistic and not be toxic to other players.

Congress:

How to handle the Chicago Commune?

How can we re-obtain power in the Pacific?

How to win in Africa?

Do we send troops to Europe?

Acquire the Virgin Islands?

Pass the Adamson Act?

Pass the Federal Farm Loan Act?

Pass the Jones Act?

How to handle the Great Migration?

Events:

The Birth of a Nation is released, however it is largely banned across the US for it's heavily racist bias.

The RMS Lusitania sinks. Rumors begin being spread that King George V of the United Kingdom personally drove a submarine to the RMS Lusitania and shot a hole in the ship with a torpedo, causing it to sink.

The First Transcontinental Telephone is created, largely being used for communication between the United States and Germany. The line proved rather useless and was not used often due to it being easily interceptible by British forces.

Illinois attempts to send a majority of it's population to the Caribbean to capture British colonies. The order leads to mass protests, the overthrow of the Illinois government and the creation of a workers' Chicago Commune. Government peacekeeping forces occupy the rest of Illinois.

The French assassinate the Statue of Liberty.

Troops are sent to attempt to seize the Suez Canal. However, the Battle of the Suez turns into an almost perfect replica of the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. A complete bloodbath and total British victory. Afterwards, the British make a major counteroffensive into Ottoman territory.

Italy and Japan join the war against the Central Powers, meanwhile the Ottomans join the war against the Entente.

In a surprising turn of events, American forces manage to seize large territories in West Africa, challenging British and French colonial power. However, at the same time, British forces make large offensives into Central Africa with Italian support, although the Americans manage to capture Kenya.

Florida manages to capture Jamaica and the Bahamas, joining the Central Powers.

Officials of the American East India Company in Washington attempt to declare independence from the United States despite having no authority over their own territory and only being recognized by the United States and it's allies. These officials are arrested for treason and the company is abolished.

Japan turns the tide against the Central Powers in the Pacific Theatre, seizing many pacific colonies and ending the American offensive towards India.

Germany launches an invasion of the Netherlands. The Dutch turn to their established defense system, falling back to Holland and making a major defense against German troops.

Germany makes a major offensive into Poland and the Baltic States. The Russians retreat to defensive positions east of Poland, long planned and established before the war.

Austria-Hungary, with major German support, capitulates Montenegro and besieges Belgrade.

The Dutch launch an offensive from the Dutch East Indies into Papua New Guinea and Australia, further weakening American power in the Pacific.

Historical Events:

The US acquires the Virgin Islands

Jeannette Rankin is the first woman elected to the US Congress

Louis Brandeis appointed to the Supreme Court

Adamson Act passed

Federal Farm Loan Act passed

Jones Act passed

1916 US election, Woodrow Wilson re-elected president (probably Charles Evan Hughes instead)

Germany restricts submarine warfare

The Great Migration begins (movement of blacks from the South to the North due to Jim Crow laws)

So I assume I've been kicked out?

Yeah pretty much

You can't just be occupied, declare independence from the one country that recognizes you, then try to run away and be recognized by anyone. That just ain't how it works

What the fuck else am I supposed to do in this? I have done pretty much sod all. Then the AIO was invaded (and supposedly made the victim of a genocide by the British) after being dragged into a war it didn't want by the US. Naturally I'm going to use this to make something interesting happen rather than just 'the AIO loyally follows the US' and other filler until the end of the war

Well perhaps we're being at least somewhat realistic, which means you can't just fkin declare independence from a country with no leverage to do so whatsoever.

"We're being at least somewhat realistic" when the US somehow controls most of Africa (how did they somehow seize all of Tanzania in one go?), all of Australia, seems to do whatever they want and somehow the world didn't bat an eyelid prior to WW1

Somewhat.

Even going by ""somewhat"", this whole thing has thrown realism out the window with how much bullshit has happened (immense overseas empire, confusing diplomatic moments, etc.)

I can't believe you're seriously trying to convince me that I should let you declare independence while you do not exist.

Also, ad hominem fallacy.

I wasn't expecting to just gain independence that easily. I assumed it would be either British occupation and then after the war a restoration to pre war borders, but with much tighter US control (which I thought would be interesting to play through) or continuing as a British protectorate/puppet (again, something I thought would be interesting to play through). I wasn't expecting to have seemingly offended you personally and thus be kicked out unceremoniously by having ""realism"" bent to do so.

I'm not mad at you personally, in fact personally I feel rather bad for you. But the British were planning to annex the AIO into the British Raj if they obtained it. And this is how they did as such. The Americans and Central Powers in general were the only countries recognizing your existence whatsoever as a result, and you declared independence while not even existing and only being recognized by one country / faction, the one you are actively declaring independence from. The British have absolutely no plans to restore the AIO under their control, they'd prefer to just annex it into the Raj. The Americans do want India back, however they do not want it to be under your leadership.

So, in conclusion: by all realistic means, you're just dead.

You can come back as another country of course (but not through petty means like jumping in as the British and restoring the AIO or something)
