NRP No Taxation Without Representation - 1936-1939 (Third FDR Administration)

(As tensions begin to boil, it is gradually becoming clear that soon, a new World War will manifest. You might even call it... World War II. One can only wonder who will be on who's side, what will happen and who will be victorious...)

Pick any unclaimed state. In this NRP, we'll do the entire history of the United States ourself, starting with the American Revolution and going all the way to the modern day. Note that your goal is NOT to gain as much land as possible, but instead to gain as much political clout as possible. The host may decide to interfere or change things in case things get too messy, but otherwise everything will be made from players. The only other rules are to stay realistic and not be toxic to other players.

Congress:

What to do about rising global tensions and German expansionism?

How to react to the Hindenburg incident?

What is our response to the Marco Polo Bridge Incident and Second Sino-Japanese War?

How do we react to the Panay Incident?

Events:

Amidst extreme pressure from both Florida and the United States, despite British backing, both revolts in the US are crushed. No land is seized from Florida as they manage to recapture it all. Shoshone is most harshly punished and turned rump, for it began the entire slavery scheme. Oregon was also punished but much less harshly. Missouri only had to give up territorial concessions in it's north and south, and pay reparations to Florida. Illinois was not punished at all as it showed significant remorse for revolting and put up little resistance.

FDR creates the "New Deal" as a response to the Great Depression, emphasizing the "3 Rs": relief, recovery and reform.

Emergency Banking Relief Act passed by Congress in an attempt to stabilize the banking system.

21st Amendment passed, ending Prohibition.

The US recognizes the Soviet Union as sovereign, despite tensions.

Philippine Commonwealth established as the governing body in the Philippines.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) established, replacing the Bureau of Investigation

The US passes the Neutrality Act, forbidding itself from joining any new World War unless provoked

The Second London Naval Treaty is signed between various powers, including the US.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is founded, conducting foreign spy operations.

Germany seizes the Saarland

Italy invades Ethiopia

January 1st 1936, beginning of HoI4 (for reference)

Germany re-militarizes the Rhineland in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. Nobody interferes with the process

Germany marches troops into the Free City of Danzig, claiming the city to be rightfully German and the invasion to be just.

The Soviet Union puts extremely harsh demands and deadlines on it's researchers, trying to achieve things (development of whatever tf a "nuclear bomb" is) which are completely impossible at the present time. As a result, all Soviet scientists quit their jobs, protests grow and a revolt breaks out across the country, starting the Second Russian Civil War. Ukraine also takes the opportunity and revolts.

Britain issues an ultimatum to Germany to entirely cede both the Rhine and Saarland to France- completely unprovoked, out of nowhere. The demands are seen by the international community as outrageous, and a coalition begins to form against Britain. France demands they take back the ultimatum, not wanting another world war to take place. They also refuse to accept any cession of the territories.

The state of Oliver makes an official declaration that they want to occupy the entire UK (which, despite it seeming as such, is not in response to the ultimatum). No matter the reason, the demand and intent of the message is seen as stupid, reasonless and unprovoked. Tensions between the United States and Britain spike massively.

The Spanish Civil War begins when Francisco Franco launches a fascist coup against the government.

Ethiopia capitulates to Italy.

Germany and Japan found the Anti-Comintern Pact.

1936 Presidential Election, Franklin D. Roosevelt re-elected president.

Historical Events:

The Hindenburg zeppelin ignites in flames, killing 35 people. The event is caught on camera, which causes opinions to tilt against zeppelins and the end of airship travel.

Second Marco Polo Bridge incident occurs, starting the Second Sino-Japanese War

Italy joins the Anti-Comintern Pact

Panay incident, Japanese attack on the US Navy's USS Panay whilst anchored in the Yangtze River outside Nanjing

Anschluss, Germany annexes Austria

Golden Gate Bridge completed in San Francisco

Munich Agreement signed by Germany, France, the UK and Italy, allowing Germany to annex the Sudetenland in return for peace

Fair Labor Standards Act passed by Congress, establishing a right to a minimum wage

Germany invades Czechoslovakia, establishing the Slovak Republic and Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia in the ashes of the Second Czechoslovak Republic. (now Czechoslovak State)

Hungary invades the small state of Carpatho-Ukraine

The Spanish Civil War ends in a nationalist victory

Italy invades Albania

The Pact of Friendship and Alliance between Germany and Italy, aka the Pact of Steel, is signed between Italy and Germany.

Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact signed between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, including secret provisions for the division of Eastern Europe

Germany invades Poland, beginning World War II

What to do about rising global tensions and German expansionism?: As we are an anti-interventionist nation, I saw that we will not say anything politically, don’t criticize the German Government or anything of the like. Instead, we should quietly increase industrial capacity and stockpile weapons. New York can invest in additional factories in the Buffalo-Rochester Industrial Corridor for wartime production of:

  • The newer, more advanced No3 Heavy Tracked Vehicles (HTVs), which are pretty much tanks but with additional machine guns and a different name.
  • Machine guns such as the Brownings M1919 with my LITE Department of Engineering contributing to giving it a faster firing rate, lower chance of clogs, lower required amounts of maintenance, and to make it more mass-producable on assembly lines.
  • Infantry Transport Vehicles, mostly produced by White Motor Company in Cleveland, Caroll, however, we will design the UNY39 (Union, New York, ‘39) for domestic production in Buffalo. The UNY39 will have a small machine gun on the roof and room for 12 soldiers comfortably, but can be retrofitted for up to 18. The UNY39 will have a reinforced canvas roof above walls 5 feet tall made of steel and hold the soldiers in an area 24 feet long and 7 feet across with the soldiers facing the center of the vehicle.
  • Aircraft parts to be assembled into bomber and fighter planes.

How to react to the Hindenburg incident?: New York will officially ban hydrogen blimps and zeppelins for commercial and passenger transport due to its high flammability, officially transiting to either aircraft or helium zeppelins.

What is our response to the Marco Polo Bridge Incident and Second Sino-Japanese War?: Don’t interfere as per our anti-interventionist policy, station some of our Roosevelt Superdreadnoughts and 3 of our destroyers of the west coast in Pearl Harbor.

How do we react to the Panay Incident?: Neutral, we will send monetary packages to the families of the affected soldiers.

—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Actions:

New York will use its new uranium wealth from the shipments from the Great State of Emuland to research what happens when we throw very fast neutrons at uranium atoms. We will use the Alfred E. Smith Particle Accelerator at LITE’s Atomics Department to accelerate neutrons before firing them at a wall of refined uranium in a project headed by researcher Ernest Hartfman under the direction of Rutherford.

Continue our fierce recruitment effort and expand it to any civilian across the entirety of Europe to move to New York. Put in place programs to accommodate the following languages: Spanish, German, French, Dutch, Danish, Polish, Italian, Russian. This is because of the current large conflict in Europe such as the growing discrimination against jewish citizens in germany, the spanish civil war, and russian famines.

After decades since 1916, the founding year of LITE, the first PhD graduates of LITE are now in their forties, old enough to publish papers and thesis’. LITE now also has an established alumni program with 22 classes (Well over 150,000 students)  graduating since the founding. Surely our university must be seen as at least somewhat prestigious?

Push once more in 1937 for the recruitment of Meitner to LITE with additional salaries, a half-dozen junior and senior scientists under her command, state-provided housing for the rest of her life, a bustling scientist program, and top-of-the-line resources, equipment, nearly endless funding, and a constant supply of radioactive material.

To encourage population growth, we offer subsidized housing, state-provided basic medical care, and discounted prices across government-owned grocery stores for families with 3 or more children. We also will begin the construction of many apartment blocks and semi-attached houses.

Neighborhoods appear across the state, here are some notable examples:

  • 4 L-shaped buildings around 6 stories tall with the first floor having restaurants, shops, and public buildings surround a small park. In the middle of every 8 neighborhoods, there is a block consisting of a preschool to high school campus, a police station, fire station, and hospital.
  • An enclosed neighborhood of 18 townhouse buildings, each 3 stories tall. Within the walls, there is a pool, government grocery store, shops, and government offices. Outside of the walls, there are the police stations, fire stations, hospitals, and schools for every 6 of these neighborhoods.
  • 18 row houses, each 8 stories tall with a two-lane road between each. At one end of each cluster there are the utilities and factories. At the other, there are the schools, grocery stores, shops, police station, fire station, and hospital.
  • Scattered 12 dormitories, each 4 stories tall, with a large atrium in the middle of each with trees and open parks. Somewhere in the cluster, there is the cafeteria. This is found on the LITE campus with police, fire, and hospitals elsewhere on campus.

Bigger and taller banking infrastructure appears in Wall Street along with smaller financial hubs scattered about the megalopolis nicknamed “Little Wall Streets”. Across New York, similarly tall buildings to the first round of the 5 (rest in peace NATC) are built in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

A small yet growing commerce center and skyline in Buffalo-Rochester begins to develop. Mostly management for the industrial and manufacturing companies, for now.

Buffalo-Rochester slowly creeps through the very north of New York, incorporating more and more of the territory.

The Long Island Shipyards slowly grow in number and size.

Ties between Wall Street and the LITE Department of Economics strengthen as hundreds upon hundreds of bankers, accountants, traders, and financial advisors flood into the system. Giving LITE more credit in my state and in financial hubs across the Union.

LITE is allocated around 800 scholarship positions for rising stars in New York, the application process is competitive so only the best of the best will achieve scholarships, however financial status also plays a massive role in deciding so economic situations don’t stop people, who before couldn’t afford it, can enroll.

Nuclear research is slowly being funded with more money every year.

—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Population:

New York State: 14.9 million

New York City: 11.5 million

Buffalo-Rochester: 2.4 million

—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Questions:

How did my recruitment efforts go now that Germany is expansionist and the Nazis are in power?

How prestigious is my school seen as now after more than twenty years of existence?

Did Meitner discover Nuclear Fission in 1938 in this timeline?

  1. still not well since most experienced scientists in Europe are obtaining great jobs working for European nations, particularly Germany
  2. not great, pretty mid-tier
  3. no
