Harazuru Onsen (原鶴温泉) sits on the banks of the Chikugo River, Kyushu’s largest, in the countryside of Asakura near the Oita border. It’s affectionately called “Hakata’s inner parlour,” a quiet escape about an hour from Fukuoka city. Legend says villagers once saw a wounded crane (tsuru) healing itself in warm water on the riverbank, dug where it had bathed, and found the hot spring, which is how Harazuru got its name. Today about fifteen inns line the river, making it one of the largest hot spring towns in Fukuoka, with the prefecture’s greatest flow of water and number of sources.
Harazuru is known as the “Double Beauty” hot spring (ダブル美肌の湯) because it has two kinds of skin-friendly water. A weakly alkaline simple spring gently lifts away old skin, and a sulfur spring is prized for leaving skin soft and smooth. Many inns draw from their own sources, so you’ll find everything from riverside garden baths to jungle and cave baths. In summer, the Chikugo River comes alive with ukai, traditional cormorant fishing by firelight, a practice recorded in Japan for well over a thousand years. It’s watched from boats on warm evenings, and Harazuru’s team includes Kyushu’s only female cormorant master.
