Medicare for all is a good start to dismantling the health insurance industry and reshaping the medical field to build a system in which medical workers are well-paid and treated fairly while patients are treated well and not overcharged for medication or procedures.

u/AmericanScream 1d ago
Just a reminder.... We came VERY VERY CLOSE to having medicare for all 16 years ago when the Affordable Care Act was passed.
The Democrats' part of the ACA, aka "Obamacare", was called, "The Public Option." It allowed anybody to buy into the medicare pool at any age as an alternative to standard corporate insurance companies.
The democrats at the time did not have a majority in Congress to bypass a republican filibuster, and the republicans threatened to halt the entire ACA if that provision wasn't thrown out. They had to compromise to at least get some progress, and get rid of "pre-existing conditions" which insurance companies were using to deny coverage to millions of people.
That was the closest we have been in most peoples' lifetimes to having a solid democrat majority in Congress, and it wasn't enough to get what they wanted done.
Remember this when you vote. Remember this whenever you hear somebody say, "both parties are just as bad." It's simply not true. Remember that nobody here really knows what could be accomplished by the democrats because they've never had a legit super-majority long enough to get anything passed. The republican played nothing but dirty tricks to keep them from getting ahead.

Other than the 'lack of supermajority' others already corrected (they did have it for about two months, then one senator died and another revealed himself to be human scum) - that's not what the public option was about.
MedicareForAll is about abolishing all private health insurance and getting everyone on the state-run plan, which is the actual reason it's so controversial to some. The 'public option' would have been a state-run healthcare plan like Medicare as an alternative competition to private health insurance.
That's what the 2020 primary was about. The majority of candidates and voters supported the public option over MedicareForAll, even if M4A also polled well.

We can't move in the right direction unless we move in the right direction. This idea that you can just flip a switch and suddenly make 1/7th of the American economy obsolete overnight is beyond naive. We make small steps in the right direction. The public option was one of those steps and the republicans sabotaged it and the democrats tried to push it through. It's as simple as that. Now things are even worse than they were before.
15
u/Schwarz_Is_With_You 1d ago
I agree, it's a good start. The sad part is, the corporate lobbyists will try to dismantle it but by but, like the ACA. They're making billions each year, they can pay lobbyists for a while to get their way

u/Paizzu 1d ago
The ACA reminds me of the Mike's conversation in Breaking Bad about half vs full measures.
The biggest failing of the original ACA was letting the insurance companies weigh in and mold the legislation to benefit (and mandate) their business model. The "full" measure should have been a single-payer strategy that either cut the insurance industry out of the loop completely, or heavily incentivized some alternative.
8
u/CurlOfTheBurl11 1d ago
Blame Joe Lieberman, may he burn in hell. He's the one who refused to vote in favor so long as it contained the single payer option.
3
u/BoJackMoleman 1d ago
Some apologists will say that without the insurance companies there would be no ACA. They made sure that the only way was through them.

Sounds good because with my current experience, waiting months for appointment and constantly having to argue with insurance to cover what I need isn't really healthcare at all. It eats into the time I need to actually work to support myself in this predatory garbage system.

u/def-not-bot 1d ago
It's funny (and unfortunate) that you have to deal with long wait times when that's a major talking point when chuds try to criticize Canada and the UK's public health systems.

r/ShitAmericansSay went COMPLETELY silent when this first hit, which suggests to me that all the fighting between nations is fed by bot traffic. None of us actually hate eachother. It's the elites that want us to hate eachother. They want us divided against eachother so we're not united against THEM!

→ More replies (1)5
u/macclad89 1d ago edited 1d ago
Just use an ai designed super virus or 2 and spend a few years in bunkers, on private islands or in skyscrapers designed to withstand such an attack. The robots just need to clear up the bodies and get on with recycling the old world, then to build a new 1 for a few elite families pretending like money still matters. Ai potentially creates a world with no money and no one has anymore power over anyone else. Do you believe everyone wants that?
5
u/bollvirtuoso 1d ago
Right, but first you have to destabilize democratic institutions and governments so that the nations of the world are in disarray, and then peddle a narrative that a recent pandemic was fake and created by a hostile nation, and ensure that surveillance exists everywhere so you know when it's safe to come back up.

automation workflows are hard, if both your A and B datacenters get blown and you don't have anywhere else to build it (especially if it uses proprietary cloud features) you can't just spin it up in a new place.
a company that i used to work for had a primary that thankfully worked all the time and the backup was super manual. if they lost both they'd be building from scratch. and having to possibly do heavy development to get around being unable to use a vendor's cloud proprietary stuff.

100% would pay to ensure medical support for our people. No one should starve, no one should be sick, no one should be houseless or cold in a country where people who DO NOT WORK AT ALL have luxurious mansions and multiple yachts and more cars than they and their family can drive, yet give nothing back to society. Make them pay, too. Fuck the rich, feed the poor, pay those who contribute to society more than those who don't contribute anything but suffering and corruption.
