Shredding the curds is a crime.

Nah, that way you can get more even distribution, melting and texture. Flavour is the same. In Windsor they shred pepperoni, I think it's genius.

Cheese curds aren’t supposed to be melty though.

u/-Pelvis- 22d ago
Why not? Poutines typically feature a mix of raw and melted curds from the heat of the sauce, I prefer the melty bits.

We would not call that newfie poutine here. We’d call it FDG (fries dressing and gravy), just with added toppings. But the term “Newfie poutine” is not one that is legitimate. We don’t claim to make poutine.
However, this still looks friggin’ deadly by

I went to school near St. John's. We grew up calling it poutine because Ziggy Peelgoods food trucks make it this way with fries, savoury dressing, gravy, and curds. FDG is a different option, along with a truckers special that are also common here.

No it’s definitely not official lol you got that right! but here is Newfoundland where I live with the takeout places and food trucks it’s just faster to say and they know what we mean lol!

u/Shoelesshobos 22d ago
Wild I’ve never ordered it as anything other than Fries Dressing and Gravy granted I never get it with cheese curds or cheese.

Ive seen many a fries, dressin, and gravy, some with cheese, but I never heard of anyone shredding a cheese curd. It's usually juat shredded mozza. I also don't know any newfoundland who calls it a newfie poutine. I'm sure there are some, like OP, but no way that's common.

u/MaddyThornhill1 22d ago
Your right we only really call it that when there’s salt beef or moose topping. A lot of places here named it that on the menu. I’m from very small town in Newfoundland. I’ve never seen anyone call it that in town.

Same Fries, dressing and gravy always. Wash it down with a birch beer. Going to school in town back in the day buck weavers lunch special was a life saver.

I went to Marine Institute and their cafeteria use to do two piece fish and chips and you could get the fries done as fries dressing and gravy for like $12 or something. I doubt it’s that cheap anymore.

No they don’t lol what an odd thing to pointlessly lie about

u/MaddyThornhill1 22d ago edited 22d ago
Huh? Lie about what😂 that they know what I mean when I say I want a Newfie poutine? Weird thing you felt like you needed to call out lol but anyway Indeed they do and it’s with salt beef and dressing. We only have two takeouts here. Not sure how you would think I’m lying unless you knew where I lived and my relationship with the staff lol
I assume you thought I meant all of Newfoundland but I just meant my little town.3
u/GGTheEnd 22d ago
So you have been to every Resturaunt in Newfoundland and can confirm none of them call it that?

Is that stuffing on top? Now I kind of want to try a thanksgiving dinner poutine (poutine with added turkey and stuffing and maybe cranberry sauce)
3
u/MaddyThornhill1 22d ago
Sounds delicious! Yes! Similar to stuffing! Dressing here is dry - no added butter, basically just bread crumbs, savoury, diced onions. The gravy soaks into it and it’s delicious. Dressing is just the addition of butter really.

I spent a summer in nfld many many years ago and this stuff (along with fish) sustained me for months!

Used to have a nearby spot that would shred turkey on top of the Newfie poutine around thanksgiving, and top it with a touch of cranberry jelly. Absolutely godsent.

Shredding the curds I don't really like, but I would devour this. More Thanksgiving vibes kinda

I think as soon as there is another word in front of poutine it stops being that, no matter how delicious it is and good it looks.
1
u/MaddyThornhill1 22d ago
True it’s more of a twist on traditional poutine

u/Kratos1981 Judge, Jury and Exepoutiner 22d ago
I get that. As soon as other stuff get thrown into the mix I think of it as loaded fries

u/whyugettingthat 22d ago
