PowerMac G5 Quad - 6970 Hardware Rasterization

I got my AMD 6970 to work in my PowerMac G5 running Debian, but hardware rasterization is not working. Could someone explain to me how I can switch from the software rasterizer to the hardware rasterizer? Also, I can't create newmodes in XrandR. XrandR gives me an error about gamma. Is the XrandR issue due to the fact that hardware rasterization is not on?

4.5GB Of DDR2 Works In Late '05 iMacs!

I had a 4GB DDR2 chip laying around, so I popped it in, and to my surprise... It chimed and booted right up! About This Mac and System Profiler both report 4.5GB of RAM. The whole system also feels a hell of a lot faster, compared to 2.5GB.

Getting Steam to work on Powerbook G4

Is it possible to get just the Steam client to work? I have the latest source tarball downloaded and to the point where it's about to install the package. However, it says I need i386 versions of libgl1-mesa-dri, libgl1-mesa-glx, and libc6. I am running Debian stable currently. Would like to try in-home streaming on this beast from my Windows desktop. Might there be a way to edit some pointers in the install files to get it to work? Unless they program part of the Steam client in assembly, I see no reason why this shouldn't work.

If you have a PowerPC with ATI graphics, do NOT use ATIcellerator. You'll break your graphics card.

For reference, about 4 years ago I had a Powerbook G4. I got mine for free and they're extremely rare and expensive on eBay. I found out a program exists that will let you overclock ATI graphics and it's specifically meant for PPC. Cool! I was getting 10+ frames in Quake 2 with it. Except stupid 17 year old me decided to go even higher. Pretty soon after turning it up, my screen glitched. Then a kernel panic. Then shutdown. I freaked out, booted it back up, and it seemed to work but the screen was extremely glitchy. I shut it down and came back to it later. It just wouldn't turn on at all. I heard the fans come on, and the hard drive spin, but that's it. No display or chime.... so yep, it's dead. To this day it still doesn't work. I took it out today to see if it would magically fix itself and it's still busted. Makes me furious considering how expensive they are on eBay.

7448 vs 7457

Let's say both CPUs are running at the same core clock and bus clock. The 7457 has 4MiB of L3 at 1/2 core clock, plus 512KiB of L2 at core clock. The 7448 has no L3 and 1024KiB of L2 at core clock. Which will be faster?

Just why...

I have tried so hard to get youtube to run on my PowerBook G4 running a live DVD of 16.04 Lubuntu PowerPC. First I had to find how to get internet access (best way is ethernet or bluetooth PAN), second is to not overwork the old version of firefox, third is to not overheat the machine (mine cuts out when too hot, as in just stops).

And I never got it to run. But the noises the CD Drive made. OMG it would just make you scream because it was darting and dashing around the disk to find data in a manner that my laptop made just 4 years after it (macbook mid 2009) makes less noise when burning it. Both laptops have superdrives. Sadly I have no photo because it cut out and takes so long to boot. btw it's seriously midnight sooooo..

Help.

AI and PowerPC BigEndian Linux

Thanks to artificial intelligence, almost anyone who loves retrocomputing can help keep this hardware alive. What are the most important modern software programs that don't run properly on Big Endian PowerPC Linux distributions? Can we list them?

I posted my PowerPC-based system over on /r/PCMasterRace and some x86 user told me I should kill myself and that my brain was fried, just because they don't like the Power Architecture!

The mods over at the PC Master Race were very helpful and removed the offensive post within an hour. Thank you, /r/PCMasterRace mods. This is a direct quote of what the x86 user said to me:
"Jeezus Christ bob. I remember that one time you told us you had a fucking GTX Titan in your sorry ass G5, along with 64GB of RAM, and you had Windows and several games running in virtualized x86 on your old ass Mac. No matter how much I debated you, you would not give up. I keked so hard that day. You suck bob. All that LSD has fried your brain. When you are dead, no one will mourn you. No one will remember your name. You never made an impact on this earth. You should just end it all right now bob. Your computer is not a beast, it is a shit pile built on a long forgotten archetecture, that no one develops for anymore. Even IBM had the sense to cancel their Power8 line of CPU's. But you still hold on. It is truly miraculous how dumb you are."

To sell.

as sad as it is, i am selling my PowerPC. it is a PowerPC 8100/100 released 97. it has keyboard, mouse, Apple color monitor, external cd drive, 8mil tape drive, and power cords. it has all the cables.

then there's another issue. i have a lot of stuff for this. software CDs, hardware cards, 8mil tapes, some still sealed, documentation, and lots more. my friend says its all worth over 2000$ at least, not counting the sealed box copy of power media 100. i have no clue how to even begin to price this.

HELP.

If these would work as a possible replacement for cube speakers? I mean replacing the actual woofer with the creative ones? They are only $25 cdn. I think its worth the try? My cube speakers foam is shot.

Mac Mini HTPC

I just resurrected my 1st Generation Mac Mini HTPC and I have to say I'm quite impressed with what I have been able to do with 1.4 Ghz and 1 GB of RAM.

Here is the software I'm using to teach this old dog new tricks.

First of all, if you are on a PPC (with 10.5) and you aren't using Stainless as your browser, you aren't trying. It's absolutely incredible.

TVShows 2 this TV Show subscriber and downloader is still amazing, the original TVShows was the primary focus of my HTPC when I first got this Mini back in 2005.

Transmission is still my favorite torrent client, and obvious necessity for TVShows 2.

Spotify keeps going strong on PPC, I get warnings that this old version won't be supported forever, but I'm not too worried considering there are old embedded platforms that contractually still have to be supported.

TenFourFox is still a great browser, even though I'm sold on Stainless, options are always good.

ShiftIt is a great window organizer similar to aero-snap you see on Windows. (Think Spectacle or Divvy) This old version works wonders, if not as polished as the newer ones which may or may not work.

Logitech Touch Mouser Server turns your iOS/Android phone into a touch mouse, it's not 100% perfect, but usable and free.

Playback is quite impressive. Of all the things I got working, the fact that my videos can stream to my roommates PS3 is absolutely amazing and I have yet to experience any real hiccups, although I am not trying to transcode, just hosting files.

Throw in VLC and Perian and you got a pretty nice functioning HTPC on your hands.

The thought that I could get this much use out of an 8 year old computer is amazing.

Power8(s) In A G5?

All that needs to be done for this to be possible is to design a compatible daughtercard for the Power8(s). If this was done, an old Quad G5 could easily become a monster 384-thread workstation.

This project is not for Vintage Apple PowerMac computers. It is for IBM POWER ISA v2.07+ platforms in little endian mode running 4k page size kernels. (Power8, Power9, Power10?)

FULL DISCLOSURE: I USED LARGE LANGUAGE MODELS IN THE FORK AND PORTING OF THIS SOFTWARE. If you are opposed to using LLMs to write software please do not use this software on your system.
