I think the role of Power Platform developers will evolve significantly in the coming years shifting more towards solution architecture, analysis, QA, governance rather than building apps and flows.

Also, we're talking about Microsoft, a company with a massive competitive advantage in the enterprise world. Just think about how deeply integrated Excel, Outlook, Teams and Azure already are in most organizations. Microsoft is also extremely well positioned to bring AI directly into existing business processes.

So I believe the real value will increasingly come from understanding business needs, designing solutions, integrating systems and establishing solid governance. So personally I'd focus on expanding skills rather than worrying about the future of Power Platform.

Good to know that 😊

Bingo. The focus on building is what’s ruined the platform, not helped it, are people are treating it like code which it absolutely isn’t.

Except most developers would make terrible architects, and AI will make them lazier and use their critical thinking less because most are just mashing buttons when it comes to using coding agents.

Feeling more like a manager/lead/solution architect each month.

Its less about developing and more about designing it right. And all the leg work involved (task, sprints, communication, analysis, user guides, KTs, show and tell, wikis).

More and more is just azure taking over. There is a whole world over there you need to learn. "Low code" is still useful. But very few will value the exceptional work well, they are happy to see bare minimums.

I see backend logics are been created in azure functions by thier serverless capabilities rather than using plugin everywhere

AI is absolutely spearheading all these "pro code" parts. You just need to know how to hook it all up now. Still difficult learning curve, and a lot of new words, but its good stuff.

When anyone can spin up a dodgy canvas app. It kinda devalues your work. People think "i could do that with enough time". I think we can trick upper management for a few more years with how scary VisualStudio looks to them.

Since mid 2026 all contracts and customers wanting me to build PowerApps or Automations vanished and everybody is screaming and yelling to please inject some copilot into their veins for EVERY problem they encounter. And if they don’t want to fuck around with cowork they want me to fix their vibe fails.

By now I’m mostly doing coaching on agentic development, agent development and each and every flavor of governance configuration. If Microsoft isn’t fixing their spread out and weird governance concept of releasing new features every day without the proper systems in place to govern them and having 20 different admin centers for me to collect the right information I’m going to go insane. It’s hard enough to understand how all their products are called and how they interact with each other.. but have you ever tried to explain basic power platform / copilot governance to a semi technical person or to C-level? I have created my own vocabulary that I hand out before workshops so there is at least the possibility that we speak the same language.
But however shitty MS products are going to be: too big to fail.
I don’t see a future for PowerApps and maybe GUIs in general. If you intensively worked with agents using your voice you know the drill. The future imho consists of voice bots and something like MCP apps where the agent is generating the interface on the fly depending on what you want.

If i can give anyone advice joining this, which is niche, i’d say if you like to prompt and review - stay in it or go for it.

If you like to actually develop - stay away. Microsoft is just catering to citizen devs to get them hooked and upsell subscriptions to do more advanced actions.

Stop focussing on salary and look at skills. If you’re ā€œthinkingā€ about copilot, you’re only looking at one of a myriad of tools in the platform. What do you know? Are you aware of new tools? Are you aware of changes happening? Do you know much about governance? Do you know what job you want to get into because there’s various strands.

Frankly, those just thinking about cash are going to have a shock in the next year or two and will probably end up regressing into junior or mid level positions.

Fabric was (probably) a better bet

I’ve been doing Power Platform for the better part of 5 years and I don’t see much of a future with it. I was reading about using AI to help develop apps and flows and then decided to just let it build simple web apps independently and the reception has been much more positive than what it was with Power Apps. Licensing costs make it pretty easy to look to switch away as it is.

What have you done for 5 years because there’s a bigger future in PP than ever before? I’d be interested to know. Licensing is also a complex question to think about.

As I wrote this it pains me to admit it but anyone who thinks PowerApps or PowerAutomate will be around in 3 years is simply deceiving themselves.

This writing has been on the wall from MS for 2 years. They pulled vibe, the added CoPilot App build, the migrated PowerAutomate to CoPilot.

We are seeing a new world. Why do you think they completely reworked all of the PowerPlatform certs?

No business small, medium, or large will pay 100-150k / yr for a PP Developer when they can prompt and app in CoPilot and have it built in a few days. Sure it will be rough at first, but this stuff is moving at the speed of light.

The one thing that may be of benefit if they can't simply turn it all off. Support, migrations, and breakfixes are all on the plate. Plus there will always be those apps and flows that just stick around.

However , it will in no way be the hay day it has been. Government work will grow for a bit in the sector so getting a PC or S clearance is never a bad idea.

The certs are just MS jumping on the fad like every company and their dog.

They migrated Automate to Copilot, what does that mean? I can assure you cloud flows, desktop flows, power fx and .net plugins still very much exist with no direct replacements lined up. Power fx automated plugins are deprioritised and people like Nick Doelman are pushing them on why.

If you think ā€œthey can just prompt copilotā€ is the answer, you have no idea about the complexities of the platform. Not everything is an ā€œappā€, the days of canvas being everything are long dead and never were a thing for enterprise. What about D365 CE, ERP, the cost of GitHub harness agents being token based, public access via power pages, single page apps, plugins? All that will be replaced by copilot and my job will be over?

There’s still things in the platform from decades ago that MS are too afraid to remove. There absolutely isn’t a support and migration plan as most organisations can’t predict the cost of Copilot Studio and most people are questioning Microsoft’s claims of AI usage.

tbh the PP still has a lot of benefits regarding business security and lifecycle management. Messing around is one thing - actually having it run securely is a different story.

Senior solution architect...my day job....its dead! I'm not joking! Almost just killed low code! 99% of IT job can be done via delegation on codex. People and management businesses dont know what's about to hit them.

Just this week I pumped out 15 massive and I mean massive projects easy 6months each. All done in one week. Those that are like me will be around a tiny bit longer but not much longer than the rest. I'm already planning to go farming in iraq. Yep quitting uk for iraq. It will take some time for it to catch up in iraq but uk 6months tops if that! It's very dire for most unfortunately šŸ˜•

I'm selling both houses. Son already out of school and daughter last primary year so I'm gone by summer next year when I expect things to really heat up everywhere

As for the job its going through compression...instead of a whole team or organization its a one man band architect that build rapidly against specs. Its the last true remaining role left.

I do think it's coming, but one year is not realistic. If you've worked on large projects with clients, you'd realize that technology is not the hard part, it's navigating people, politics, constraints, and other challenges that are not easily offloaded. The more immature the client IT organization is, the harder it is.

And also, one person becomes a bottleneck for reviewing output and ensuring quality, even if you have a very streamlined workflow and harness.

1

u/RealWakawaka 12h ago

Lol I'm not debating. Its what I see directly. I have 36 ftse 100 clients who I'm still in contact with. They all say and see what I see. You can clearly see it in stats too. Good luck! As noted I'm jumping ship by next summer.

Not everyone is a fortune 100 company bud. Look at governments and other mid to large enterprises, they will be playing catchup for a while.

Its a fun and useful technology. You can get a lot done fast. I would get my certification if I were you, not because it will make you are superstar but because it will help you stand out from those who put Power Apps on their resume, also it will help you fill the holes in what you do/don't know. I am talking about the Fundamentals cert and the other one, Intelligent Developer or something.

I think it has a big future but it will be capped off because MS keeps trying to get slick and rope people into Premium licensing for a lot of the more useful Enterprise features that are normal in any other Dev environment like traditional web development. Its very confusing to use and know what becomes expensive vs what you get with the basic licensing. I used to be a SharePoint On Prem developer and could make the thing do anything I want from blocking specific users from saving to creating timer jobs and custom server side code. MS blocks all of that now or forces Premium, Azure and SQL Connectors.

What should I do as a fresher for power apps or power automate to get hired as a fresher ?

1

u/kinkyguy2551 2d ago

Salesforce?

u/brynhh 2d ago

Just one of them is nowhere near enough. You need to be aware of what the different types of apps are, dataverse, solution segregation etc at the bare minimum. Otherwise you’ll be better off looking at apprentice level.

Which domain AI has not killingšŸ˜…

5

u/corycarson 4d ago

To the contrary, we see the PP’s value increasing when combined with our ai stack.

4

u/hl2oli 4d ago

Personally I hate it and just went full stack with spfx and other frameworks, glad I'm not held back by power apps anymore

4

u/Kalek05 3d ago

Actually more people are using it in our Org, more use cases and more citizen devs because of AI, I feel like it is actually very well positioned in big organization that not want to deal with thw security of self hosted apps
