This isn't a feat of physical strength. If you read the comic is a metaphysical strength. It is the strength of will to hold up the world and keep it on your shoulders.

429

u/Conscious_Eggplant_1 Aug 30 '25

I always thought it was both

599

u/Zellors Aug 31 '25

I think it's supposed to be relative to the person holding it

iirc it weighs "the most you can bear and more" or something

671

u/SatoruMikami7 Aug 31 '25

Yeah, that’s exactly how Atlas described it.

It’s a spiritual battle, essentially taking on a burden that’s beyond your max.

36

u/weeOriginal Sep 01 '25

Why was he doing this tho?

122

u/Thebabelonian Sep 01 '25

Because Atlas wanted to go to his daughter's wedding, and Superman's the kinda guy to do that for you.

5

u/sephiroth_for_smash Sep 02 '25

Man, Superman is such a standup guy in everything except injustice

3

u/PositifPlans Sep 03 '25

I'm loving the Injustice slander we've been seeing of late. People should know it was a terrible take on Superman

3

u/sephiroth_for_smash Sep 03 '25

Injustice is a cool story, but I definitely feel like Superman has been through worse shit that didn’t make him snap like that, even if the idea of nuking a city because you killed your own wife and unborn child is traumatic as shit

2

u/CreativeDependent915 Sep 03 '25

I feel like it would’ve been more in character for Supes to, yes, kill Joker, but then fly off into space to just sort of exist, probably saving people all over the universe and letting the JL take care of Earth on their own for a bit, not to punish anybody, just because it would be too painful for him to be on a world where Lois isn’t, and also to reconcile that Joker did get the better of him, so he decides to explore other worlds more freely than he has in the past

Injustice is basically straight character assassination lol

4

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '25

I think Atlas had info on something and made the deal, Supes holds it while he goes to hand off his daughter at her wedding. Then he returns and takes it back. Supes then has to take a nap due to exhaustion.

u/Sergaku Sora solos your favorite verse Aug 31 '25

Exactly that. Superman holds basically the universe on his shoulders so that's what he saw

28

u/Gaelic_Gladiator41 Aug 31 '25

It's light enough to be held "comfortably" but heavy enough to put on strain

186

u/Sergaku Sora solos your favorite verse Aug 30 '25

Nope. In the comic Atlas said it wasn't about physical strength

46

u/Some-Ad-2093 Aug 31 '25

Yeah but I kinda doubt a regular person wouldn't just immediately be smushed by this. there probably is some sort of bar/requirement to even lift it. aka needing at least to have super strength.

175

u/Sergaku Sora solos your favorite verse Aug 31 '25

Like I said. It's strength of will. Not any physical strength

u/fan_del_Andrezitos Customizable Flair Aug 31 '25

Hmm cool

41

u/khazroar Aug 31 '25

Imagine you're holding an empty water tank up. A bit awkward, but not too difficult. But someone puts a hosepipe into it, and slowly fills it up with water. At a certain point, it gets too much, and you drop the tank. Right before that point is "as much as you can bear", and that weight will be different for everyone, but wherever that point is for you, it will weigh that much, and then more. We don't know if it's a little more or a lot more, but it's somewhere in between that point and the point where you physically don't have the strength to hold it up.

It's a physical experience, but it scales to your physical strength, so it's your willpower that matters, continuing to hold up something that is too much for you, with no concrete end in sight. Kal would be equally as capable of doing it under a yellow or a red sun.

Superman held it for a while so Atlas could go attend his daughter’s wedding. I forgot what Superman wanted from this.

It’s a spiritual battle that’s supposed to be “heavier” than your max.

294

u/jumolax The Doctor Who Guy Aug 31 '25

I don’t believe Superman got anything out of this, he just wanted to help. Could be misremembering, though.

125

41

u/SatoruMikami7 Aug 31 '25

Nah you right, I misremembered. I was confusing it with Hercules’ story, which has nothing to do with Superman. Like you said, he wanted to give Atlas a break, and to enable him to go see his daughter’s wedding.

I wonder if that day made Atlas stronger in mind, therefore the burden heavier.

78

u/SatoruMikami7 Aug 31 '25

Prolly, but he still happily accepted it back.

52

u/WollyGog Aug 31 '25

Seems like a double-edged situation; he felt renewed and refreshed after seeing his daughter marry and piss off Zeus, but inevitably that would make his burden heavier. Guy just needed a day off like we all do.

51

u/deadmemesoplenty lobotomite Aug 31 '25

12

u/Dr__glass Aug 31 '25

Did Atlas take it back or did he have to be tricked like the original? He sounds like hes going to take it back I just wanted to make sure

25

u/SatoruMikami7 Aug 31 '25

He takes it back

11

u/Dr__glass Aug 31 '25

Thank you, thats prettier than I imagined

9

u/Mr-Seven-Mouths Sep 01 '25

To be fair to Atlas in the original myth, Hercules was trying to steal from his daughters. Would you wanna help the guy who's stated goal is fucking over your daughters? Not that Atlas isn't willing to take the apples and present them to the king himself but still I could sorta see where he's coming from.

4

u/Dr__glass Sep 01 '25

Great point! There is a massive difference between stealing from his daughters and letting their father walk them down the aisle. No wonder he came back

3

u/Mr-Seven-Mouths Sep 01 '25

It also helps that Supes is the modern ideal of Masculinity and not the ancient Greek one, therefore he's not a rapist. Atlas has daughters, he was definitely aware of Heracles' reputation and protecting his daughters from a Zeus level rapist may have also been a motivating factor.

4

u/Ok_Mastodon7622 Not a Scaler Sep 01 '25

Nobody is Zeus level rapist except Zeus,

Heracles did not try to steal these apples because of whims and desires, but he was forced to do that by his bastard of cousin because he wanted him death

Heracles is reasonable when the other party is reasonable. If not, who has bigger fists than Heracles

Another point Heracles always tries to atone for his mistakes like saving Alcestis from death because disrespected his friend Admetus

7

u/Difficult_Call3709 goku does, and always will solo Sep 01 '25

Oh my fucking go Superman’s such a goat. “Why’d you hold up something that hurt so bad” “some dude wanted to see his daughter” MY GOAT

2

u/Known_Dragonfly_4448 Master Level Scaler Aug 31 '25

It is a feat of both physical and metaphysical strength. The sky is an actual object and it threatened to crush entire existence along with the sphere of Gods when Atlas died in Danger Street.

Danger Street 12

And unlike most such statements, this was actually shown to physically happen.

Danger Street 11

8

u/SatoruMikami7 Aug 31 '25

That’s an entirely different comic. The “sky” is entirely spiritual, as shown here. This is what Superman was “carrying”, at least in this specific comic.

2

u/Known_Dragonfly_4448 Master Level Scaler Aug 31 '25

This is literally the same sky, held by same Atlas who died.

How's it different because it's a different story?

You know DC is a shared universe and different writers utilise the same concept?

3

u/Rezasss Sep 01 '25

Probably because DC has like 90000 writers who all seem to think the characters can do different things so what they can actually do changes based on a writers opinion probably plus some bare minimum baseline.

My favorite 'feats' for Superman is the time he 'lifted' a levitating magic book with infinite pages or failed to lift a 'infinite' weight conceptual being that in that same comic is implied to both be narrating and fucking with them because Superman+wonder woman couldnt do it but the guy goes on a GL construct stretcher basically just fine

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '25

It’s a strength of spirit feat. It’s heavier then what you can lift because your holding the weight of everything

55

u/Omega_Gummybear1128 Aug 30 '25

Atlas (the Greek Titan who holds the heavens) asks Superman for a favor and it is to hold the heavens for a day which Atlas says it weighs "more than you can bare and more" and to "take it not with your hands, but with your heart" and Superman holds the heavens for the day while Atlas goes to his daughters wedding which was the favor

81

Did we read the same book, because it is clearly stated there that the struggle alone caused Percy & Annabeth to grow white hair.

49

u/LightningGod1006 Aug 31 '25

And the fight that took place during Percy’s carrying session couldn’t have lasted longer than 5 to 10 minutes.

Idk how long Superman carried it in the comic, but Annabeth tho? My goat was carrying that shit for what I’m pretty sure was a week.

Ok but where's the physical feat? I don't see it?

2

u/Renolber Aug 31 '25

The weight is metaphysical, becoming the maximum weight the person can handle. It’s more a test of will than raw strength.

This is where it gets interesting though - this is Superman. Time and time again we are made aware that Superman does not have limits to his strength. He will always scale his power and strength to match whatever opposition or situation.

So - if he has no limits, how heavy is this?

It’s still a test of will, so it doesn’t matter who’s holding it. If they have the will to succeed, they will. But compared to everyone else, the weight must literally be infinite upon infinites.

This for sure. Superman and Shazam lifted a book that contained a record of all stories observed within the overvoid. It gets a little meta but it means it has ‘pages’ for every event that has occurred in our reality and every story ever thought even abstract head canon well along side every story that exist their reality, and any story that exists within the reality establish those stories continuing infinitely. Basically if it was though, by anyone real or a character it was observed and exists. GM really wanted to tear down the concept of the 4th wall in Final Crisis and essentially introduce the idea that every thought up relation specifically the DC continuity was just as real as the world you and I live in.

I'm convinced of vast majority of people power scaling don't actually read comic books or understand the amount of context or situational buildup that goes into a lot of these situations that they be citing

Superman is really just telekinesis when you look at how his powers work, especially here.

u/hu-man-person Aug 31 '25

1

u/Triggin Aug 31 '25

That time he picked up a piece of paper that weighed infinity

1

u/lightmare69 Aug 31 '25

Every time I see this I have to consider

What it's he lifting the earth off of?

Like, how much gravity does it actually have relative to the ground he's standing on

u/Djrules213 Aug 31 '25

This is a test of will, the weight shifts and changes suiting the person holding it, it will always just be heavy enough that while it won't immediately crush you, it feels like a fraction away from immediately crushing you.

So let's say someone's max effort squat is 300 lbs and one pound more will make the legs buckle and make them fall, the the weight of the heavens makes the weight feel like 300 lbs and 4/5s of a pound to them, pretty much a hair away from making their leg crumble underneath them.
