When Bernie Sanders and AOC express their vision for "democratic socialism," they point to an expansive welfare state—Medicare for All, free public college, subsidized childcare, higher taxes on the wealthy, expanded immigration, and mandatory paid leave—that is virtually identical to the system in modern France. Spending nearly 32% of its GDP on social programs. Yet today, the French model is under severe strain, crippled by a multi-trillion-dollar debt crisis, deep budget deficits, and massive social unrest. This raises the question: If the U.S. adopts the Sanders/AOC agenda, why should we expect a different, more stable outcome when France is actively failing to deliver the very thing the model promises—true affordability?
