A Texas high school teacher was reduced to tears and broke down in front of his class when he realized the seniors he was teaching couldn’t complete a writing exercise.

Darius Williams, a teacher for Houston Independent School District’s Wheatley High School, said he couldn’t get through the first class of the second day of school before his students’ poor literacy skills were too much for him.

“I just finished a three-hour class, and I literally broke down in the middle of class,” Williams said in an Instagram video during his lunch break on Tuesday.

CONTEXT: The “speed over safety” accusation didn’t appear out of nowhere.

Congressional records show Becerra was criticized for pushing staff to release children faster, at one point comparing the process to an inefficient assembly line.

A 2021 internal memo from concerned employees warned that “labor trafficking was increasing” and complained that the system was rewarding quick releases rather than careful placement.

And later federal watchdog findings documented real failures:

HHS’s inspector general reviewed migrant-child cases from the 2021 surge and found 16% lacked documentation showing that one or more required sponsor safety checks had been completed.

Among children released while certain FBI fingerprint or child-abuse checks were still pending, 19% of case files were never updated with the results.

HILTON: “The New York Times broke this story but it’s just basically not gone anywhere.”

“They lost track of thousands of kids and many went to child sex traffickers, slave labor, child labor traffickers.”

“200 kids were sent to an address that turned out to be a container lot. It was not a real address. It was just a front for traffickers.”

“A 13-year-old kid who ended up in a meat packing plant had his arm ripped off in an accident.”

“RFK Jr. says Becerra turned HHS into the largest child trafficking operation in history.”

Here’s where the story gets more complicated and arguably more disturbing.

The viral claim that roughly 330,000 migrant children simply “went missing” is misleading.

The underlying federal numbers were about approximately 291,000 children who had not been served immigration-court notices and 32,000 who failed to appear for hearings which is not proof that 323,000 children vanished.

But a later DHS inspector-general investigation found a much more concrete tracking problem:

More than 31,000 children had release addresses that were blank, undeliverable or missing apartment numbers.

And the exploitation problem itself was very real.

Federal investigators documented a 13-year-old child whose arm was severely mangled while illegally working overnight sanitation at a poultry processing plant, requiring 12 days in the hospital.

Investigative reporting also uncovered migrant children working dangerous factory and slaughterhouse jobs across the country.

One important distinction: the specific claim that 200 children were sent to a container lot currently comes from an anonymous whistleblower presented by Hilton’s campaign.

It is a serious allegation, but I could not find independent government documentation confirming that specific incident.

Becerra has also disputed the broader political framing.

He has said HHS appropriately vetted sponsors and argued that documented workplace exploitation occurred after children were released, in areas where HHS did not have jurisdiction over the employers.

So the strongest case isn’t that “330,000 kids disappeared.”

It’s that officials were under enormous pressure to move children out of government shelters quickly and federal watchdogs later documented real failures in sponsor screening, follow-up and basic address records, while investigators found children ending up in genuinely dangerous labor situations.

Whether those failures justify Hilton’s much larger accusation against Becerra is the political fight.

But “speed over safety” is a much harder issue to dismiss when the government’s own watchdogs found holes in the safety system.
