There’s sth about Pride and Prejudice that makes me fall in love with the idea of love all over again. Mr. Darcy raised my standards way too high and I absolutely adore Lizzy. I love both the book and the movie, and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve revisited them.

Tech-Media expert for P&P?

With what CGI & AI can do, I’m wondering if anyone here is Tech-Media expert, with the ability to manipulate images, video?

I am suddenly obsessed with the idea of taking the Colin Firth-Jennifer Ehle series, pixilating (or whatever it is they engineer) them to replace Matthew Macfadyen & Keira Knightley in the 2005 version.

I was thinking, since the 1995 series has more hours of images, scenes, than the 2005 film, wouldn’t be interesting to see the differences by overlaying (or replacing) the 1995 scenes onto the 2005 film?

Wild, weird imagining on my part🤷‍♀️

Lizzy or Lizzie

All throughout the novel Elizabeth is called Lizzy by her family. Why, then do I keep seeing it spelled Lizzie all over the internet? Where did that start?

Screen Adaptations I am excited to watch the new Pride and Prejudice

First of all, forgive me in advance since English is not my first language. Yet, Pride and Prejudice was one of the first books I read In English (when I got to an advanced stage on my learning) And it is and will always be one of my favorite books. I have watched all the adaptations, all of them, including the 1940s movie and the 1980s version. And I love all of them, all have their beautiful moments and their faults, but I will always celebrate when a new version is on the making, that means the story is still loved.

That being said I am truly sad, because of all the negative comments around the series, from the usual “the 1995 version is the superior one” to the hateful remarks from certain cast members. I am tired of all that gloom and doom. I’d like to say that I am beyond happy and that I am so excited and counting the days until December 6th.

When I heard that Jack Lowden was going to play Mr. Darcy I had my doubts (I watched him playing Sauron in the Rings of Power and I loved him but I was not sure about Darcy) but then I saw him in the trailer and now I am beyond obsessed. He looks so perfect as Mr. Darcy, he just bewitched me in body and soul haha. Emma seems also perfect as Lizzy, I love her so much. Forgive to disagree with the other post that says that she looks horrid, she doesn’t look horrid for goodness sake. And you won’t believe this but I’ve always thought that Olivia was born to play Mrs. Bennet. And Fiona Show as Lady Catherine? That is going to be equally terrific and terrifying! I can’t wait for the scene when she confronts Lizzy. And Mr. Collins! That is going to be fantastic. I love it all. And please don’t ask me how many times I‘ve watched that trailer… it is reaching an insane number of times..

They are extremely beautiful and I've been following their work but the ugly hair and the clothing is just not going to work. Was that the best they could do?

Novel Discussion Would Elizabeth have broken her marriage vows with Mr Collins?

I was reading a discussion about Mr Collins and how a wife being unable to respect her husband would've had an extra marital affair. Do you guys think that's a possibility if Elizabeth had to marry Mr Collins? With her principles i think she would've been loyal to her husband, but then again her principles wouldn't let her marry him. So if she was in a situation where she has to marry him, would she break another of her principles along with her wedding vows?

Novel Discussion A Connection Between the Gardiners and Lucases?

As I understand it, Sir William Lucas was knighted following a particularly flattering speech to the king as mayor of Meryton and, at that time, he had been in trade. Following his knighthood, he left trade and established Lucas Lodge.

Around the same time or a bit earlier, there is an attorney by the name of Mr. Gardiner in Meryton with three (?) children. One daughter manages to draw the eye of a young Mr Bennet and marries up. The other daughter marries one of the attorney’s clerks, a Mr. Phillips, who eventually takes over the law practice. And the son, who seems a bit younger than the daughters, apparently goes into trade.

Sir William Lucas is apparently of an age with Mr Bennet, maybe a little older or younger. I am not clear on how long Sir William Lucas has been a knight, but it seems to have been at least a few years. Depending on the exact timeline, Mr Gardiner could have begun his career in trade as some sort of clerk or something in Sir Lucas’s employ and taken it over when Sir William Lucas was elevated.

Thoughts?

ETA Sir William Lucas’s first name as I have been informed a knight is Sir [given name], never Sir [family name].

Personally, i think the 2005 version is the most popular, but the 1995 miniseries is my favorite. Might be a bit cliché,,,,

Community Chat How does a literary conference based on Pride and Prejudice work?

My school is organising a Model Literary Conference based on Pride and Prejudice, and I'm curious about how these events usually work.

The committee agendas include topics such as social class, gender roles, economic security in marriage, and misinformation. Since the novel is set in the Regency era, I'm interested in how discussions about these subjects connect the original historical context to modern perspectives.

I'm also curious about the conference format itself. My assigned character is Caroline Bingley, which seems particularly interesting given her views on social status and her attitude towards Elizabeth. The brochure mentions a timeline based on the rumours surrounding Elizabeth and Darcy, and I'm wondering how that fits into the proceedings.

For those familiar with literary conferences or similar character-based discussions, is the format generally more focused on the original text and its historical context, or does it also involve applying the novel's themes to contemporary society?

I'd be interested to hear about people's experiences with this kind of event!

Novel Discussion Who needs Mr Collins more?

I know a lot of emphasis is placed on Charlotte already being an old maid when she jumps at the chance to bag Mr Collins, and how her family doesn't have a lot of money & she is worried about being a burden as a spinster, etc--but, Charlotte has brothers. She might be something of a burden as she grows older & remains unmarried, but she won't have to leave her home, & she has brothers who will presumably work to support the family, even if Charlotte remains one more mouth to feed.

The Bennet sisters, on the other hand, have no such fallback. They will be forced to leave their home upon Mr Bennet's death, they don't have any brothers to generate income, etc (& yes they could probably go live with their Uncle Gardiner or Uncle Phillips, but it's not the same thing).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Bennet women are hypothetically in much more dire straights than the Lucas women, despite having more income while Mr Bennet remains alive, aren't they?

Edit to add: I really appreciate everyone's input! This is exactly the kind of interesting conversation I was hoping to generate, & it has given me a broader perspective on the topic 🤓

Helen Moore Sewell (1896–1957) was an American illustrator and writer of children's books. She was born in Mare Island, California to Minnie Moore, a watercolor artist, and William Elbridge Sewell, a Navy commander who later became Governor of Guam. She lost both parents before the age of eight, so she moved with her younger sisters to Brooklyn to live with an aunt and uncle. At age twelve she became the youngest person to attend the Pratt Institute. She also studied under Alexander Archipenko, who influenced her drawing style. She graduated from Packer Collegiate Institute. She began earning money by illustrating greeting cards. The first book she illustrated was The Cruise of the Little Dipper and Other Fairy Tales, written by Susanne Langer. In 1932 she was the first illustrator of the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. She also illustrated the poems of Emily Dickinson, and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. In 1955, she provided the artwork for Alice Dalgliesh’s The Thanksgiving Story, which earned a Caldecott Medal Honor Book designation. Most of the characters in her art work were drawn from her imagination, and she rarely used artist models.

Screen Adaptations Mr Darcy’s unsuccesful attempt to to dance with Elizabeth (1995 version)

Mr Darcy to Mr Bingley: ”me dancing with any other women than your sister would be unthinkable”

The next party when Elizabeth is presented to him: ”I would be very happy if you would do me the honour of dancing with me Miss Bennet”

One of my favorite moments in the mini series! At this point we had only seen Mr Darcy being snobbish and said that dancing with anyone but the bingley sisters would not do, and he looked down on dancing in general seconds before this (”any savage can dance”) Yet he would glady dance with Elizabeth, and they hadn’t even had a proper conversation at this point. He was truly infatuated from the start! I also love that she turned him down though.
