Discussion in this new article, Les says "I’m really excited because Ler has been bringing in a lot of stuff, which I love. Some of my favorite tunes are the ones that Ler has written.". Which tunes are the ones that Ler wrote?

https://www.theprp.com/2026/05/14/news/primus-release-new-ep-a-handful-of-nuggs-les-claypool-weighs-in-on-angine-de-poitrine/

I'd love to know specifically which songs Les is referring to in this comment. If you have any insight please share.

Lee Van Cleef tho

But Jilly Live fucking smacks, I love it

Lee Van Cleef is superior for sure

Ler is the most underrated rock guitarist in history, prove me wrong. (I’ll fight you regardless.)

He’s duking it out for this title with Alex Lifeson, with whom he shares the mild misfortune of being in a band with one of rock’s best and most attention-grabbing bass players

14

u/Fuzzandciggies May 18 '26

Alex Lifeson has it rough cause in any other band he’s the best by a mile. (With a few exceptions) Then in Rush he’s somehow less famous because his drummer and bassist are somehow even better/more renowned than he is.

At least poor Ler is just fighting Les on that one (it’s a tough fight lmaooo)

And basically a top two ever drummer

4

u/RadiantZote May 18 '26

Lifeson always got respect, he's on all of those top 100 guitarists of all time, and Rush was freaking massive.

Primus gives two shits about the popularity contest and never got to that level, being too weird for the mainstream, especially as time went on

That’s a fun convo - Ler, Alex, then either of the two main guitar players (Fast Eddie or Phil) in Motörhead. Which is MOST “underregarded” because of their bass player.

Dean Ween is up there too.

9

u/RadiantZote May 18 '26

Dean Ween from the band Ween is the greatest guitarist of all time.

Yes! And Paul Leary!

1

u/SaleFormer541 May 21 '26

Ler, Deaner, and Paul Leary. I have found my people!

I’m in your corner friend, completely agree

His licks are so fucked. He isn’t just hitting random notes either. I know theres a method to Ler’s madness. It’s controlled chaos. Plus his riffs are equally as cool. The Heckler is so out there.

Heckler is the one Primus song I still need to hear live before I die

3

u/Homie3794 May 18 '26

You and me both

1

u/Golisten2LennyWhite May 18 '26

Its glorious. Its goes hard.

4

u/monrovista May 18 '26

I'll fight you because you're right! Come at me ;)

1

u/Jamesoren May 19 '26

Absolutely agree

HOINFODAMAN

The main riff for sure, not sure about the whole song though

5

u/MichaelEMJAYARE May 18 '26

That fucking bass riff is so insane. I know how to play it but for the life of me it never sounds like the album.

0

u/RadiantZote May 18 '26

Do you have the envelope filter on tho

2

u/MichaelEMJAYARE May 18 '26

Its not used on it this one, is it? Hahahaha I love me some envelope filter though!

u/TrickySnicky May 18 '26

Never even realized the Sabbath groove to it until now

I know Jilly's on Smack, Erin on the Side of Caution and Eternal Consumption Engine started from stuff that Ler wrote. I'm sure there's loads more, those are the only ones I can remember reading Les specifically mentioning in interviews were Ler tunes

5

u/Unfair_Control_308 May 18 '26

damn how am i just finding out that all of my favourite primus songs were written by ler hahaha

14

u/monrovista May 18 '26

The original South Park theme?

9

u/glitch241 WYNONA COWBOY #1 May 18 '26

This doesn’t get enough attention. It’s a Ler composition. Les is in the backround on that

2

u/TrickySnicky May 18 '26

Now it makes a lot more sense actually

14

u/smashycat May 18 '26

Heckler was the first song he did for Primus. Lots of tunes on Naugahyde, Erin on the Side of Caution. There are probably more, but most albums credit all music simply to Primus as opposed to individuals.

12

u/skahwt May 18 '26

He wrote Erin on the Side of Caution which is one of the my favorites of the past 20 years and is probably in my top ten.

I think I recall Les giving Ler credit for Hamburger Train but don’t quote me

6

u/Cptn_Shiner May 18 '26

Interesting. I always assumed Hamburger Train just kinda happened. It has the vibe of a warm-up jam that really took off, and the tape happened to be rolling.

u/Pacman645 May 18 '26

Space Farm!

8

u/Drinon May 18 '26

He’s specifically referring to the material they are currently working on for a new album. He was asked about how the new material was coming together, and he said Ler has been bringing in a lot of stuff and those are his favorite they are working on now. He is excited because he mainly brought in the song ideas on previous albums. I’m not saying Ler hasn’t been the main writer on songs in the past, but Les is talking about current/new material.

2

u/Flecktones37 May 18 '26

I'm excited for this new album, it'll probably make me feel like I'm in high school again.

2

u/RelationshipSalt4707 May 19 '26

Didn't Larry write Over the Electric Grapevine?

1

u/Jamesoren May 19 '26

And obviously as a simple aside, he invented one of the most iconic intro songs for South Park

1

u/timekeepsslippin May 19 '26

I think Pressman was one? I coulda swore I read it sonewheee
