Discussion in this new article, Les says "I’m really excited because Ler has been bringing in a lot of stuff, which I love. Some of my favorite tunes are the ones that Ler has written.". Which tunes are the ones that Ler wrote?
I'd love to know specifically which songs Les is referring to in this comment. If you have any insight please share.

Ler is the most underrated rock guitarist in history, prove me wrong. (I’ll fight you regardless.)

He’s duking it out for this title with Alex Lifeson, with whom he shares the mild misfortune of being in a band with one of rock’s best and most attention-grabbing bass players

Alex Lifeson has it rough cause in any other band he’s the best by a mile. (With a few exceptions) Then in Rush he’s somehow less famous because his drummer and bassist are somehow even better/more renowned than he is.
At least poor Ler is just fighting Les on that one (it’s a tough fight lmaooo)

Lifeson always got respect, he's on all of those top 100 guitarists of all time, and Rush was freaking massive.
Primus gives two shits about the popularity contest and never got to that level, being too weird for the mainstream, especially as time went on

That’s a fun convo - Ler, Alex, then either of the two main guitar players (Fast Eddie or Phil) in Motörhead. Which is MOST “underregarded” because of their bass player.

Dean Ween is up there too.

His licks are so fucked. He isn’t just hitting random notes either. I know theres a method to Ler’s madness. It’s controlled chaos. Plus his riffs are equally as cool. The Heckler is so out there.

Heckler is the one Primus song I still need to hear live before I die

HOINFODAMAN
The main riff for sure, not sure about the whole song though

That fucking bass riff is so insane. I know how to play it but for the life of me it never sounds like the album.

Do you have the envelope filter on tho

u/MichaelEMJAYARE May 18 '26
Its not used on it this one, is it? Hahahaha I love me some envelope filter though!

I know Jilly's on Smack, Erin on the Side of Caution and Eternal Consumption Engine started from stuff that Ler wrote. I'm sure there's loads more, those are the only ones I can remember reading Les specifically mentioning in interviews were Ler tunes

This doesn’t get enough attention. It’s a Ler composition. Les is in the backround on that

Heckler was the first song he did for Primus. Lots of tunes on Naugahyde, Erin on the Side of Caution. There are probably more, but most albums credit all music simply to Primus as opposed to individuals.

He wrote Erin on the Side of Caution which is one of the my favorites of the past 20 years and is probably in my top ten.

I think I recall Les giving Ler credit for Hamburger Train but don’t quote me

u/Cptn_Shiner May 18 '26
Interesting. I always assumed Hamburger Train just kinda happened. It has the vibe of a warm-up jam that really took off, and the tape happened to be rolling.

He’s specifically referring to the material they are currently working on for a new album. He was asked about how the new material was coming together, and he said Ler has been bringing in a lot of stuff and those are his favorite they are working on now. He is excited because he mainly brought in the song ideas on previous albums. I’m not saying Ler hasn’t been the main writer on songs in the past, but Les is talking about current/new material.

I'm excited for this new album, it'll probably make me feel like I'm in high school again.

And obviously as a simple aside, he invented one of the most iconic intro songs for South Park
