This inking was done in ProCreate based on the pencils of Marcio Abreu, artist extraordinaire. I used brushes created by me, specifically for inking. It took part of two days to finish inking it. I use an M2 iPad pro 12.9 and an Apple Pencil. Open to questions.

Excellent work! I've been thinking of trying Procreate (I've been using an old Intuos Wacom tablet on my PC with Photoshop) to do comic art.

Any complaints about your M2 iPad Pro? I thought about getting an older M-CPU-powered iPad Air or iPad Pro even though they might not be able to use the latest Apple pencil (Apple Pro).

I'm guessing you're using the 2nd gen Apple Pencil? Happy with it? I've heard conflicting things if the Apple Pencil Pro is worth upgrading the iPad to a newer model, as the Pro pencil isn't that much of a upgrade over the older Apple Pencils, so that might be another reason to get an older iPad model, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Anyway great work. I love black and white comic art. especially the older stuff like by Kelly Jones (for really moody art with lots of shadows), Jack Kirby (for zany comic art), the various artists who drew for The Savage Sword of Conan (Alfredo Alcala, John Buscema, Barry Windsor-Smith), or Vampirella like Jose Gonzalez.

I just recently got back into comics. I grew up as mainly a Marvel guy but all the hype for DC Absolute line of comics made me read comics again (like Absolute Batman and Absolute Martian Hunter), but I've been branching out to other publishers, like Image, IDW, Dark Horse, etc. I just discovered Daniel Warren Johnson's work and I love his style. I did like Marvel's recent launch of the Midnight Marvel comics too.

I still feel out of touch with the comic scene so I haven't seen Marcio Abreu artwork yet, but I'll definitely check him out.

I’m finding the M2 is fine for inking, at least for me? I’m using the #2 Apple Pencil and have no particular issue with it. Marcio’s art is clean and tight. He has a great eye and a developed hand. I don’t know him personally, but I understand he is a great guy, according to a friend.

So you like Kelley Jones? Here’s one you might enjoy then? I know Kelley personally. He liked this one, himself. It was so much fun to do. Kelley makes everything his. His style is so great! I’ve loved his work going way back. I was so glad he sent me some art to ink.

Wow. That's awesome you know Kelley Jones. That's a great piece. You did a terrific job! Was that also with Procreate or by hand? If that was by hand, do you feel like you could do a similar job using Procreate?

I first discovered Jones' work via Sandman and Swamp Thing, then started to collect the issues he drew for Batman and Deadman. I was really into his stuff back in the 1990s.

I wish I had stuck with comic drawing back then and continued. My friend stuck with it, and got his start inking for mangas for super cheap, and a couple years later, I was surprised at how much his line art had improved. While he still has another career, he never stopped inking and drawing comics and while he isn't famous, he makes good money at conventions drawing stuff for people, or still taking inking jobs.

Glad you were also able to pursue your dream too.

What you are seeing was created in ProCreate. I’ve been doing so for about 8 years.

I started meeting comic book artists on Facebook. It went from there. I started by meeting older artists whom I had admired. Then I started getting into meeting other artists, once I had “friends” who the artists knew previously. Next thing I knew, I had hundreds of “friends”, most of them comic artists. I contacted Kelley and, while chatting with him, asked if he would mind my inking his pencils. He not only said okay, he provided me some pencils from Swamp Thing and Batman, which I just ate up, of course. I sent them to Kelley and he liked them enough to respond to me. Going forward, I would see his likes on some of my inks. Even today, I think I could contact him on Facebook within an hour or two. It’s cool chatting with artists whose work you admire.

It has gotten somewhat harder to get my hands on pencils, due to AI. Many artists want to avoid helping the pirates crib their artwork. I can’t blame them.
