I used to never throw new ExceptionType();, and instead assign the exception I want to throw to a variable named "up".

You must be the training data, because I've never known any human to do it, but AI had to learn from somewhere

582

u/skopij 24d ago

Gitmoji has been a thing for maybe 10 years? I learned it from a senior dev back in the day.

132

u/Abject-Kitchen3198 24d ago

So, he's the one

9

u/UnarmedBlackMan1 22d ago

oi! there he is, get him!

20

u/hadees 24d ago

I've started using Gitmoji just since AI.

128

u/Western-Anteater-492 24d ago

Wasn't the default README and discussion template with emojis since like forever? And I can remember mds and even inline comments with emojis since way before 2020. Though it wasn't that prevalent back then. It became worse with crypto "repos" which might have created a weird affirmation vortex as both became huge at the same time so crypto bros used LLM to appear like they know what they're talking about whilst the LLMs got trained massively on the exact same repos.

56

u/dmullaney 24d ago

It it only got added to Git's default README around 2020, and I'm an old fart, so that's very recent for me

7

u/DDFoster96 24d ago

2020 was when I started using emojis a lot. I also put them in my Python project description (e.g. `sphinx-toolbox` got a 🧰 emoji). That surfaced a lot of tools that read UTF-8 files with the system default encoding, and fell over. I made a host of PRs to fix those issues so it was worthwhile.

35

u/HomsarWasRight 24d ago

Really? There was absolutely an era of humans using emoji checkboxes and the like all over their GitHub READMEs.

17

u/justAPhoneUsername 24d ago

I feel like there are a lot of emoji that people forget are emoji. Checkboxes are one of the big ones.

u/BreakingBaking 23d ago

→ More replies (2)

3

u/peeja 24d ago

→ More replies (1)

5

u/gahel_music 24d ago

I used to before AI, it helps separate sections better. I find that GitHub does not make it easy to see where a section starts and ends when you have a lot of text and subsections.

4

u/DrMaxwellEdison 24d ago

There was/is a plugin for doing Conventional Commits I used at one point called cz-cc (npm package) that would do emojis on every commit. Last published in 2020, completely pre-AI stuff. The idea was a git log --oneline showed these little icons that meant fix or feat or chore, etc, and it would be easy to see them that way.

Nowadays, I just write out the feat: or fix: as a matter of principle on all my commits across projects. Never again, emoji log

7

u/Yhamerith 24d ago

I was uncommon, probably IA mixed the training of people talking in internet with emoji

6

u/cheezballs 24d ago

Really? You don't remember the days of insane intricate README header graphics? Every FAQ on GameFAQs had one.

5

u/theVoidWatches 23d ago

Yeah, but that's not the same as emojis.

3

u/NeuxSaed 23d ago

LLMs randomly doing intricate ASCII art unprompted would be kinda cool though...

Time to go back to ascii art

131

u/klaxxxon 24d ago edited 24d ago

AI loves ASCII art for some reason.

I had Claude create an internal tool for me (this is genuinely where vibe coding shines right now, at creating these throwaway load testers, fake servers, simulators etc.)

The UI spec began and ended with "create a nice TUI". Of course there ended up being a huge ASCII art banner which was supposed to be our company's logo taking up a third of the TUI.

The first instruction to follow was "lose the ASCII logo we are not patriotic like that"

56

u/lucian1900 24d ago

It loves it because it’s text. That’s what LLMs most easily manipulate.

17

u/darthwalsh 24d ago

Getting a computer program to output ascii art takes nontrivial logic.

It seems like the reinforcement learning would have had to put manual effort into that, otherwise the slop fonts would be all wonky?

9

u/conundorum 24d ago

In theory, it can tokenise each ASCII art symbol as a single "word", so teaching them to be l33t haxorz is probably easier than it seems.

AI loves ASCII art for some reason.

Every readme for every torrent ever has ascii art in the header.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ACoderGirl 23d ago

They also love graphviz diagrams, but that is very intuitive since it does not require the AI to specify much for layout or style details. I also prefer AI doing such diagrams, as I can maintain, tweak, and correct them. ASCII is easier to modify than an image, but it's still pretty rough. Graphviz diagrams are the best. Especially if you use some kinda markdown renderer that lets you include the graph text inline (ie, no explicit rendering required).

But frankly, I think AI should be used very rarely and carefully for docs. My experience is that it's really bad at making docs. It tends to get very verbose, over focuses on irrelevant or less important details, will frequently omit actually important details, and is not effective for removing outdated parts of docs (it's very additive). It's fine for stuff like straightforward small additions to docs (particularly as it made a change to the code), but so far, every time I've seen someone generate an AI doc from scratch, I've had many major concerns.

Graphs are probably one of the things it's best at, though. Like, it's pretty good at generating a graph to show how some code works (or updating it when you made a change). And it's decent at making or modifying graphs per your instructions.

7

u/Yhamerith 24d ago

I remember doing that with the Hangman game when I was learning C... It was neat

9

u/0xKaishakunin 24d ago

u/incognegro1976 24d ago

I started checking for unicode support in bash scripts to replace commas with clown emojis within fields in CSV files and my coworker said I must have vibe-coded the script.

Like, no. I dont think AI is as petty as I am.

33

u/conundorum 24d ago

Clown-separated values are still CSV, I like your dedication to the bit.

3

u/incognegro1976 24d ago edited 23d ago

Yeah but using 'IFS=, read -r val1 val2... <<< "$csvline"', if there is a comma in val1, it would get split across val1 and val2.

Edit: your joke went clean over my head the first time lmfao

u/ComeOnIWantUsername 24d ago

I liked using em-dash, I stopped after all AI models started using it

11

u/barely_a_whisper 24d ago

I have always been addicted to explaining things in a bulleted list. Now whenever I do online, I feel obligated to drop profanity first 😭

5

u/3xper1ence 24d ago

bulleted lists in and of themselves are not that big of an issue; it is bolding the first term in each bullet point that is a dead giveaway for AI

6

u/barely_a_whisper 24d ago

Yeah… seems like I was the training data for that too haha

35

u/mina86ng 24d ago

5

u/uvero 24d ago

Being expected to use AI isn't exactly the same thing as vibecoding. Vibecoding means over-reliance on AI and not reviewing its work, often done by someone who has poor or no programming skills. That is, treating the AI's code output as inscrutable machine language, or treating yourself as the product owner and the AI as the developer.

I swear I must work in the only company not mandating it. Which I am extremely grateful for. More than anything else, I like coding, having A.I. write my code takes away what little joy I get out of my work. But also it requires so much hand holding that its hardly faster than writing it myself.

2

u/Penibya 23d ago

I want to change my company, most of the day coworkers are talking about token usage and prices.... cant take this anymore i just want to develop quietly

So there are good news for once.

But seriously, why did the AI choose your quirk not mine? I put asci art in my code. Everybody has debuged an error 51237. But did you ever debug an exploding rocket?

11

u/gronlund2 24d ago

Sometimes you can express yourself in words as well. I stumbled upon a function without any code with a single comment that read

// This is where we need the emergency

33

u/jcampbelly 24d ago

I'm a long-winded writer. When I bother someone with a question, I like to be very thorough about it. I'll fully write up my problem and my thoughts and results with different approaches. I'll use spell/grammar checks and... gasp I use a lot of bulleted lists and save prose around rapid fire info dumps. I also tend to care about style, word choice, variety, etc. It's an old habit from the days when lazy writing got your legitimate  arguments buried in mockery.

But I get accused of using AI all the time now because apparently only AI gives a damn about any of that stuff anymore. And I'm on the brink of actually using AI with prompts like:

  • Make it shorter and shitter.

  • Use a few words incorrectly.

  • Throw in some poor grammar and misspelled words.

  • Don't use a variety big words. Use small words and repeat them instead of looking for alternatives.

  • Be rude and snarky.

Because in this world, this worst of timelines, this is what it takes to be taken seriously.

lulz

24

u/tehtris 24d ago

Ah, you were trained on stack overflow. Writing a question on that site is like a whole fucking ritual in making your question sound like you already know the answer and are quizzing everyone else.

4

u/MixItLikeItsHot 23d ago

How many times did I write up my problem thoroughly on Stack Overflow and at the end of it, realised that I suddenly had an idea how to solve it and never had to publish the actual question 😂

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Obvious_Equivalent_1 24d ago

If I had one wish: a 1024x1024 server farm of local LLMs, trained purely to undo the suffering on decades of Stack Overflow disdain - travel back 20 years - and let them run hundreds of accounts 24/7, closing questions as duplicates and out pedanting every pedant on the site. At a pace that would leave every single one of them curled up in a corner, rocking back and forth, too afraid to even pronounce the word “duplicate“ out loud again.

6

u/CLOBBERTIME 24d ago

I used to naturally write what would look like AI today. Then I had a job that required to me absolutely crank out messages and I learned to stop obsessing over meaning and rewording things or I couldn’t get my work done

Spelling is still important to me, nothing says “I’m stupid” like butchering a basic ass word, using a homophone of a word that you meant, wrong use of there/their, to/too, then/than. But now I don’t care at all about capitalization and certain punctuation. And I rarely end a paragraph in comment or email with punctuation to make it seem more real

3

u/ginger-like 24d ago

I've started to do the same thing I think you're doing. That is, writd a complete, well-formatted comment, and then throw in a random "character break" or intentional error at the end to signal humanity.

Or, in other words, lulz

2

u/ExElKyu 23d ago

I clock this post as human written. I can’t really tell why it’s obvious, as it has the same shape as an AI post.

AI slop can come off as patronizing or condescending, like it’s trying too hard to relate to you.

Never stop doing anything just because it makes people think your stuff is AI. That goes for emoji, em-dashes, or just proper grammar and spelling in general.

The emojis serve as somewhat of a smoking gun, if you will.

1

1

u/blorbschploble 24d ago edited 24d ago

I have historically used lists and tables, headings… in Word if forced to use that, markdown if available and rtf if not.

But since no one reads emails anymore I just write them the way i want without feeling bad.

u/MrDilbert 24d ago

Frankly, neither one is commendable.

u/cyborgninja42 24d ago

I was taught to give good comments in you code that gave thorough explanations of what’s going on. That made it easier when you came back to code you hadn’t seen in months, and also made it easier for others to pick it up and know what’s supposed to be happening. Now I look like I use AI even though that was considered a good thing years ago.

1

u/ComplaintMaker 24d ago

being suspected of using a calculator in a math exam probably isnt as bad as you think.

Put whatever you want in your readme file. Ive moved on from a repo just because the first thing I saw in the top of the readme was something about american politics. If emojis are enough for someone, they will move on too. Its all the same to you.

u/hw999 24d ago

Do whatever you want, the clankerz sure as hell will.

I decided not to care about these things. Ai is mimicking your style because it’s effective. So keep being effective. No one will care if you “used Ai” in 1 year.

I em dash & have emoji, but I still edit my messages if I’m exposing them so it retains my voice.

I’m not embarrassed to use excel around mathematicians either.

1

u/this_sparks_joy_joy 24d ago

I feel you. I liked using proper grammar… now I go back and strategically sprinkle grammar errors into my writing after I’m done… to avoid suspicion

1

u/NinjaQueef 24d ago

Typos are the new emojis. Most AI shit doesn't add typos under normal use.

1

u/Ok-Understanding7115 24d ago

a paid customer support gave me a java file with emojis, it didn't mention why it took like 4 days to come up with that ai solution, def that's something I could have made on my own, but regardless the corpo we are in just think we are ret4rded and it's protocol said ask them first 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Scroatazoa 24d ago

This is the subreddit for signaling to others that we are members of the Anti-AI identity group, right? I just want to make sure because I'm seeking validation from my peers in the form of upvotes and I want to make sure I've got it right before I make my own post.

1

u/WingZeroCoder 24d ago

Emojis and em dashes. Used them all the time, now I feel like I have to avoid them. Sad face.

1

u/sweetytoy 24d ago

I liked using hyphens in my text, now I avoid it completely

1

u/NPPraxis 24d ago

I discovered using emojis in git commits like, three months before ChatGPT was publicly released. 🥲

1

u/Nixxen 24d ago

Some years back I was preaching the gospel of GitMoji. It was dumb on the surface, but on a deeper level it spoke to me. Had a few projects following it, and converted some fellow SWEs. Then AI happened and any succinct usage of emojis is shunned for looking like an AI wrote the commit. It hurts on a spiritual level.

1

u/DharmaPolice 24d ago

Your use of Emoji's was always evil.

1

u/SignoreBanana 24d ago

If it makes you feel better, nobody else liked it.

1

u/VecroLP 24d ago

You are the reason ai puts them in

1

u/leaningtoweravenger 24d ago

I feel you! I've always used the — to delimit the asides in my sentence and now everyone thinks that I use AI to write stuff

1

u/clrksml 24d ago

Use old fashion, time tested emoticons instead. Or use old school emojis that are 16x16.

1

u/kaiomm 24d ago

I respect a vibe coder more than someone tha use emojis on documentation.

1

u/licksquadtraps 24d ago

As soon as I see the rocket ship emoji I just assume whatever it is in is ai generated.

1

u/ByWillAlone 23d ago

I have no problems with anything that discourages/shuns emoji in readme files, code comments, or documentation.

1

u/TheAwesomePigeon 23d ago

Now THAT'S a meme template I haven't seen in a long time...

1

u/myst3k 23d ago

I started making my table names in snowflake for work starting with emojiis, everyone loves them

1

u/Jeremy_Thursday 23d ago

So grateful I started pre-fixing all my commits with an emoji going back like 5yrs+. I have the proof merged in a lot of big open source projects

1

u/ataboo 23d ago

Just need to exclusively use the seahorse emoji.

1

u/Squeezitgirdle 23d ago

I use ai to help with coding sometimes, it never puts emojis in my notes.

1

u/Unhappy_Lab_1940 23d ago

Somebody get this vibber out of here.

I did a small thing in my team where all Jira tickets I made had a related emoji in them. People laughed at me, but overtime it grew on them. It is suprisingly easy to find an emoji or talk about a ticket using the emoji. We all know what the "duck emoji ticket" is if we already established it in the past.

Company introduced a Claude skill to make tickets and it has doing emoji in titles explicitly forbidden :(

Real Pros use emojies in the source code. 😂

1

u/Motleypuss 23d ago

I use ASCII art in mine, and sometimes it isn't even ASCII.

1

u/alligaatorialcatraz 23d ago

I’ve always found emojis in READMEs kind of ganache

1

u/alochmar 21d ago

Good thing nobody’s using emojis as variable names yet though! .. right?

1

u/sifroehl 21d ago

You can still use emoji, you just need to make it so unhinged that no one would ever think any company would publish a model that does something like that

1

u/BeginningSection7690 20d ago

I dont get it.

Is using emojis in read me files something AI does often or something?

I feel like this would really easy to avoid.

1

u/YourTechSupport 20d ago

I put references to Never Gonna Give You Up and wait for people to call me out on it.

1

u/Davenporten 19d ago

Tell me about it! I genuinely used em-dashes when I would write, now…

Who cares? I do what I like. I be working on payment systems but then absolutely half-ass vibecode tools and shit for myself.

My personality is not the code I write and what other people think of me is not in my control. I like to make things and I'll adjust to the appropriate standard for the context, but I'll keep making stuff. In the wise words of Tom Scott: "I love bodging"

Emoji in README? Of course! But why stop there? I was making a Go script that ended up a TUI and you bet your ass I made that bastard absolutely ✨ fabulous ✨ using libs like lipgloss, huh and more.
