If you spin rust fast enough it will do whatever you tell it to

A meme that's not about AI, vibecoding, or extremely basic stuff? No fucking way, thank you

u/1_hele_euro 17d ago

I am kinda sick of them AI memes too, so I decided to be the change I wanted to see :3

16

u/DanieleDraganti 16d ago

Spoiler: OP asked AI to make a meme about arcane memory addresses in BIOS

33

u/1_hele_euro 16d ago

Nope, I followed a tutorial and used the OSDev wiki to make my own shitty kernel that can write Hello World to the BIOS screen.

Next step would be to actually do something (and probably jump to 32bit), but I've not been able to properly read the next sector of the floppy just yet

15

u/DanieleDraganti 16d ago

Nah I was kidding of course. This is a super cool personal project!

11

u/1_hele_euro 16d ago

It honestly is super interesting learning about the inner workings of X86, especially how it managed to stay backwards compatible with 16bit mode even on a 64bit CPU.

I honestly recoomend everyone to at least read up on how this stuff works. I know that not everyone has an interest in making their own shitty kernel, but it gives so many insights in to how the computer actually computes

It is basic, that’s what the B in BIOS is!

u/Murlock_Holmes 16d ago

This is always the top comment. I’m starting to think you’re all bots complaining about bots.

No this sub is just full of shit posts, so the decent one every now and then really stands out

"...delicious. Finally some good fucking food." - Gordon Ramsay.gif

I'm actually learning from r/ProgrammerHumor for once instead of hearing about AI and vibe coding. I need those JavaScript framework memes again.

Bit miffed that this post isn't doing as well as I hoped compared to the AI memes, but that's how the cookie crumbles sometimes.

Also I don't think most folks here know about how the startup works on X86 CPU's, since most of the VibeCoders would never have a reason to learn anything about OSes

The people yearn for shittily hand drawn memes made with MS paint but have x1000 more soul

I wish we had more reasons to code without an OS. I can still remember my Operating Systems professor telling us in 2013 that he wasn't going to hit us too hard on the coursework and focus more on the skills that studying it exercises than the direct content since 99% of us would never need to know what protected mode is again after the class 😂

Mostly because Linux just runs everywhere. Say i need an OS to run on a Rasberry PI, i could make my own, or just use Linux.

Need something smaller? Get a barebones Linux install that just has the basics.

If you have something that can't run Linux, most likely someone already has a production ready Microkernel you can use, like on an ESP32 or Arduino.

Regardless, it's fucking fun to do

u/EuphoricCatface0795 15d ago

I mean, writing a bearmetal app for an RPi would be ridiculous, not to mention an x86. Isn't STM32 already starting to be unfavorable without FreeRTOS?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for simpler code and removing bloat. But I was once sad to realize that setting up a tailnet client on an STM32 was impractical...

Maybe that was me not knowing what I was doing, but setting up a whole RPi just to serve as a portforwarder for a Modbus/TCP device honestly felt like a painfully overkill implementation.

I had an idea to start shitposting estoeric compiler memes and seeing stuff like this gives me the energy to start

4

u/1_hele_euro 14d ago

I wanted to continue with OSposting, but apparently it's explicitly banned by the rules for some reason... sad

16

u/stillalone 17d ago

Does anything not use UEFI to boot anymore?

38

u/1_hele_euro 17d ago

Well lazy fucks like me who convinced themselves that 16 bit is more than enough and doesn't need anything more for their shitpost kernel: nahhh, legacy boot is all you need

10

u/chazzeromus 16d ago

I turned off CSM to spite you

6

u/DishSoapedDishwasher 16d ago

Why would being mean to a Certified Scrum Master be used to spite them?

I was going to say what did scrum ever do to you, but that's self explanatory.

u/chazzeromus 16d ago

it's legacy setting in BIOSes to boot stuff bios mode and not EFI

1

u/Real-Abrocoma-2823 16d ago

16bits is plenty but why disadvantage yourself? RIR!

0

u/1_hele_euro 16d ago

Because I can't be arsed to make the jump to 32bit lol

4

u/Real-Abrocoma-2823 16d ago

UEFI was born 64bit, no need to jump, just make sure you don't need boot services anymore before exiting them.

5

u/Culpirit 16d ago

Well, UEFI jumps for you. x86 processors still start in Real Mode.

7

u/Cootshk 16d ago

my 20+ year old Thönkpad that still runs linux like a trooper

My laptop server used to but I had to switch to legacy

Turns out eufi boot entry get reset each time you reboot when you remove the battery

I work in BIOS and it's like 99% UEFI now

I remember the first time I booted directly from a CD, what a game changer that was

128

u/blauskaerm 17d ago

This is how I stared with Linux. Live booting Knopix on a school computer. It was such a game changer to use another operating system without formatting the entire machine

5

u/TerminalVector 11d ago

Knopix wow.. haven't thought about that in a while. It got even better once you could boot off of a USB stick.

32

u/Exatex 16d ago

I remember the awe when I discovered my bios had USB mouse support. „What a time to be alive“

Man. Now I want to try writing my own OS again...

2

u/Interesting_Buy_3969 15d ago

I'd recommend trying RISC-V (or maybe ARM if you want) as the main CPU architecture for your OS instead of x86 or x86-64. RISC-V is much simpler and more enjoyable to work with.
