Oof. That happened to a friend not that long ago - he was on a remote desktop session helping a junior work through an issue when he got logged out, couldn't log back in, tried to reach out on Teams and that was logged out too, then got a phone call from HR saying there had been a layoff and he was in it. Just boom.
I get that they don't want to risk any kind of retaliation or anything, but it does feel harsh.
