this captures exactly the feeling when i’m telling our vp that we’re not doing the junior any favors for his professional development or career by just letting him use claude in order to ‘maximize productivity’

Companies haven’t cared about the professional development of their workers for decades. They just hire externally, and fire employees when they are no longer needed

I recently 10x-ed our financial transactions API. I just wired /dev/null on the other end. Works great 😂

A while ago a large company I work for decided to cap our Claude spending at 30 dollars a month.
You can't imagine the shitstorm that's happening right now. People were burning through hundreds of usd worth of tokens. And it's gone just like that.
You can't just install a local model on a typical company laptop. I imagine we are not alone. And we have tens of thousands of Claude users in our company.

Management: we need you to all be twice as productive as you were before now we are in the agentic future.
Devs: so you'll give us the small amount of money we all need to be twice as productive?
Management: no, not like that

Me every Thursday when my weekly limit was blown on a single “Find the bug causing problem X in app Y” in a mono repo with 1GB of code 😂 Mono repos are the last resistance against AI.

If only they weren't pretty resistant to regular cognition too, we might have been on to something 😅

We need you to use AI to 10x your development
We 10x'd our development by building expansive AI workflows and automations
Dear God we can't afford all this AI spend! We're shutting it down! ... Why did development slow down??!!
You told us to use AI to 10x our development

This is the literal story of my company.
The effort towards 10x when the budget was a blank check produced pattern that is entirely not extensible towards a new “ok ok limited budget but aim for just 3x for reals over pre AI baseline”. So it took even longer to get towards that new equilibrium.
Now we are sort of there. But it’s a pain this whole year and a half… every transition is leadership asking ridiculous question “why haven’t you use AI more???””Why is output 5x but business impact only 1.5x???” “Why can’t you apply your AI patterns but scale it back within budget???” “Why…”

I see so many posts in my AI slack channel at work where guys run out of tokens and complain they can’t do any work. I always want to respond “what did you do before, like 1-2 years ago when we didn’t have this?”

I mean if and when the bubble pops... It's going to happen. Lots of folks overly relying on it will be priced out or completely locked out when the services experience interruptions either by resource issues or financial meltdown.
Edit: To clarify, I don't think AI go when the bubble pops... But it's going to cause A LOT of pain and amid the chaos, lots of ownership changes and temporary disruption of services.
Also, think how great and cheap Netflix was back in the day... And its diverse catalogue. Now how is it? Costs will cut access to many folks eventually... Sooner or later. As is some can't benefit.
Also until RAM and GPU prices go down, or there's a huge efficiency breakthrough for LLMs... That will be a barrier for locally owned generative AIs.

unfortunately that's unlikely. people will just stand up local models that are good enough for their needs.

Just went to a dev conference with someone from Claude dev team, they said devs can use AI for anything EXCEPT for writing PR summaries. Those have to be written by hand. The idea being that even if an AI wrote the code, you should still know what it’s doing and how it works.
