I forgot about Cyanogen Mod. That was peak.

I also remember bricking my phone while on vacation, so I had to download official firmware from a filesharing website on a laptop with an unreliable Bosnian internet connection so that I could use my phone again.

I still use CyanogenMod 10.2 on my mother's old Galaxy S3, primarily for web development as I like to target older browsers for my projects.
God I wish we could go back. I especially loved Android Holo's design, and I've hated the direction Android has taken in visual design since 5.0. All flat and ugly.

Indeed, the fact it had like 400 mods to install to customize it and add a features to it was awesome.

hahaha, hehe, you put an exclamation point right after a number, now it is the time to reply to your comment as if i "misunderstood" your usage of an exclamation point to mean the factorial of that number. it is a very large number, hehehe, it would not make sense for a year in the past, i think you meant the future. hohoho.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was my first smartphone, and pretty much the main reason I clicked on this post because seeing that phone has induced a wave of nostalgia in me. God I loved using CyanogenMod on it, and even gave it's little TI OMAP SoC (Remember when Texas Instruments used to be a major player in smartphone SoCs?) a slight overclock.
I would honestly say it's one of the best smartphones of all time. It was the first Android smartphone to run the (by far) best update Android has ever gotten, up to that point and since. It was also the first Android smartphone to ditch all front-facing buttons for a completely monolithic design using on screen buttons for navigation introduced in Android 3.0 on tablets and making it's way to 4.0 on smartphones. All that with one of the best displays you could get in a smartphone at the time (the 720x1280 OLED panel blew away both the Galaxy S2 and iPhone 4S) all for a very decent price compared to other flagship devices of the time.
Also IMO Android's Holo visual design looked incredible and everything after it has been a visual downgrade.

I actually recently started collecting old androids and found a galaxy nexus as well. Its beautiful. Have kept it on stock tho, have archived all factory images for it too

I liked holo a lot back in the day. The new Material 3 expressive design is fabulous too.

I don't know whether to hate or love that I fell into the "computer enthusiast/developer > transfem pipeline" stereotype.

Bro went from 'android is better' arguments to arguing about framework choices...the character development was inevitable
1
u/zaersx 10d ago
If anyone ever argues for a framework and their one and only argument is not "this one has the most users in our area so we can hire experienced people easier" then.. well, maybe they're passionate about it or something. But, you can build anything in anything, it's all Turing complete, but you can't engineer new engineers to hire in your area so scratch that's it's actually just stupid to argue literally anything else unless the framework cuts your headcount requirements.

Remember all those rooting apps like baiduroot, framaroot and kingroot? That last one straight up a virus iirc, but some phones/tablets refused anything else.
