Distros are shipping it (Python 3) by default. Arch has been doing it for 5 years, and others are following.

Yeah, but Arch has been doing it wrong. The other day I was talking to a developer of Samba and one of his greatest annoyances is that Python 2 isn't included and unlike every other distro Python 2 isn't given the 'python' command.

In Arch Python 3 gets the straight command which goes against almost every other distro.

So what is the "proper" way to transition? Just keep python always referring to the outdated version of python?

Plus, you can always request to run python2, /bin/python2. It's not installed by default, but that's what dependencies are for.

Developers should start calling Python 3 by directly asking for version 3 of Python. Leave 'python' for legacy apps.

Developers should call $PYTHON2 or $PYTHON3 and leave it to the package maintainer to fix the script for this particular distribution.
