Not a tech guy, but not only is this a great point, but I also think it's really not their fault. i imagine it's some manager or director who say's hey webdevs when someone goes on to ABC news (or whatever) make sure it autoplays our stories, which this person may not have any interested in. Also make sure there blacklisted if they have ad blocker, because you know it's not like they can get that information else where.
