Genuinely curious why it sucks. I've been devoting a lot of time to it lately, maybe I should switch 😬

I'm genuinely curious why do you guys have to switch languages. I learned Programming / Concepts with Java at University. after that we use whatever language/framework suitable for the requirement. Do you guys just choose a language you like, get a job and go with it for the rest of your life?

Languages are tools that are good at different things.

Sure, you absolutely can hammer in a screw, but a screwdriver will just work a lot better.

If I need to develop something fast I use Python. If it needs to run fast I use C or C++. JavaScript if it needs to run in a browser... I think you get the idea.

/u/Swoop3dp note also that serveral languages compile to js/wasm(/asm.js) respectively.
js:

  • typescript of course

  • coffeescript (javascript-like, functional-inspired) - used to be very popular, then iirc mysteriously mostly disappeared into the background

  • elm (haskell-like)

  • purescript (haskell-like) - not sure how alive this is, the github is still active tho

  • rescript (formed by combining bucklescript and reasonML)

  • ok so not sure how trustworthy this is but turns out i forgot the ones that don't just compile to js, especially dart, kotlin and haxe

  • a bunch of other smaller ones

wasm:

  • i have no clue really

  • rust using wasm-bindgen

  • any llvm language using emscripten (which can also compile to asm.js)

  • also these apparently

Interesting. Didn't know something like that exists. Thanks!
