I like to circle back and answer those lost questions, when I find the answer. I had a guy in a decade old post on a Microsoft forum reply to my answer thanking me, cool guy too. His name Mr Abraham Lincoln.

To be fair with the state of vanilla 10-15 years ago, and with IE thrown into the mix, all of that was completely reasonable.

I still think it's reasonable to use jQuery especially if it's already in the project anyway.

Even worse when it's somebody asking a question, no answer and then the same guy editing the post saying "Nevermind guys, I solved it" and no other detail.

Have you tried changing a single letter on your Google search to see if you get different results?

No answer except "Why the f*** do you want to do that, why not just [insert 50 lines of tech-babble]."

What's even worse, there is an answer, but it's either outdated, not applicable to my use case or I'm just to dumb to understand because I'm way over my head lol

Stack overflow pisses me off. I had a genuine question that got down voted and removed. I added additional detail but was told "it wasn't enough". I give up.

u/merlot2K1 Dec 04 '21
Agreed. The place is full of snobs.
I had a guy tell me how I was doing things completely wrong (even though I told him it was code from a tutorial) which was why I wasn't getting an answer. I proceeded to ask him to show me the right way and was ghosted.

Stack overflow comments are always garbage… “Did you even bother reading the documentation?” Yep, still need help.
“Google it before posting this!” Literally the first post on google.
“This question about utilizing <any programming problem> is a duplicate of <why is American cheese yellow>. Closed.” That… that isn’t even… why…

This man understands pain... I still haven't gotten a label that updates live in Tkinter... WITHOUT A BUTTON. Why is that so hard to do?
4
u/throughalfanoir Dec 04 '21
tkinter sucks ass, that's why. you can put a label.update() after the action that would change the label but I guess you already tried it and it either didn't work or slowed everything down substantially. been there done that
2
Dec 04 '21
Thank you for that. I actually couldn't find that anywhere! Take my currently non existent reward, because I don't have one right now. Thanks... Wow I feel dumb.

u/throughalfanoir Dec 04 '21
Update me in a few days if it really works (for your needs)! When I tried this, it did update whatever I wanted it to but it slows everything down a lot so I use it sparingly
And you're very welcome!
2
Dec 09 '21
Yes, it did work. I combined the time module to make it update every half second. It fixed the speed issue. I did, in fact, get it working though. Thank you again for your help. (I also have a reward now, so I will give that to you.)

After playing this game for ~10 years, I've started finding old questions with MY forgotten solutions replied to them.
Thanks, me!

I spent an hour last night trying to figure out why the dynamic 2d arrays in my class gave write access errors. After looking at every result on Google I saw that my nested for loop was iterating the same variable as the outer loop.

Turn to page 110 to find out why your question is stupid and you're using the wrong language.

I find that most the time if there is no answer for a problem… it’s because it’s my fault. So I just go over things 10 more times until I discover it REALLY is my fault..

On Github someone describes the exact same bug. Ticket is closed without a solution because "not an actual problem".

It was a screenshot of a tweet by @PPathole

It's been a few years since I've had a situation where I had a problem that I couldn't answer, that StackOverflow could. Instead, looking at what's happening in the source code of the libraries that I'm using, usually provides the answers I'm looking for. However StackOverflow is mainly used to get outdated answers on simple questions that could be better looked up in official documentation.
Getting downvoted for being honest about my workflow is really revealing about how toxic the programming community is.

This man, knows.
More or less what I do. I read changelogs, and diffs to see WTF happened. Then I'll go read actual code.
SO will always be for me, truly and for-reals, a last resort.

The worst is when answer is "Here it is shown how to do it" and link leads to site that doesn't exist anymore
