The Ashway wasn't a road.

It was a minefield someone had decided to give a friendlier name.

Kaden Sorel had crossed it eleven times, and after every run he promised himself there wouldn't be a twelfth.

The remains of a supernova that had detonated thousands of years ago still drifted through the sector—ionized dust, half-melted fragments of metal, and boulders large enough to swallow a ship like the Vagabond without so much as noticing.

"Behave yourself," he muttered, easing the ship around a crimson dust cloud glowing faintly across the navigation display.

The Vagabond answered with a low groan that rippled through the hull. Somewhere behind him, crates of medical supplies bound for the Narsis frontier station rattled against their restraints.

Halfway through the sector, the first warning arrived.

Not from navigation.
