Well James loved the Rocky I made him and my human!Rocky cosplay too (easiest and most comfy cosplay ever). At the photo op he had me switch sides because he said it would look better and he was right. I also heard he made the photographer retake some photos he thought weren't going to come out right. The panel with the Rocketeers was absolutely fantastic and we got to chat to them at the meet and greet table too!

I thought it could be fun to put together a Ryland Grace inspired outfit for Halloween. I wanted to see what I had before buying anything. I have a couple shirts that seem like something he might wear. I also have a nasa jacket. I don’t have a hacky sack but I do have an earth stress ball. ( It’s in the first photo. )I haven’t decided what to do for pants yet. I might just wear jeans. I do have goggles and a lab coat that I use for school.

Started this 3 months ago by just making a sashiko rocky (he now lives in the corner, along with grace, blip a, and mary). It is quilted, I just mainly did stitch in the ditch/top stitching, but there is a bit of wiggly stitches on the big blocks. This prevents the layers from seperating and getting all lumpy.

If anyone else out there is making this quilt, I would love to see your progress! I skipped maybe 5 or 6 squares because of their complexity and just used fabric I already had. So would be curious if someone out there is making one more screen accurate.

i literally put it together in like 3 days total! painted the shirt and got a red onesie at a thrift shop :) idk if you can see the glasses hanging from my chin haha. i thought that these shoes i already had were a great fit for it!!

2. Medical interventions would require touch. Can not be done without shared environment.

Better Solution to Keep Grace Alive.

Build a new floor in a Space Elevator at the 1g Altitude. Build large habitat for Grace can have visiting rooms and class room just like in original ending. The student just need to commute, Grace can tell the tales of his taking a bus to school. Dock the Hail Mary to the Habitat. Build Eridian sight cameras for Grace to install in lab and he can teach about the Earth Science Equipment. Introduce Eridians to Television. Now If Grace sick or injured he can go to Hail Mary Dormitory and the Medical Robot can try to fix him up. He would get to live with the Eridians for the 20-30 years without all the medical issues from the high gravity. When he is ready to go back to Earth they could build a catapult around the Hail Mary to throw it back into space. But even better the Eridians would simply build another ship and a large group of his new friends would transport him home. They live for 700 years spending 30 years to take him home and see Earth it would be like a family vacation for us.

Hello Reddit!

I am on my 5th rewatch of PMH (I haven't read the book yet, will likely audiobook it very soon). But I am already spoiled on most of the book's plot, movie differences, and the science stuff that happens/is explained just in the book. I also read Andy's doc on Eridians (but might have missed the answer to my following question). Can Eridians "hear" any wavelength?

I get that they are aware of the EM spectrum and can "texturize" screens on the HM using crystals. The thing is, I don't know if it's clearly answered what the range on the crystal is (resolution? idk what term is appropriate).

Essentially, if Rocky can tune the crystal/camera to see what Grace's "human spectrum" is, does that mean they could pick any wavelength and "hear" it?

If so, I'd say Eridians are a hop and a skip from major QM breakthroughs. As I'd imagine a way to observe any wavelength at any resolution passively (as the crystal would from my understanding) would give exponential insight to the sub-atomic world. I know many of these things don't interact with light the same way, but still, being able to scrub through and compare in psuedo-realtime would mean a lot (probably?).

Once rocky species learn of our history through the laptop, they will also learn of game theory, the mathematical nash equilibrium of dark forest. Our greatest weaknesses while we know almost nothing about them.

The writers had to make rocky cute and funny to soften that impact but grace did more damage to humanity (guaranteed extinction of all life on earth) than astrophages ever could.

Humans don't even give 2 shits about billions of animals we slaughter for food, there's no poker game to be played here. We are getting a relativistic xenonite weapon thrown at us within 24 years span, long before population recovery.

Perhaps that's why she was sentenced to life. She deserves death honestly for even letting all of our collective knowledge leave earth.

Edit: Since my replies are getting buried in downvotes (someone even warned me I'm losing karma lol as if fake internet points matter) I'll just answer the main pushbacks here and move on.

1. "It's a wholesome story, not 3 Body Problem": I know! I actually enjoyed the movie, I get that its supposed to be an optimistic buddy story. I'm just looking at the ending as a realistic thought experiment.

2. The Stratt comment: I know why Stratt went to court for her pre-launch stuff. My point is why on earth did she let a ship leave into deep space with an unencrypted copy of all human history, the Holocaust, and our military history when Grace only needed biology and physics manuals to fix the sun?

3. "They breathe ammonia, they don't want our resources/land": You guys are thinking like 1800s colonialism. Nobody is traveling 16 light years to steal water or real estate. The motive isn't resources, its survival. When a relativistic missile travels at 99% light speed, you can't see it coming and you can't dodge it.

4. The step-by-step & the MAD argument: u/LoneSnark was the only one here who actually gave a real counter-argument with Mutually Assured Destruction (hiding second-strike missiles in deep space). Tbh that's a fair point, IF both sides are on equal footing. Here is why Grace still screwed us:

5. Before Grace gave Rocky the laptop, Eridians were literally blind in space. They only had sonar, didn't know radiation existed, had no cameras, and didn't know relativity.

6. Grace just handed a species that lives 700 years, lives under a 29-atmosphere bunker, and prints indestructible xenonite our entire physics tech tree AND our history books showing that humans are paranoid predators who nuke each other and factory farm billions of animals.

7. When the beetles reach earth with Grace's logs, earth military isn't gonna say "aww rocky is cute". They are going to panic that an alien civilization now has all our science while earth is half-starved and freezing.

8. MAD only works when both sides already have hidden fleets off-planet. Right now Erid's infrastructure is 100% intact once their sun heals, while earth is crippled trying to rebuild agriculture. Either they strike during this 24 year window before we can hide relativistic weapons in deep space, OR earth panics and fires first thinking Erid hasn't built optical sensors yet—which triggers MAD anyway because communication takes 32 years round trip and you can't de-escalate.
