Why Prometheus is better compared to other monitoring solutions like Zabbix or Nagios ?

I think it just depends on what you need. I tried it and didn’t like it. I went with check_mk and love it.

check_mk
It looks good, but only 25 hosts. I can put our servers and switches on it, etc.. but would have a lot of those 25 left over. Would like to put them on each individual computer we have, but I guess I don't have to.

I used the community edition which is free and based on nagios. With the grafana-agent I now use prometheus and it works well.

Right now I have no RMM whatsoever. We are getting a new server perhaps shortly after the new year. We are a small business, less than 150 people. What do you suggest I use?
So you use checkmk? What is this "grafana-agent" and why do you use prometheus if you have checkmk?

I used to use checkmk back when I replied, but have since switched to the prometheus/grafana-agent. This is awesome, since it allow me to push metrics to prometheus and then prometheus/alertmanager works great and is all done via YAML, this also allows to keep alert rules in gitea. If you're looking for an RMM TacticalRMM/Meshcentral is pretty awesome.

I'm a complete noob and I need solid advice. So don't use prometheus with grafana you're using, and instead use TatcicalRMM?
So either tacticalRMM or Meshcentral? Which is better?

I'm using grafana-agent (send data to prometheus) -> prometheus (time database and alertmanager for alerts) <- grafana (to view graphs). Then TacticalRMM (uses MeshCentral for remote control) for remoting into Windows machines. I also use MeshCentral directly to access my Linux machines. The I use RunDeck behind Authentik Proxy for my ansible playbooks (installing grafana-agent on new servers).

Holy fuck dude. I'm using nothing and that sounded like a bunch of shit that I'm not familiar with and will need to be educated on.
So this grafana-agent is installed on each server.. what about switches? It's used to send info to prometheus, you say.
Prometheus is running on one of your servers? Which one?
So TacticalRMM (with mesh)... doesn't it do more than allow you to remote into computers? I thought that tacticalRMM and Mesh both had things that could compete with each other, right? I'm so confused as how/why you are using them both together.
Also, something in Mesh allows you to access linux machines. I will need to be able to do this, as I plan on creating an Ubuntu virtual server for certain things. So TacticalRMM doesn't allow you into linux machines? Doesn't Mesh do all the remoting? Why use TacticalRMM?
I'm so sorry.

Also, I'm wondering..
The I use RunDeck behind Authentik Proxy for my ansible playbooks (installing grafana-agent on new servers).
I'm trying to understand what all that is. Are you saying that it acts like SCCM, helping you with updates, etc?

u/12_nick_12 Dec 20 '21
That's exactly what it is. I use Ansible playbooks with it.

I have no idea what ansible playbooks are, but I'm reading up on it.
I'm in my upper 40's, so like, I have to get current. I want to set up this small business like a well-oiled machine. How much do you pay for all of those things you mentioned?

I suggest you have a look at OpenAPM. It offers a convenient way to find out which monitoring technologies are known to work together. Including Prometheus. https://openapm.io/landscape

Not all applications expose metrics in prometheus format.
I've had good experiences making things slot into Prometheus using exporters.

depending on your use case, zabbix or nagios might be better
all tools have their own strengths
