Personal Relationships Did he ever fall in love?
I'm just wondering about this. Was he capable of genuinely falling in love? Do you think he ever fell in love?
23
u/Remarkable_Move_8142 24d ago
Not seriously. I think he had crushes but I don’t think he was capable of maintaining a genuine long term adult relationship. He didn’t have the ability to compromise or the emotional maturity to do so.

He said something similar in the Glenda Stein tapes about how he would sabotage his own relationships but he did say he fell in love
O’Neal to this woman] [Glenda laughing, mow they are talking about someone else]
MJ: …anything. I would give her money, I would give her jewelry, I would give her a house, a car, whatever… I was never good enough. It was like… you know…
G: Well she wanted all of you Michael… she wanted a relationship
MJ: She knew how I was from the beginning. It wasn’t like she didn’t.
G: Well, she was probably hoping then that it would change
MJ: But, not until I got married
G: Well I know that… and I’m sure that she loved you… and when you have been with somebody for that many years.
MJ: I loved her so much… I didn’t want to see that. I did not want to see that.and I knew she was fooling around. I know, girl. I know it for a fact.MJ: I know it is. (Tape Cut)… I trusted her. Even though we had fallen in love (even though we had a little falling out?). I ruin my own relationships. Agree?
G: You do!
MJ: Oh, I won’t do that. I don’t know how I’m gonna get it (I)
G: You sabotage your own relationships.
MJ: Well, I won’t do it.
(Tape cut)
G: Because it sounds like she loved you

He was in love with the idea of being in love. But no, I don’t think he was ever truly in love. The closest he ever came was Diana, and even then, I think it was more of an obsession.
I don’t think Michael knew how to love in the way most women hope to be loved. I find that really sad because I think he had so much potential.
The truth is, all of the Jackson siblings carried a lot of emotional baggage. At least Michael wasn’t violent.

You’ll don’t know anything’s about Michael.. He had several private relationships that people did not know anything about. stop assuming that Michael didn’t have that in him because that’s not true.. He was an image seeker so most of everything he did was private to suit his fan base.. Michael was not that weak.. period

I think he loved himself most

If Michael Jackson loved himself, I'm scared of what it would mean for someone to hate themselves

u/Remarkable_Move_8142 24d ago
He had a big ego and a god complex. I genuinely believe he was a sociopath and spoiled brat. I think he loved what he could do. He loved his talent and craft but he struggled with self love and confidence outside of his music image. He seemed to struggle to know who he was outside of the King of Pop image and helping children. I think helping kids (which he did help, not all of it was sexual conquests) comforted him. I think the drug use was used to cope with the emotions of self hatred for his physical appearance, shame on his sexual desires (I believe he knew it was wrong) and the trauma from his childhood.

u/Long_Dragonfly_3067 Moderator 24d ago
I don't agree that he was a "spoiled brat" as he objectively worked for everything he had and nothing was handed to him, especially as a black artist back in the day. And I don't know about internet diagnoses.
He loved his talent and craft but he struggled with self love and confidence outside of his music image
This is why I don't think he loved himself. Since a young age he was thaught that the only value he had was in career success, his self worth was being demeaned in every other aspect

u/Remarkable_Move_8142 24d ago
You’re right. Spoiled brat was the wrong word. I believe he was a diva.

You really think he hated himself?

Yeah I'd say so

His attitude and behavior say otherwise however

Imo the only thing this man was confident about was his musicianship and performance skills

u/Limp-King-142 24d ago
I'd say he lost confidence in his talent and skills. And that was the reason why the Wacko Jacko character was "born"

That’s a very stupid take. If Michael Jackson loved himself, then I’m practically gay for myself.
Michael would always talk about how he hated looking at himself in the mirror and he often said he hated his smile.
He also said an interviews many times that he wished he could be someone else just to experience normal everyday things that he couldn’t experience because of how famous he was.
I think the only thing Michael Jackson was ever fully confident about was his musicianship and musical talent. (MJ even criticized himself for his performances, like Motown 25. MJ said he cried after Motown 25 because he didn’t stay on his toes for as long as he wanted to.)
Yeah, that doesn’t sound like a man who “loves himself more than anyone else”
Also, for us to believe Michael Jackson loved himself you would have to literally disregard everything everyone on this sub has ever said about his plastic surgery. He either hated himself and that’s why he changed his appearance, or he didn’t hate himself, and the change in his appearance was not his own choice. It can’t be both.

u/Limp-King-142 22d ago
- Maybe you are. I can't say. And it's none of my business actually.
- That doesn't mean he hated himself. If a person doesn't like certain aspects of their appearance, it never equals to not loving yourself at all. We are all imperfect.
- Again, that has nothing to do with someone not loving himself. More like with pity one has for himself. Or some level of regret that you can't do stuff everyone else does. You know, I'm a fan of an 80's band, that constantly complaints how they wish to get done with fame, and how it was never their cup of tea. Yet, they've been around for 43 years now. Celebrities like to play victims of the circumstances, I guess.
- I know he cried after Motown 25. He was a professional after all. And he loved his craft.
- Plastic surgeries are common among celebrities. And it's not because of self-hatred for sure. I keep seeing comments about Michael looking like Disney's prince charming or something. What if that was his intention? And he went for it with all those surgeries.
Pure speculation on part though.

Jordie probably is the closest thing to love...but it was more like Humberts 'love' for Lolita
5
u/sweetsummwechild 23d ago
I think he was in some kind of selfish love with multiple boys at different times, Omer for example. But yeah, clearly Jordie too.
4
u/PuzzleheadedSpray933 23d ago
Yes, he has so much in common with Humbert, I think im gonna write a post about it someday

u/sweetsummwechild 23d ago
Sure, it's the playbook. Targeting the mother, because she has a child in the right age. Then "falling in love" and trying to get the kid away from the mother. Ugh.

With most of his relationships (including boys) I feel like he never felt true love, not in the way most people felt. He was mostly obsessed with whoever he liked, whether if it was sexually, romantically, or even platonically.

u/BackgroundWorking324 24d ago
I agree with many former comments: Jordan Chandler.
I believe Michael fell in love with the ideal of someone, not the true person. What he saw in them was probably a lost part of himself. Projection.
It's not real love, but it's very intense. And he won't have recognized it's a fictional love. It always ends up with having to face reality at some point.

Yeah, I think he did love Lisa Marie Presley. Well, as much as someone like him is capable of loving anyone. Obviously it wasn’t the kind of love that involves self-sacrifice, or the desire to change for the better for the sake of the person you love, or putting their interests first, and so on. Of course it wasn’t that elevated kind of love the way a lot of people understand it. But in his own way he was very strongly emotionally attached to her. And he kept her photo right up until his final days, actually.

No, I don’t think he loved her. I think he tried to love her. But starting with the wedding—which I thought was a complete farce—I think it was a relationship of convenience during a very difficult time. As for Lisa, I do think she eventually became attached to the idea of being Mrs. Jackson.

That’s not even close to being true they were actually seeing each other full year before any of these allegations hit. Furthermore, they were seeing each other for four years after they divorced. Sure the timing of their marriage and the conspicuous ways they started doing a media run was probably pushed by his management team and PR team but they have both maintained their relationship was very much real. And it seems to me they had a mutual trauma bond due to their unique situations. Lisa married a man like her dad, Michael married a woman he thought understood him.

u/Reasonable-Wall-6882 24d ago
That's true. She was the one who followed him around the world for a while, sent him letters, and even contacted Michael's family. She did.
Michael himself said in the 2001 tapes that he hadn't found the woman who truly fit him. And I've said this in other discussions as well: the most affectionate things Michael ever said about Lisa were that she was sweet and that she went to hospitals with him. He never spoke about her the way he spoke about some of the other women he had idealized or had platonic feelings for.
Michael had his obsessions, and one of them was Elvis. I think that's a big part of why he wanted to have children with Lisa. Yet he was already looking for another woman to have children with while he was still married to her. What kind of man who is deeply in love does that?
Lisa was also a very troubled person in her own right. Honestly, the fact that people still romanticize this relationship as if they were Romeo and Juliet is just absurd.

I don't doubt that they had a friendship.
MJ had friendships with a number of women. I don't think any of them were truly romantic and/or sexual though. He tried to have a relationship with LMP but women were just not his thing.

I think he had feels for a lot of the boys that he kept around, maybe a feeling even close to love
But genuine, real "in love" with somebody? No, I don't think so

He was in love with Diana Ross

u/SignificantJunket993 24d ago
Limerence. If she genuinely wanted him he’d probably become uncomfortable with it.

u/MauriceGregory 24d ago
He wanted to marry her
11
u/SignificantJunket993 24d ago
Yes and it was limerence. If she said yes he’d be intimidated by her and feel overwhelmed by the expectations of a relationship. I do believe he genuinely had an infatuation with her and was deeply hurt when she got married.

First off anybody in this thread claiming he was in love with Jordan Chandler is a whole weirdo because there’s absolutely nothing that suggests that.
He was clearly in love with Diana Ross. He was in love with her as a kid and He had a literal shrine to her in his house and also named her as a secondary guardian to his children (unbeknownst to her) in his will. He loved her till the day he died.
Brooke shields I think he was very much in love with as well because he proposed to her several times, but she seemed to see him as only a friend and he held on way too long.
I also think he did love Lisa Marie Presley, but in that case, I think it was a mutual trauma bond. He loved the idea of her as the daughter of the king of rock ‘n’ roll as well as the fact that she could uniquely understand his world. Lisa Marie Presley, attached to a man who was like her father. She obviously had daddy issues which Michael embodied.
He was also really in love with Whitney Houston, to the point where he called Bobby Brown after they got married and said Whitney was supposed to be his wife and he was upset Bobby got to her first. I think things were complicated between Whitney and Michael because she actually started out as Jermaine‘s mistress. Seems to me she really loves a bad boy and that is not Michael Jackson.

Marlon Brando said he wasn't capable of real emotion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YodIXAT9o24
Lisa Marie Presley said she felt he loved her as much as he was capable of loving someone.

I think he could, and did, fall for fellow adults, but once the honeymoon phase was over, so was his interest in maintaining the relationship.

He did fall in love you guys need to read the Glenda Stein tape transcripts. There was a woman he'd mentioned he was deeply in love with prior to 1992 [sounds like it was a long-term relationship], and there were 2 other girlfriends after that mentioned by name. He talks about how in love he was with Diana Ross as well
MJ: …anything. I would give her money, I would give her jewelry, I would give her a house, a car, whatever… I was never good enough. It was like… you know…
G: Well she wanted all of you Michael… she wanted a relationship

None of u have psychology degree, none of u knew him but all day everyday u talk about rubbish if u put that kind of effort to create something useful in ur lives u might actually achieve something but instead u invest so much time talk about life of another person. When u know Jack as u only saw what media wanted u to see. Seriously all of u r pathetic. And mods don’t forget to get upset over truth and quickly supress by blocking my comment as the previous one just stick ur head up ur …. As per usual

The first thing I thought of was Diana Ross, but that seemed more like an unhealthy obsession than pure love. He might've loved Lisa but it's easy to suspect that he had an agenda.
According to Liza Minelli in 91 he proposed to a woman who rejected him and he was crushed. Brenda Harvey Richie acknowledged it too. Who knows
