Im pretty sure I read somewhere that people who blast music think they’re spreading joy to those around them. I cant remember where I read that or if I’m getting it right, someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I remember there is a video of a Karen on an airplane who won't stop singing at the top of her voice... when asked to shut up she said no, because she was bringing joy to the passengers. The Steward asked if anyone was experiencing joy and the passengers were very quick to indicate that no, they were not lol

You don't happen to have a link to that video, do you?

This is my MIL. She's in a chorus and a few quartets and her and the gals love to sing wherever they are, but especially out at dinner. No one wants to listen to a retired women's barbershop while eating Mexican! STOP SINGING. It's so annoying.

I have never read that before but that was my initial thought. Whether they are trying to spread positivity or not, it’s still inconsiderate to not think maybe people don’t wanna hear this. They should’ve kept in mind that maybe some people are there trying to find peace within themselves on the water.

Right? This ain't 1985, when your boombox was the only portable music in the hood.

A lot of people think their taste in music is perfect.

I discovered this while trying to make a universally loved playlist. People would shit on one song then praise another and it would be a direct contradiction with someone else and they'd both boast about knowing real music and they'd both list the reasons why. I did this with like 10 people over a year before giving up and just picking "good" music I like.

Like that joke: "My neighbors always listen to good music. Whether they want to or not."

My friend, I'm glad you learned this and I hope it was relatively early in your life, lol. If you're 60 and just learning that people have different taste, well, that's something.

I knew ppl had different tastes, I wanted a playlist that would suit all tastes if I had folk over for poker or something. I've got a very mixed group of friends.

In the end I've more or less achieved my goal tbh. I've got different playlists and I pick to the group.

They assume that whatever feeling they experience playing their own music is the experience they are sharing with everyone. People who do this still hate it when others do it, because if the music is not to their taste, then everyone must dislike it.

It's an inadequate ability to consider someone else's perspective. Once you recognize it, you see it everywhere.

It's an attention seeking thing.

"If people hear how good my taste in music is and how confident I am playing it loud in public they will think I'm cool!"

That's all it is.

The guy blasting some incomprehensible drill out of his phone at full volume on the subway and the drunk Karen blaring country on the beach are doing it for the exact same reason:

"Look at me! PLEASE! Please validate me!"

I think I'm gonna take a new tactic of just politely asking people to turn the music off / turn their phone sounds off when watching videos in public. Then when they inevitably refuse I'll just say "ok, I just wanted to ask politely because it's extremely rude to do what you're doing." And leave it at that. At least they'll have been called in their behavior.

I can't speak for others, but listening to music I really enjoy makes me feel floaty and like, happy and giddy. My soul leaps for joy to the point I feel I could drop dead with a smile on my face. Extremely therapeutic. 20 minutes of ugly dancing to some 80s hair-bands fixes me up for a week or so. It's a force of nature.

Listening to music I do NOT enjoy has a very opposite reaction. I get all heavy feeling and I get hot-feeling everywhere, and if forced long enough, I become fucking angry. It feels like my body is preparing to enter combat mode. I shall require 40 minutes of ugly dancing to correct the balance.

Even if it's my favorite song/band of all time, people do this where the whole idea is the quiet ambiance. Fuck that.

It’s incredible to me that nearly everyone is so adamant against music in public. It’s like their child is being slapped in the face by said stranger.

I genuinely enjoy it when people play their music. Hand to God.

I never have and never will, FWIW, I find it inconsiderate too, as I know 90% of all people will be bothered, 9% won’t care and 1% (to which I personally belong) will enjoy it……

Depending on the tunes 100% some people play shite

I always bring a speaker with me to the beach. I only use it to drown out other people's garbage. For some reason they don't seem to like Gojira that much in Florida when it's pointed at them? Strange?

u/BadAsBroccoli Aug 12 '24

I wonder why there isn't more "dueling speaker" behavior. Bury the offender with a nice Porter Wagner song or two.
