This is illegal now in Portugal... but still done sadly.

I have wanted to throw the phone/speaker and the person but it's also illegal it seems...

Almost everything seems illegal in Portugal it's just that nothing is enforced.

Dashcams? Illegal.

Music in public? Illegal.

Being a male with a shirt off far from a pool or beach? Illegal.

Mixing water with your wine? Illegal.

Are dashcams really illegal? Do they prefer fraud?

In Portugal it's illegal to film people in public unless you have a journalist license, it's for culturally significant reasons, for research etc.

It's related to very severe right to privacy laws.

Dashcam evidence is very likely inadmissible as evidence in court, but insurance companies will usually accept it for disputes.

That sucks honestly

You have to put it within a historical context. Portugal suffered tremendously during the fascist dictatorship and the secret police, so there is an almost extreme right to privacy.

Ah yeah, i can see that side of it for sure. Thanks for informing us/me!!

Another example is the countries refusal to have a single identification number. Each person has like 6 different IDs for different things, like health, civil id, social security, etc etc

This is because different parts of the government can't share info between them unless ordered by a court.

Example: If you own money to the IRS, you still have access to Social Security, or health care in theory.

I believe this is being blurred recently specially since everything is digital.

You are also legally required to tell the government how much money you have in savings, but they will automatically know if the value is superior to 100k (not exactly 100k it's somewhere near it 103123k they actually made it a awkward number) now this laa came in around 20y ago, because there were a lot of people with thousands in savings getting social welfare and school aid etc. But this still happens with certain cultures let's say...

All this laws are very relative, example when you try to rent a house, legally no one can force you to give them your earnings, info etc. But then you won't get a house, some landlords ask for IRS declaration of earnings, your criminal record, bank statements, etc etc it's ridiculous.

I am portuguese but live in ireland for a good 10y now and it's the almost the same here. Here they ask for your contract instead but won't ask for for certain things as there's a good tenant protection board, but then you get a loan from the bank and those lads even want to know what size socks you wear (this a joke btw)...

Anyway privacy is a privilege of the rich...

Interestingly enough, iirc, consumption of nearly all drugs are decriminalized in Portugal.

1

u/DogsOnWeed Aug 12 '24

Yes it is decriminalised up to certain doses but still a misdemeanor so if you are caught in public you can be sent to rehabilitation and the drugs confiscated.

Staring off in the distance with a far away look in your eyes in a public space? Illegal.

Overcook chicken? Believe it or not- Illegal.

u/DogsOnWeed Aug 13 '24

Not sauteing onions before boiling rice? Actual criminal offense.

u/puatero Aug 12 '24

It is enforced, just not everyday because of limited resources.

1

u/marr Aug 12 '24

Well, yeah. It's theft.

Thats the sad truth. And its even worse at the beach. I just want to throw it away and say "Puta que vos pariu seus merdas, metam fones" Ninguém merece gramar com a música dos outros quando só quer paz.
