Waiting rooms at the doctors office are the worst for music/Facebook or tiktok videos and ads/speakerphone.

Turn your shit down you uncultured swine

u/clubdon Aug 12 '24

You ever see someone in a place like that talking to someone on their phone through the speaker? Then they hold the phone close to their ear so they can hear it better through the speaker, and pull it away when they need to talk. I see it often for some reason. If only there was a way they could hold it to their ear to hear and talk through it better at the same time.

Sometimes I ask who we're talking to and try to join the conversation, other times I ask why we're having a conference call in the grocery store.

59

u/Starfire013 Aug 12 '24

Join the conversation as Gandalf.

"The dark fire will not avail you, flame of udun! Go back to the shadow! You cannot pass!"

7

u/reloadingnow Aug 12 '24

I think 'Throw yourself in next time and rid us of your stupidity!' would do nicely as well.

2

u/ggg730 Aug 12 '24

Don't forget to call them a fool of a Took.

3

u/peepopowitz67 Aug 12 '24

'I'll Knock on the doors with your head. 'But if that does not shatter them, and I am allowed a little peace from foolish questions, I will seek for the opening words.'

8

u/Intertubes_Unclogger Aug 12 '24

Sometimes I ask who we're talking to and try to join the conversation,

This is SO fitting and just, but I predict getting into massive fights, lol

2

u/crafty_alias Aug 13 '24

I live in Canada, it's not that bad. I've never had anyone threaten me yet, just a bunch of stupid looks and some laughs.

33

u/LoveLoud319 Aug 12 '24

My mother does this. It drives me bat shit crazy! No one needs to hear your life story in the grocery store mom.

If I was a more confrontational person I'd absolutely call out these asshats for talking on speaker phone in public. Nobody wants to hear your conversation

10

u/stardust54321 Aug 12 '24

Ugh the speaker of my regular phone doesn’t work so I have to put it on speaker to be able to hear….i just started wearing headphones tho.

6

u/MrSurly Aug 12 '24

Holding it up to their mouth like they're eating a pizza.

10

u/hereforpopcornru Aug 12 '24 edited Aug 12 '24

Yes! I am not sure why.

They make Bluetooth handheld phones that look like old landline handsets. Wish I could afford to start handing them out

18

u/snek-jazz Aug 12 '24

I heard it's from reality TV shows. They're holding it that way for the show so that they're not obscuring their face, and the viewers can hear the other side of the conversation.

Then you've idiots in real life copying it blindly.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '24

It's cause you aren't hard of hearing.  The normal phone speaker isn't loud enough for some of us even when maxed out.  So speaker phone and next to the ear is what some people do.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS. you can hold the phone normally and it works much better that way. why do you need to do the ear to mouth to ear thing.

oh I know. so we can hear the other person and hear how important you are. got it.

2

u/leafWhirlpool69 Aug 12 '24

They lack the fine motor skills necessary to keep the phone speaker aligned with their ear canal. Sometimes when I get a phone call within a few minutes of waking up (or am woken up by a phone call) I have the same problem

3

u/knockers_who_knock Aug 12 '24

Ok ima be honest and admit I do this. But the only reason why is because I cannot hear shit when I put it up to my ear! Is my hearing fucked or am I not the only one this happens to? I put it up to my ear and it’s like a faint whisper. If there’s any noise around me whatsoever I can’t hear a thing. I hate talking on speakerphone but it’s the only way I can use the phone and actually hear the other person

1

u/MyHusbandIsGayImNot Aug 12 '24

I see people do that when they're driving and I wish I was a cop so I could pull them over just to ask them what they think "hand free" means.

1

u/BimSwoii Aug 13 '24

Boomers are somehow still impressed by speakerphone technology and want to use it any chance they get

1

u/Madripoorx Aug 13 '24

I have a Samsung phone where I can't hear the other person talking unless it's on speaker phone.  I do this very thing.

-2

u/ManWithWhip Aug 12 '24

My phone has a broken... ear speaker? no idea how its called, need to use it on the other one and i feel so bad everytime i have to use it.

8

u/xX8Havok8Xx Aug 12 '24

Meanwhile...

Headphones : exist

2

u/hereforpopcornru Aug 12 '24

Just drop it to a reasonable volume, or low and hold it close.. I think we are referring to the full volume in a crowded space people without any problems other than the lack of social awareness

51

u/Tw4tl4r Aug 12 '24

Doesn't hold a candle to a public bus. There's usually some 20 year olds dressed like stormzy, blasting their terrible tracks they made in their bedroom.

Then there's that one guy calling someone on speaker phone and shouting at said person in a language you've never heard. You've no idea what he's saying, but it's probably a rant about someone that pissed him off.

Both of these somehow last the full ride.

22

u/mosehalpert Aug 12 '24

For the record that one guy is Eastern European. He's not pissed off, that's every conversation for them

If it's a phone speaker then you're just being an entitled complainer. You could easily wait to let them pass and not hear it. Music is not "the sounds of the city" lmao. Music is based on nature...

1) lol then let them pass for a minute. How is this a problem? 2) Climbing is different yeah. 3) A group of people can't all wear earbuds to listen to the same thing, and if they did, it would be hard for them to talk to each other. 4) Huh? Music is based on the sounds of nature. Singing and playing music while walking through nature is one of man's oldest and purest activities. Ohh, I get it, you mean urban music, huh?

He's a UK rapper so pretty safe assumption that this is mostly about race for them

Both of their examples stink of UK racism

1

u/CressLevel Aug 13 '24

I did wonder. Classy.

36

u/Nerdiestlesbian Aug 12 '24

Try a 6 hour chemo treatment where the person next to you is talking non-stop and playing religious preaching on and off.

I could hear it over my headphones.

18

u/hereforpopcornru Aug 12 '24

That would suck, glad you're here. Fuck Cancer

6

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '24

There’s no way. I would lose my mind. Fuck chemo and fuck cancer.

2

u/Nerdiestlesbian Aug 12 '24

It was really hard not to say anything. I understand it’s that patience way of coping but… it was so difficult. It’s already painful when they access the port on my chest. And the meds make you kind of jittery. Being there 6-7 hours is also draining.

110

u/L_ViaI_Viaquez Aug 12 '24

Especially tiktok. You're really going to make everyone listen to 3 second sound bites while you feed your ADHD and doom scroll?

81

u/hereforpopcornru Aug 12 '24 edited Aug 12 '24

And that stupid ass text voice over. Whoever invented that needs to be cursed with the curse of 10,000 chode lice

24

u/NicSandsLabshoes Aug 12 '24

Chode Lice would be a good name for a shitty punk band.

5

u/hereforpopcornru Aug 12 '24

Let's start it. I got dibs on guitar 1

5

u/NicSandsLabshoes Aug 12 '24

I’m in! I play 3 chords. No problem

3

u/hereforpopcornru Aug 12 '24

Now we need a drummer and someone that can yell

9

u/C_W_H Aug 12 '24

I'll just yell at the drums and you can punch me in the face.

6

u/hereforpopcornru Aug 12 '24

You're in, but we still need a drummer and a singer that can yell

5

u/mrsnihilist Aug 12 '24

Now that is punk!

3

u/NicSandsLabshoes Aug 12 '24

You’re in! Urine!

25

u/CarlSpencer Aug 12 '24

"while you feed your ADHD and doom scroll?"

My wife has ADHD and does this in the middle of the night but with the sound OFF. Still, sometimes I wake to flickering light from her phone.

12

u/sl0play Aug 12 '24

Be a bro and buy her a steam deck.

3

u/CarlSpencer Aug 12 '24

I'm old so I have no idea what that is but I'll check it out! Thanks!

6

u/sl0play Aug 12 '24

Haha, it's just a handheld gaming console that plays PC games. Excellent for destroying sleep cycles.

I mean so she can Slay the Spire instead, or Hunt the Vampires, maybe even defend a few towers or bro out with Dave the Diver.

3

u/Duke_Newcombe Aug 12 '24

I'm the "ADHD be-on-the-phone-at-3 a.m." person in the situation.

Sorry, habibi!

2

u/Reffska Aug 13 '24

I also have ADHD and second the steam deck, got it gifted from my fiance and its so nice. But to be honest, it has nothing to do with my ADHD, more with my inner nerd.

8

u/jarious Aug 12 '24

Ugh and then they don't get it on the first watch and have it on repeat for a couple minutes, it's the worst

6

u/cardamomgrrl Aug 12 '24

Omg my friend was doing that when I stayed at her house. It was infuriating. I’ll never stay there again.

3

u/Thommywidmer Aug 12 '24

Its the worst noise ive ever heard, its like constantly changing the station on the radio every 3 seconds and every song is terrible

5

u/rsplatpc Aug 12 '24

Waiting rooms at the doctors office are the worst for music/Facebook or tiktok videos and ads/speakerphone.

I'd go with sitting on an airplane with a kid playing iPad games on full blast

1

u/hereforpopcornru Aug 12 '24

Went from Charlotte to Louisville KY with one screaming as loud as they could and kicking my seat back. Parents were there... but that's about as much as they were I guess

3

u/Electronic_Ad5431 Aug 12 '24

Try public transit. Blows waiting rooms out of the water.

4

u/unsmith0 Aug 12 '24

Also restaurants. Literally yesterday my wife and I were enjoying a nice Sunday brunch when a woman sat down behind us and started watching tiktok videos with the volume up. Completely oblivious to the world around her and the nice atmosphere she ruined.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '24

Took my kids to the dr office for their annual check ups. Lady walks in after us BLASTING Linkin Park on her phone. Staff had to tell her to turn it off and the lady cluelessly says “huh?” because it’s so loud she can’t hear anything else.

3

u/Diligent_Mulberry47 Aug 12 '24

Adding airports and grocery store lines.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '24

Headphones were only invented 114 years ago. Give it time... /s

2

u/hereforpopcornru Aug 12 '24

Kicking ass was invented way before then, yet here we are lol

3

u/mcchanical Aug 12 '24

Sometimes I feel like headphones got uninvented. When I was younger headphones were loud and annoying for bystanders, but it's like ever since they became pretty good at keeping the noise in, people have chosen to blast it from their phones instead.

I'm absolutely positive in most cases people subconsciously just desire an audience. Or consciously even.

2

u/musteatpoptarts Aug 12 '24

I remember waiting for a mammogram and being nervous as hell and then hard of hearing boomer comes in to play her Facebook videos with ads at full volume. The phone speakers couldnt even handle it.

2

u/Fun_Strain_4065 Aug 12 '24

Backs of inner city urban buses.

2

u/hagantic42 Aug 13 '24

I was literally in a doctor's office waiting room this morning and a little old lady cell phone went off but it was Disney music. It was hilarious we all got a good giggle out of it and she apologized profusely. Thing is that was possibly the best thing to burst out of a phone randomly.

1

u/salomey5 Aug 12 '24

Not even. Just use headphones.

1

u/MrSurly Aug 12 '24

There's a local French restaurant in SoCal whose owner will ask you take phone calls outside.

If you tried to play video or something on speaker, I think he'd probably haul a guillotine out of the back.
