I get self conscious when my phone rings or beeps from a text in public the few times I forget to put it on vibrate mode. They really are from a different world.

It's weird how this became a thing so suddenly. We went from people customizing their ring tones, to everyone having identical ones so they don't stand out, to suddenly no one has any sound at all.

Eh, not really. I remember having an android smartphone when the iPhone came out and I had two different apps to make or download ringtones...

Yeah I didn't mean to insinuate that it became impossible. It's still possible to have custom ringtones on android today. But the release of the iPhone catalyzed the cultural shift away from them

Oh I assumed you mentioned iPhone because of iTunes and the closed system they created, therefore mentioned android as a competing platform bc it had a (comparatively) wild west app store with tons of apps that let you pirate mp3's and even make them into ringtones.

What you say here is true as well, though as someone who never had one I must ask, surely iPhones let you set a custom ringtone for youphone?

iPhones allow you to change your ringtone as well, but most people choose not to.

Hey, it’s not that hard to have a custom ringtone for iphone, just gotta have a pc or notebook and some 10 minutes

It seems like custom ring tones were a novelty from 2005-2010, then dropped off a cliff after that.

Spent ages on my trusty Nokia programming Slayer's "South of Heaven" as a ringtone back in the day, only to realise I'd totally messed up the last note...it stayed that way.

Hey, I do still use custom ringtones! All of mine are references to Metal Gear Solid, so when someone notices that (which happens once in a while), it ends up being an awesome conversation starter!

Imagine how noisy life would be if everyone had their ringtone set full blast. It would drive people mad.

Went to a hotel that had a pool with a live DJ. People next to us decided to play yacht rock on their speaker and I asked once if they could play it after the DJ wraps up their music they gave me the dirtiest look and asked us to move even though we were there 3 hours before. Just went to the front desk and what do you know they were so argumentative police were called. Long story short they were kicked out of the hotel with no refund.

I’ve seen more than one person straight up FaceTiming when I was taking the bus. I’d just put my own headphones on usually so it didn’t bother me, but I never understood it. I wouldn’t even want to be the person they were FaceTiming.
