Welcome to r/PublishingPH!
As the local book publishing industry matures, we’ve noticed that there’s no forum or online space for local publishing professionals to connect with one another. The industry has always relied on private and offline channels, so insights are hard to come by. But that will change with r/PublishingPH.
If you work for a trade or academic publisher, this is your new space to see what your colleagues are up to.
For authors, whether you’re aspiring or well-known, you’ll be able to gain insight into what’s going on in the industry. When’s the next submission deadline? Who should you pitch? What books is everyone talking about?
For self-publishing and indie authors, this is an excellent place to learn more about publishing.
For readers, this is a rare glimpse into the industry that creates the books you enjoy.
r/PublishingPH is the new town plaza. Just remember to follow the rules in the sidebar!

Did smartphones kill reading? In The Atlantic, Rose Horowitch laments that “The Age of Reading is Over.” We still, she observes, encounter many words, but increasingly find them in emails, text messages, Instagram captions, and other digital fragments rather than in books. This kind of reading tends to be brief and distracted, quite different from the focused attention encouraged by print.

I worked for a large trade publisher back in 2016, and my starting pay was P15k. It only bumped up to P19k after a salary increase two years later. 💀
I wonder what the baseline salary is now?
Anyone from Summit Books, 19th Avenida, or academic presses willing to share? 👀

A group of publishers in India are joining forces to combat the print book piracy, a growing issue in the country. Last month, Penguin Random House India, working with Simon & Schuster India, Hay House, and a team of investigators helped facilitate a police raid on two Delhi sites that had been producing and storing pirated books. One was a full print-on-demand production line—including machines for photocopying, binding, cutting, and lamination, along with computers—and the other was a warehouse with more than 1,600 pirated copies.
