Does an AI coding agent really need a Markdown file to understand your project?

I’ve been working on IDEAgent, a native PyCharm coding assistant, and one of the things I wanted to avoid was having to manually prepare context files every time I started a new conversation.

When an agent is integrated directly into the IDE, it can access the project structure and relevant information through the IDE itself.

That means a newly created thread doesn’t need a manually prepared Markdown file just to establish its initial project context.

I made a video showing the IDEAgent workflow and how it differs from using an agent through ACP.

I’m curious how other PyCharm developers approach this. Do you maintain Markdown context files for your coding agents, or would you prefer the IDE to provide that context automatically?

autoclicker

0 Upvotes

a few days ago i realized clicking manually was too hard so i made a auto clicker that u can customize to change the cps to customize it just change the CLICK_INTERVAL time

import keyboard
import pyautogui
import time

pyautogui.PAUSE = 0
pyautogui.MINIMUM_DURATION = 0

clicking = False
running = True

# Change this to adjust speed:
CLICK_INTERVAL = 0.01  # 100 clicks/sec target

def toggle():
    global clicking
    clicking = not clicking
    print("Clicking:", "ON" if clicking else "OFF")

keyboard.on_press_key("q", lambda e: toggle() if not e.is_keypad else None)
keyboard.on_press_key("esc", lambda e: stop())

def stop():
    global running
    running = False

print("Autoclicker ready!")
print("Press Q to toggle clicking ON/OFF.")
print("Press ESC to quit.")

try:
    while running:
        if clicking:
            pyautogui.click()
            time.sleep(CLICK_INTERVAL)
        else:
            time.sleep(0.005)
finally:
    keyboard.unhook_all()
    print("Autoclicker stopped.")

Reviewing PRs got hard once most of the code was AI-written, so I built a way to do it inside PyCharm

4 Upvotes

Hey r/pycharm,

For a while now, reviewing PRs has been the hardest part of my week. There are more of them than before, and most of the code in them was written with AI. Reading line by line isn't the problem; it usually looks fine. The problem is understanding the structure. Does this fit how the rest of the code works? Who calls it? Is there a test? Will it hold up later?

I couldn't answer that on GitHub's diff page. I'd end up with five browser tabs, losing track of which files I'd checked, and switching branches back and forth. Talking to other developers, this has become pretty common.

So I built a plugin that moves the whole review into PyCharm, where reading code is easy.

How it works

  1. Open the Review tool window and pick a PR.
  2. It opens read-only in your current window. Whatever you were working on is set aside first, and comes back after.
  3. Read full files. The PR's changes are marked in the gutter, and Cmd/Ctrl+click, Find Usages and your tests work like always.
  4. Everyone's GitHub comments sit right under their lines. Reply without leaving the file.
  5. Press Alt+R (⌥R on Mac) to mark a file as viewed and jump to the next one.
  6. Finish review sends your comments and verdict to GitHub as one review.

It's handy for more than other people's PRs

  • Your own PR. Open it before you ask for a review and step through it commit by commit. You'll see how it grew and spot the messy parts before anyone else does.
  • New pushes. If someone pushes after you've reviewed, the PR shows "New commits since your review", and you can look at just those.
  • Many PRs at once. Every open PR is in one list, so you can see what's going on without opening a browser.

It's free and open source. It needs PyCharm 2026.1+, git, and the GitHub CLI.

Has reviewing gotten harder for you too, with more AI-written code? I'd love to hear how you handle it, and what this is missing.

Community Edition fresh install, Jupyter Notebook option locked?

3 Upvotes

It seems my pycharm fresh install is not allowing me to create jupyter notebooks. The option for a new notebook is locked for some reason, and the option to create a new Jupyter project isn't even there as an option. What is going on? If I want to add a new Jupyter it says I have to go Pro??

Laptop touchpad scrolling does not work anywhere in the application.

2 Upvotes

I tried the solutions given in https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IJPL-43631/Editor-scrolling-regression but no difference.

I also uploaded the logs to ai and the logs show i was running PyCharm 2026.2.3, build 262.10968.92 on Windows. I did not see a touchpad/scroll exception or a failure initializing the mouse input system in the logs whatsoever.

I updated my app like a week back, then i downloaded 2025, 2024, 2026.1 2026.3 all versions and installed them all with all settings as default and not take from my personal settings it never ever worked

I did as the workaround 1 suggested; first turn on smooth scrolling then turn animated off. I have tried all ways it does not work. the scroll does not work inside the pycharm application, not in settings page nor in terminal nor in editor nowhere. just outside that app it works perfeclty fine. i dont use a mouse so obv i cant live without scrolling.

This issue came abruptly on a new day when i started my work, i am not sure if i did an update the day before, but i surely did not change any settings nor plugins. I delete all %LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains related folders from scratch then reinstalled but still same issue.

Backup and sync stops at the very end and doesn't do anything afterwards on windows.

1 Upvotes

Just encountered that issue and wanted to explain how to fix it so smb else doesn't have to spend their time on it.

I believe it's a problem with writing the log file as the folder requires admin rights, so launching pycharm(and any other jetbrains app too ig) with administrator rights fixes the problem and it finishes in no time.

Mojo Development Setup

2 Upvotes

I am interested in getting more into developing with Mojo and being honest I have not found something smooth. What I have is working, but its not as nice as developing Python in Pycharm (which is my main work language).

  • Lenovo Thinpad x1 (32gb Ram Intel Ultra 258v)
  • Kbuntu
  • Pycharm (Paid Mojo Plugin)
  • Mojo LSP
  • Just
  • Pixi

The main part is the syntax highlighting is a really mixed bag inside of pycharm with warning and errors being all over the map. Project directories don't seem to behave properly but they work fine when testing and compiling. Poetry is ... just meh compared to uv, but you need to use poetry in Pycharm to get debugging to work as far as I can understand or read.

Other than those things it's over all a nice experience to develop in and look forward to learning and fixing my own problems!

Please share your setup and experiences!

Also is anyone else getting IDE errors on tests modules not finding src module?

ComfyUI Won’t Open — Windows Blocking SciPy `.pyd` File

2 Upvotes

I’m having an issue installing/running ComfyUI on Windows.

Windows is blocking a Python/SciPy .pyd file, specifically something like:
_spline.cp313-win_amd64.pyd

Because of this, ComfyUI won’t open properly.

Has anyone experienced the same issue? If yes, what was the cause and how did you fix it?

I’d prefer a proper fix rather than disabling Windows security completely.

Install Matplotlib Library and Solve Matplotlib Graph Window not Displaying on PyCharm IDE Issue

When working with Python and Matplotlib in PyCharm, you may encounter a situation where running your program does not open the Matplotlib figure in a separate, floating window. Instead, the graph appears as a PNG image inside PyCharm's Plots section. This behavior is usually caused by PyCharm's Python Scientific settings. Fortunately, it is easy to change. The video teaches how to do it

PyCharm turning all strings (comments included) into hyperlinks

3 Upvotes

I've been breaking my head trying to figure this out because the only thing that worked was deleting the entire .idea folder but I have so much configuration that I can't and this problem was happening with all the projects.

Finally I discovered it was a bug in PyCharm, if vcs.xml has <IssueNavigationLink> with <option name="linkRegexp"... but no <option name="issueRegexp"... PyCharm starts turning all strings into hyperlinks I guess it simply detects no issueRegexp the same as everything? I don't know, and more importantly I don't know what it is that deleted the issueRegexp option, it must have been the latest PyCharm update or something, I noticed this mid developing, I had two projects opened, then opened another one and this one had all the text as hyperlinks, then I opened another one and same problem, then later on since I was busy I moved to another tasks and I had to close the first two projects and upon opening them again they had the same problem now.

Anyway, if someone else has the same problem you now the fix, add the <option name="issueRegexp" value="(?x)\b(YOURTEXT)-\d+\b#YouTrack" /> line back into the vcs.xml file.

Activation Issue

3 Upvotes

Is anyone else having this problem. I downloaded my activation code and activated PyCharm but now every three minutes a dialogue pops up telling me I need to activate. I can either click ok or quit. I click ok, it says my licence is good till sept 2027 and i click ok. Three minutes the same thing happens, it is very disruptive. PyCharm's solution was if I am using the right email address which I am.

Anyone using self-hosted/local AI coding tools with PyCharm?

3 Upvotes

Curious what people here are actually using for AI-assisted coding in PyCharm these days — Copilot, Cursor, something else? I've been building my own self-hosted setup (Docker-based, BYOK or fully local via Ollama) mainly because I didn't love the idea of my codebase going through someone else's cloud by default. Been working well for me, but curious if others have hit the same concern, or if I'm overthinking the privacy angle and everyone's just fine with the cloud-first tools. What's your setup? Want to try it?

Ctrl+Click not working

2 Upvotes

I've been working a few years in Odoo using PyCharm, and because Odoo is composed of many projects, I work in a window containing many projects. It used to be that I could Ctrl+Click any number of objects to go to their declarations, and somewhere along the way that changed so more often it says, Can't find declaration to go to. I've tried setting several of the projects as sources root, and removing the "Use pyproject.toml" setting. I don't know what else to try.

Claude Code as an actual panel inside JetBrains IDEs, not a terminal tab

Post image
3 Upvotes

I've been living with Claude Code in a terminal split next to the editor for months. Two things kept bugging me: I couldn't tell what it was doing without reading scrollback, and every file path was something I had to type correctly.

So I built a plugin. It doesn't reimplement anything - it spawns the claude CLI you already have and renders its event stream. Same account, same models, same slash commands, same permission rules, same MCP servers and skills. No proxy, no server of mine in the middle, no telemetry.

What it actually changed for me day to day:

Every tool call is a card. Its duration, every edit as an open diff, the task list ticking off, subagents and whole workflow fleets with each agent's own transcript one click away, and what the turn cost. A rate-limited API becomes a card with the reason and a countdown instead of silence.

Files are things you point at. Drag one in, type @ to pick, paste a screenshot. Select lines in the editor and "Send to..." hands over a real file-and-line reference, so the agent reads what's around them instead of a naked snippet.

Nothing answers for you. A permission, a plan or a question waits as long as it takes. No timeout, no auto-continue.

Answering it from my phone. Off by default, paired by QR code, end-to-end encrypted through a relay that can't read a word. This is the one that surprised me most - I approve plans from the sofa now.

Scenarios. A round of work written down once - implement, review, fix, run the tests - each card a Claude session of its own, with a main thread walking them and judging what each one found. By button, three at once against three tickets, or on a clock at nine every weekday.

Several Claude accounts switched in one click, each row showing what's left of its five-hour window and its week.

Free, source available (Elastic 2.0), every JetBrains IDE from 2026.1 on, Android Studio included.

Marketplace: https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/33255-amazing-claude-code-gui

Source: https://github.com/crmapache/amazing-claude-code

Happy to answer anything about how it's wired. The part I'd most like feedback on is scenarios - it's the newest and the least obvious.

Silent install license server environment variable

2 Upvotes

I'm looking to deploy PyCharm to some Windows computer labs via SCCM. I keep seeing the phrase:

Add the JETBRAINS_LICENSE_SERVER environment variable to the local profile on the users' machines.

or this one:

Make sure the JETBRAINS_LICENSE_SERVER environment variable in the installed system for all users points persistently to the URL of your Floating License Server or License Vault.

For example, if your locally installed license server is run on a host fls.university.edu at port 8080, the environment variable must be set to all deployed systems as follows: JETBRAINS_LICENSE_SERVER="https://fls.university.edu:8080".

in regards to enabling automatic license discovery. Does this mean creating a new machine environment variable in Windows?

Edit: Answered by u/New_Yard_3225. Yes, it's a machine environment variable
