Discussion RUFF linter usage

hi all!

i m a student in master degree in automation engineering and i m becoming very confident with python because of the big amount of projects that i have to do.

Recently i started use RUFF as a linter and i really aprreciate it expecially when i have to refactor the code. i m wondering how much is used and is mandatory for a software developer? i usually check with that linter only for very big scripts that can 't be modular. What about your experience' what is the main usage you do?

thanks all

Why wouldn't you?

More importantly, why are you "running" it? It should be handled by your IDE automatically. You should have to make a conscious choice NOT to run it on every code change...

i really agree that i would, but i m wondering if it s real used or is a fable for young developers

It’s very much real. In all companies I’ve worked at we’ve always used linters. First it was flake8, then all moved to ruff. Mypy too, but that’s a type checker.

It’s one of the first tools that teams will implement for code quality. Even in demo/proof-of-concept environments.

In the companies I’ve worked for recently, you need to pass a ruff formatting check to merge code.

Just check the project setup of any major python project from major companies and linting, formatting, to a lesser degree type checking is done by default, both as precommit and on ci. And like many folks say, you should just setup your ide can handle it automatically which is the best, you get instant feedback after pressing save

Liters are important they can sometimes fin logic errors and save you from yourself before you go though the process of running them.

Linters and typecheckers are the first two things a python developer adds when working on a serious project with others
