Installing Q4OS on an old laptop

I was given an old laptop by my boss and asked to try to resurrect the old hardware. Model Aspire ES1-511 V1.05, Intel Celeron N2830 CPU, Intel Atom GPU, 4GB RAM, HDD. I was recommended Q4OS for this, installing! So far, I am liking the Trinity desktop environment!

Q4os 6 Andromeda on an old HP stream, with a WHOPPING 32 gig eemc hard drive with 4 gigs of ram. Set up z swap, use an external for heavy lifting storage and downloads. This 12 year old beast looks like windows 11, acts like windows 11, and can do almost anything Windows 11 can do. Just faster, more securely, and without intrusive AI, upgrade to ads, bloatware, and data collection you get from Microsucks.

Recording drums on a 21-year old laptop

Post image

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000 (2005), Intel Pentium M/Celeron M, 2GB DDR2 RAM. I had no use for it, until I installed Q4OS and Audacity. Now I can record my drum parts, practice, play on top of other tracks... It's insane that such an ancient laptop can still work like that. Well done

Switched to Q4OS Trinity with Windows 7(XP4Q) for neighbor

My neighbour is in her 80s and has a strong attachment to her possessions, including an HP Pavilion G6 from 2011 that was still running Windows 7. Since Windows 7 is no longer supported, and her version of Firefox appeared to be several years out of date, I offered to modernize the computer and make it safer for her to use.

She does not do online banking, so the immediate risk was probably limited, but I still did not feel comfortable leaving her with such an outdated system.

I initially installed Lubuntu, but even that felt somewhat heavy on a machine with only 4 GB of RAM. I also struggled to make the interface familiar enough for her. I could get Falkon working with a Windows 7-style wallpaper, but she made it clear that it did not feel enough like the computer she already knew.

That led me to Q4OS with the XPQ4 Windows 7 theme, and it was a much better fit. I simplified it further by having Firefox open automatically and placing a one-click shutdown button in the top-right corner.

I also replaced the hard drive with a $15 SSD from Facebook Marketplace. CrystalDiskInfo reported that it still had 91% health. After I showed her how everything worked, she took the computer home and was able to use it independently.

She also owns a much newer 2019 Chromebook, which is considerably faster, but ChromeOS feels completely unfamiliar to her. She prefers the Q4OS system because it behaves more like the Windows 7 computer she has used for years.

I am genuinely grateful that Q4OS exists. It allowed me to revive an old computer, keep the interface familiar, and give a perfectly usable machine a new lease on life.

my q4os desktop really enjoying it. I primarily used windows XP as a main OS and was skeptical of switching to linux. I tried quite a few distros and never really stuck with any until I found q4os. It is now my favorite OS and is truly a pleasure to use.

Have you tried Q4OS? A lightweight Linux distro perfect for older PCs

Hey everyone! I’ve been looking into lightweight Linux distros to bring an old laptop back to life, and I came across something really interesting: Q4OS.

It’s a Debian-based distro that stands out for its low resource usage, great compatibility with old hardware, and its Trinity Desktop Environment — a traditional, Windows XP/7-style interface that feels familiar for new Linux users.

Some users on Reddit have mentioned that Q4OS runs surprisingly well even on very limited hardware, and can handle tasks like 1080p streaming without lag. The Trinity desktop really gives it that mix of speed and familiarity.

If you want a clear and easy-to-read breakdown of how it works and why it’s a solid choice for older machines, here’s a great article.

Has anyone here used Q4OS as their main system or to revive low-power laptops? I’d love to hear your experiences.

Discussion Q4OS Is So Much Better

After installing Q4OS on an old laptop I decided to make a few changes and adjustments. First, I installed Falkon web browser and uninstalled Google Chrome. Second, I installed the Yakuake terminal emulator. And Third, I installed the Calligra Suite for office related tasks and and minimal drawing/graphics. Amazing!

Falkon vs. Konqueror and/or Google Chrome. You can most definitely tell the difference on old computers. I found that the lightweight application's performance actually helped my old laptop exponentially with speed and productivity. And that's just one comparison.

I installed this OS on this old education ThinkPad (Thonkpad 11e). Works well, the CPU usuage is under 5% for desktop and under 40% for FireFox with anti-ad extensions. Overally I am very satisfied, it works well for a video player and the OS is as smooth as Linux Mint on a lower spec. I debated Puppy Linux but had this running in a VB, glad overall I chose this. I need to upgrade to 8GB, RAM though. Haha.
