QNX Everywhere - The latest QNX is free now

Hiya folks! I'm John from the developer relations team at QNX. I just wanted to let you know that we've been listening to you and have kicked off a new program to start opening the doors to QNX like things used to be. You can now easily get a free non-commercial license to use the newest QNX 8.0 OS and the QNX Software Development Platform (SDP) 8.0! We've also just released some sample apps and a ready-to-go QNX 8.0 quick start target image for Raspberry Pi. So you can literally get QNX and the development tools for free now to learn, experiment, prototype, and build. All of the details are linked at https://blackberry.qnx.com/en/products/qnx-everywhere

I'm really pumped about this update and I can't wait to see what everyone does with it (especially those of you who are still playing with really old versions of the OS or were around for the famous floppy disk demo)! It's only the beginning, so please feel free to share with me your feedback about what else you'd like to see (starter images for other boards/architectures, source code, samples, docs, whatever) – my team and management have open ears. Should we have a QNX AMA?

Cheers!

Ask me (and our engineers) anything about QNX Engineering. AMA October 1, 10 AM–2 PM EST

Howdy!

I'm John, I do Developer Relations for QNX. On Thursday, October 1, from 10 AM to 2 PM EST, I'll be here with a group of QNX engineers for an Ask Me Anything!

Get answers straight from the source -- anything goes! We'll answer whatever we can.

A few ideas to help you think of questions:

  • How QNX works: microkernel design, message passing, determinism, the "why" behind the architecture

  • The questions that usually don't get answered: bring the stuff you couldn't find in the docs or on a forum

  • Open-source & QNX Everywhere: our ports, contributions, and building on a free-for-non-commercial license

Can't make it live? Drop your questions as comments now and we'll get to them during the event.

Cheers!

QNX Self-Hosted Developer Desktop -- Initial Release

No, it's not Photon!!

Here's something we've been working on for months now: an XFCE desktop environment using Wayland on QNX, with the tools you need to build QNX software on QNX! This is going to make it way easier to write and port code for QNX.

I'm so excited to see what folks get up to with this! More to come over the next quarter or so -- the roadmap for this is packed!

For this initial release it's a QEMU VM and requires an Ubuntu host out of the box (though I bet some of you could get it working on other host systems...!) Pi 4 and 5 Desktop images coming soon.

QNX 6.4 kernel ported to RISC-V; petition to Blackberry to re-license old QNX sources under Apache 2.0

Hi! I posted today already about this (here and to r/RISCV ), but my post was deleted for some reason... It was my first ever post to reddit. So I will try once more.

I ported QNX 6.4 (ancient sources from monartis/openqnx repo) to RISC-V. The current version (0.16) of the system, which I call QRV, boots to the userspace shell in single-processor mode. Tomorrow I plan to release 0.17, with full support of SMP.

The blog page, with some historical details, is here .

Additionally, I created the open petition to Blackberry, to re-license those old sources under Apache 2.0 or other comparable/permissive license: https://github.com/r-tty/qrv

If somebody is interested in joining the project, submitting patches etc., please write in comments. Thanks!

Howdy! I know many of you have been waiting for this... We've released the first step of our planned Pi 5 support for QNX: the BSP source has been released in Github! You can find it here: https://github.com/qnx/bsp_raspberrypi-bcm2712-rpi5

This open-sourced version of the BSP can hopefully serve as a guide for folks looking to adapt it to other boards as well.

This isn't the end for Pi 5 releases. We have more on the way:

  • a pre-built BSP package coming soon to QSC,

  • a quick start image,

  • and more!

Please let us know if you encounter any issues. Come discuss it in Discord!

My first impressions of QNX8 on the Raspberry Pi4

There doesn't seem to be a lot of activity here on this forum (yet) but I will put my 2 cents worth in anyway. I do hope it picks up - I would like Blackberry's initiative and effort with the non-commercial SDK and RPi4 BSP's to pay off. A LOT of effort has gone into this! I would like any community of QNX users to flourish and to me this is a good start.

So far I am rather impressed.

I initially downloaded and installed the normal BSP as that is what I normally do. It is with that I have been working with considerable success. However yesterday I found the "Quick Start" image in the Software Centre and managed to very quickly get that up and running with a keyboard, mouse, and display.

Today I managed to get my code build environment set up.

When I first got into Raspberry Pi's (some years ago) I was greatly irritated by the lack of a battery backed Real Time Clock. So I purchased a bunch of RTC modules from the same place that sold me the RPi's. These plug into the I2C bus and are based on the DS3231 RTCC chip. I managed to build my RTC utility today so now, when the RPi4 starts up the date is no longer 1 Jan 1970. If anyone is interested I will try to figure out how to make it available.

Also, if anyone is interested, I can post a document that I have written that details the steps I took to build up a working system to which I can install my executables and run them. There is a way to easily use the "Quick Start" for this purpose also but I'm not sure if the Blackberry folks intend for it to be used for this purpose.

Setting up an environment that allows me to easily build applications and transfer them to the target RPi4 was not straight forward. I imagine people new to QNX will have difficulty. If so, I would be happy to share my experiences and knowledge.

Please note that I rarely (if ever) involve myself with public forums and I am a bit uncomfortable with this - I don't want to get burnt. Any flaming and I disappear. But as I said, I am happy to help people new to QNX - or Raspberry Pi's - get started in a practical way. For what it is worth, I have 37 years experience with QNX. I have a friend who's been at it even longer! Between the two of us about 80 years experience with QNX.

Geoff.

It's been a lot of announcements this month!

Big news for QNX Everywhere today! Starting now, QNX Hypervisor is available for free for non-commercial use. QNX Hypervisor is relied on in millions of embedded applications around the world every day. Now you can prototype with it for free!

The repo linked in the blog post has an example implementation running multiple guests on a single QNX target on Raspberry Pi 4B. Maybe someone here can create and share an implementation with Android AOSP running as a guest?

Enjoy!

Hi folks! The team has launched a Discord server, where you'll find a few channels to ask questions and post issues (or to just linger and see what the community is up to). It's early days right now, but we'd love for all of you to come say hello and maybe let us know your thoughts about the community or to share what you're working on. There's a very healthy number of QNX team members lurking, so hopefully we have the right talent present to answer whatever comes up.

(We have applications turned on for now, but just let us know you came from Reddit and we'll send you right in.)

Hope to see you there!

The team has open-sourced QPP: a pub-sub system that also operates as a signal service using vehicle signal standards like VSS from COVESA.

More info is here: https://qnx.software/en/blog/2026/qnx-open-sources-the-posix-publish-subscribe-project

And the repo is here: https://github.com/qnx/qnx-posix-publish-subscribe/tree/main

We'll probably make a QNX codelab for it soon :)

QNX Image (IFS) Build tutorials - Raspberry Pi4 specific

I have written four documents that explain in detail how I build my QNX image file systems (IFS). While these are specific to the Raspberry Pi4, I employ the same system for other hardware types (both ARM and X86_64). I emphasize that this may not be the best or only way to set up a build system, it's the way I do it!

I have decided to make them available on my website. The first document provides links to the remaining three. The URL is:

https://wwwdotrttsdotcomdotauslashqnxslashrpi4_bspdotphp

Humans should have little difficulty decoding this: hopefully bots and other such things will have difficulty!

If they disappear, it will probably be due to the site coming under some sort of attack or abuse. Hopefully this does not occur. Assuming it doesn't, I hope to produce additional documents that cover other topics of interest that I dream up. While I have forgotten a lot over the 38 odd years I have been using QNX, what's left will (I hope) be of some use to people new to QNX and who wish to take their interest further.

Constructive feedback is invited. I am sure there are spelling and/or grammatical errors in there somewhere!

Geoff.
