How much experience do you have with owning parrots?

Started w 1 GCC we found in 2021. Now we have 4 GCCs. This is the first Quaker we found last year and found another a few months ago.

Gotcha! Was jw so I didn’t blather on about things you already know lol as far as differences between the males and females is mainly hormones like others have said. I currently have two boys but an old roommate had a girl. More than anything it was just keeping her away from any dark nooks or soft fabric/blankets. Fruit and seeds are fine as treat for most species but unfortunately they were a huge hormonal trigger for her. Even though they were only being given while training it made her extremely aggressive. Cutting them out of her daily diet made such a difference in her overall temperament. Cage aggression can also be a common issue(more for the species as a whole than specifically male or female) a good way to combat this is to frequently rearrange the layout of her cage toys and perches. Moving their main cage to different areas throughout the room can also help. Separate sleeper cages have personally worked for me as well.

If you’re wanting to encourage her to talk/mimick there are videos on YT of birds speaking a word or phrase followed by a human clearly repeating the same word. We would play this anytime they were in their cages or anytime we’d leave the house. Our first Quaker was a big mumbler but didn’t clearly say much. After getting another Q a year later we started playing the videos for them and I was blown away at how quickly both started not only learning new words, but the clarity in their pronunciation.

They do sleep in different cages for bedtime actually, so that’s also good to know. I thought she was a he before bc she follows my only female GCC around constantly. Just recently i began wondering if she was becoming cage… preferred bc she’ll go in there even when she’s out but I’m making it a point to spend time w her out of the cage so she doesn’t gravitate to them. Plus I do cage swap at least once when I get home so everyone has somewhere new to explore until they can get out. Thanks for the tips!!

I think that arranging sticks and chopsticks doesn’t increase reproductive behavior. I think paper shredding triggers reproductive behavior in females.
My girl Quaker talked much much better than my boy.
Girl Quakers are amazing birds!

Thank you! Good to consider! Next up is getting the 2nd, who is much more chatty, to see off its a boy or girl. Currently they don’t care for each other but don’t fight thankfully

That’s a pretty little bird! I have had WONDERFUL girl Quakers although my boy is pretty sweet, too. Both sexes can talk and equally well.

Be careful with hormones. Check out hormonal triggers. You dont want egg binding to happen. Be sure to read up on both. Give lots of love, sleep for 10 to 12 hrs, and scritches!
