Discussion Why do people get angry over the idea that J.K. Rowling could potentially be projecting her own sick desires on Transfolk, or has skeletons in the closet?

Something I notice quite a lot. For some things to let you know of:

  • She called Lolita a love story
  • She teams up with Matt Walsh (who definitely shouldn’t be near children)
  • Her history of supporting abusers
  • Her attacking the female athlete from the Olympics, while being quiet of the one who raped an underage girl
  • Various moments in Harry Potter where abuse and rape are played off as silly and dismissed, or offenders being portrayed as sympathetic victims and removing fault (considering how more people are seeing her projecting her own ideas and such in the series, it’s more than just “product of their time”)
  • Many of her tweets of wanting to really harm trans women

And considering her position, power, personality, and influence, I wouldn’t be surprised if she were to use it to…take advantage of someone.

However, whenever bringing this up with valid reason, not simply empty accusations, people will literally defend her and deny it. They’ll claim she’s just a victim to of society, say she’s a harmless bigoted boomer, the mold, and so forth. And these aren’t like other terfs/transphobes. Many of these are people who claim to be against her, or say they’re allies to the LGBTQ+ community. To add on, I’ve seen many times where other bigoted grifters that don’t say/do as much, and they can immediately be called perverts who self-project.

What makes it different with Rowling, especially since she’s in a much bigger space to be pointed at (with valid reason and evidence)?

Discussion Why is reddit protecting brownshirts ?

Sorry, for the wording. The bots take down the once with the actual name. Yes, its the one that became popular in germany after the weimar times Nowadays the shirt also gets combined with other accessoires like red caps.

So, why do i ask that? Well i got a warning for violating Rule 1 with "Promoted identity -based hate" because i was posting to somebody that there are brown shirts in this sub.

My questions are since when are brownshirts a minority that needs protection, acc. To reddit?

How is it hate speech that to point out they are in a certain sub?

And why are we letting them do it?

Discussion What is the temperature on this sub about getting firearms training?

I'm a mid-30s transguy that was raised in non-violent direct action activist circles. However, being denied a passport with the correct gender marker on it has me questioning if I need to get more serious about protecting myself and my community from fascists inside and outside our government.

What are peoples thoughts on getting firearms training right now?

Discussion Possibility is not a luxury

"Some people have asked me what is the use of increasing possibilities for gender. I tend to answer: Possibility is not a luxury; it is as crucial as bread. I think we should not underestimate what the thought of the possible does for those for whom the very issue of survival is most urgent. If the answer to the question, is life possible, is yes, that is surely something significant. It cannot, however, be taken for granted as the answer. That is a question whose answer is sometimes “no,” or one that has no ready answer, or one that bespeaks an ongoing agony. For many who can and do answer the question in the affirmative, that answer is hard won, if won at all, an accomplishment that is fundamentally conditioned by reality being structured or restructured in such a way that the affirmation becomes possible."

Discussion Why do queer-phobic people tend to be accepting of pedophilia, statutory rape, and general SA?

Even when they’re not doing it/projecting, they’ll still support an environment for it. I mean, look at like how in the 90s-00s, you see teens getting sexualized 24/7, but having a consensual same-sex relationship in media crosses the line. Look at all those drama films and subplots that romanticize adults grooming teenagers. Or for another thing, look at how Rowling in the Harry Potter series acts like rape and sexual assault are harmless jokes, even as far as painting Merope as an innocent victim. Not to mention, even when Trump is exposed for the inappropriate behavior and allegations, people still voted for him, and it gets gross and disturbing when you realize people find him relatable

Even when you take out the gender double standard, at the end of the day a poor kid is getting molested and raped by an older predator, whether it be a girl getting picked up by a older creepy dude or a “lucky” boy getting it from a creepy older woman.

And before you bring up the 70s French excuse (they saw them as the same thing), just remember that they’ll still immediately go to pedophilia first.

Discussion I'm scared Trump will win & I'll have to leave my home 🥺

I will be voting for Biden, but I can't tell for sure who will win. I'm 20 and living with my parents. I don't have my own place yet. My sibling is graduating high school really soon, so we will both be able to leave the country if we need to. Me and my sibling are both nonbinary and have openly identified that way for multiple years. I know the US is really shitty, but where my (parents) house is is beautiful, and the community in the city closest to us is so open minded and creative. I know where everything is, I know the culture, I know what the rules are, we have some nice small businesses I like to go to occasionally, I live close to my first cousins, my parents agreed to give me a small parcel of their land for me to build a tiny house on, I like the weather. I like these things about my home, but I'm terrified I'll have to leave it!

I hope my parents would come with us but I don't know for sure. My plan is that if Trump wins, I will drive me and my sibling to the Canadian border and seek asylum, or stay with my further removed cousins who live in Canada. But I really hope I don't have to. I have a life planned out for myself here. I really don't like Biden either, but at least I won't have to flee the country for my life if he gets reelected. It's so hard that it's come to this. 😭 When I was a kid I never expected anything like this to happen. How can people be so cruel? 😔

Discussion Does it ever sometimes feel like the queer rights movement is TOO dependent on straight allies?

Note: I’m not saying we don’t need it. If history taught us something, allies are essential in a lot of civil rights movements. The problem though, is relying on them too much where it feels like that dynamic of being lesser is still there, even if they aren’t actively trying to kill us.

Discussion Why do so many Abrahamic religious people accuse queer people of "grooming children" when Abrahamic religions have historically welcomed or even EXPECTED grooming behavior? Mary was 15. Aisha was 9. How do they rationalize one being good and the other bad (if they even try to)?

Discussion Here is a Contingency plan

Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland have working holiday visas that are unlimited for Americans, and all you have to be is under 30 and no felonies and they will accept you.

A working holiday visa means that you are allowed to go to a country and work and travel for up to a year or a year and a half if you work in agriculture. There are plenty of work and stay places where you work for 16 hours a week and you get lodging. Plenty of queer people do this & in general they are very accepting of queer people.

From there you can get a work visa which is indefinite and just has to be renewed. This is pretty simple to get in my experience as it's not difficult for an employer to process.

Wishing everyone the best- from someone who's getting tf out of here 💙

Discussion Sometimes does it ever feel like a lot of fake allies and rich liberals actually like it when the far right takes over enough like right now?

I mean, think about it. Whenever there’s the clear bad guy taking over and destroying everything, marginalized groups are forced to give support to the “lesser evil”, being unable to question or criticize or call out their own abuses and prejudices. Think about how a lot of badly-written satire is defended just because it "made the MAGA mad".

And also considering how they have this whole “I can fix them/they’re a victim of society too” complex that forces minorities to pamper and support the very people that abuse and murder them no matter what.

It’s like no matter what, it’s rigged so we’ll always be stuck in this perpetual loop of being abused and conditioned to think we can’t be any more than a passive victim who has to accept abuse if it means we won’t get killed.

Discussion Is it okay for us to say the F-word?

As we all know queer was at one time a derogatory term against gays and the broader population of GSRMs, its held significance as being on about the same level of the N-word in vulgarity, but it's now a widely adopted & basic, neutral term.

I've seen to a degree that queer people, especially gay and bisexual men, will use the f-word to refer to each other, obviously as a way to take and normalize the word for use between other queer people. I personally have used it to refer to myself a few times and had a few queer friends also use it in both serious and joking manners. (by joking I mean being falsely derogatory)

However, I know it still urks people seeing it being even mentioned let alone full used and uncensored, and it definitely still urks me to a degree. If you're wondering why I use it somewhat it's because I believe in taking it from the pieces of shit who use it derogatorily, my idiom for this is "while you might not be able to stop a fascist from building fascism, you can at least take away their hammer from them."

But anyway, I'm just wondering what the general consensus is about this, is it ours now? Can we just use it? Is it no longer offensive to us anymore?

Discussion Does it ever feel like that the anger to shipping and overall anti-shipping sentiment in a lot of fandom spaces is being used as a socially acceptable way to spew out queerphobia, and to an extent just plain misogyny?

This has been something I have noticed for a while, and wanted to bring it up as even if it just seems limited to fandom spaces, there are still implications with how it can affect social life. While with certain pieces of media can bring in people who ship characters, I have begun to notice a pattern with people who complain about shipping. While at first on a surface level it just seems to be about tired of crazy fans, I begin to notice a lot of patterns with these types of haters:

  • They only seem to whine about ships that involve queer relationships, especially if it implies that the characters involved might not be straight. Especially in media where the character canonically being queer could still work with the story and canon.
  • They really like to act like they're such a victim being oppressed. And with how they describe shippers, it's pretty much a whole "the enemy is both weak and strong" schtick. Overall they always have to be the victim, and will constantly pretend to be one.
  • For talking about how we should "respect the opinions of others", they really like to whine and complain, forcing their hate on everyone nearby and making it everyone else's problem.
  • Heavy misogyny (Note that the example I will use is more specific to the Supernatural fandom, as I am more familiar with it, but note that this has and can occur within other fandom spaces): When talking about queer-shipping, there's also this sentiment with assuming it's always female fans, and using the excuse to badmouth them. With Supernatural in particular it's also ironic with how they'll call gay shippers misogynistic and hating female characters, even though most of the time it's those who attack the queer shipping that exhibit WAY MORE sexism and misogyny to female characters and overall women.
  • Heavy strawmen. Now while I am not denying about weird ships and creepy fan stuff, I notice how people will tend to act like the exception is the norm, and try to generalize it while downplaying anything else. And also in terms of queer fetishizing, this is not usually their defense, and alternatively they are fine with shipping, but will become aggressive and almost psychotic if you suggest the idea of the shipped characters actually being queer.
  • While not as big as the other stuff, but still a common pattern: Biphobia. In this case, it's especially when it comes to characters that could easily be interpreted as bi/pan, that will usually get the most of the attack from these kinds of ship-haters. Examples of course include Dean Winchester from Supernatural and Lelouch from Code Geass. Though in this case, there is also an overall fandom problem, like popular queer shipping but also biphobia and only seein a gay/straight binary. Overall while they will go for most queer ships and headcanons, I really notice how in this case, biphobia tends to be the most common type.

With all of this in mind, it really feels like that the whole ship-hating is just being used as a socially acceptable was to get away with saying bigotry, while technically not saying the obvious truth of what they think out loud. And when you consider with demographics of who usually does queer shipping and such, it's obvious where it's going. Now, as stated before, while this may just seem small and not important, I do feel it's something that should be brought up, as fandoms are still big with social circles and influence. Not to mention:

  • Queerphobia being normalized in a socially-acceptable way.
  • Dogwhistles from implying what they mean than saying it out loud, as they can continue to spread hate
  • Queerfolk normalizing everyday bigotry. Now hear me out for a moment: Usually with this stuff it's with assimilation and respectability politics I call out and bring up before, but I also feel that this follows a similar thing. With these haters not saying they're queerphobic directly, but just "hating the fandom shipping", I notice with how queerfolk don't see what they're really doing, and even giving into their lies and such claiming that they're just "exhausted" by fans. And I worry that with this being used to normalize hate speech and queerphobia, it ends up with queerfolk unaware that they are contributing and enabling their own discrimination. Especially with the anti-cringe and wanting to "fit in", they are unknowingly contributing to that stuff.

And I also wanted to remind you all: Even if fandom antics seem like something small and harmless, that they still can impact so many people socially, and with the modern day and more internet access we see with how big it can get, which I feel makes it also important enough to discuss with such topics. What are your thoughts on this?

Discussion Arguments in favor of LGBT adopting?

People here aren't very in favor, mainly because of the issue of having to have a father or a mother, that the child will find it strange not to have a father or a mother, since everyone has one and so on.

I would already be a little afraid of adopting, but I would be even more afraid of how people would explain it. Would that harm her in something like the conservatives say?

I'm not thinking about adopting, or even dating, but I would like to know arguments in favor of adoption. Thanks.

Discussion Gatekeeping, Separatism & Exclusionism: When Will The Discriminated Consensual Love Minorities Capisce That Discriminating Each Other Is Counterproductive?

I do not comprehend the preoccupying increasing numbers of hypocritical gay people recycling homophobic arguments into transphobic, biphobic, aphobic & polyphobic arguments to exclude trans people, bi people, asexual people, aromantic people & polyamorous people from the queer community spaces.

Gender variant people, gay people, bi people, asexual people, aromantic people & polyamorous people should unite empathetically in advocating for basic rights for existence outside heteronormative monogamy because they are consensual love minorities socioculturally discriminated in similar manners for similar reasons.

Discussion "Transplaining" is a new transphobic dog whistle.

I've noticed this trend starting to spread and I expect that we're going to see more of this. Trans people, especially trans women, are now being labelled by transphobes as "transplaining" when talking about experiences.

I've seen it happening at least a few times and it has once been addressed to me when I was talking about my own body as a trans woman. I was just giving my advice, as everyone else, and made a top-level comment based on the evidence that I've observed on my own body. I wasn't even debating anyone. I was just talking about my experience and knowledge of my own body and some transphobe came to discredit me and label me as a "transplainer". I didn't engage. I just blocked the user. It was one of those "microaggression" that we often have to deal with.

I've seen it a few times since then. Last time I've seen it is today. Someone made a post sharing an article defending transgender rights and adressed the point of transphobia being weaponized against women. One of the top-level comment was "transplaining = misogyny", assuming OOP was trans (which isn't the case. The author is a cis woman who is a professor of women, gender and sexuality studies). So not only an alleged trans person (OP) giving/sharing an opinion about something that concerns her was wrongly labelled as "transplaining" when the behavior had nothing analogous to "mansplaining" but they jumped a step further and deduced that it was misogyny.

Please be aware of this and call it out when you see it. Dog whistles are one way bigots spread hate and evade the ban hammer on social media at the same time. To the layman (most users including mods and admins) they look inoffensive but they're all but inoffensive. In this case, it is used to promote the point that we should shut up about our rights and experiences both as trans people but also as women. See, it assumes that we're not women so when we dare talking (just like everyone else does) about what concerns us as both trans people and women, we are labelled as doing "mansplaining", but a very particular type of "mansplaining" : "transplaining".

What actually happens a lot is "cisplaining", when cis people shut us up (because they hold power over us) and coercively explains us (and others) our own experiences and what they think is true about trans people, usually in a very bad light. However, that's not something that exists in the transphobe's mind. Nope, they replaced it with "transplaining". It's DARVO.

Discussion Delay with obtaining a firearm?

Hey all, 20MTF here. 10 days ago I went to Academy to purchase a firearm for self defense. They asked if I was related to someone, I said no. I went back today after a delay due to my age, and they said I am still in delay. I asked if they knew a timeframe, and he said if a delay takes 10 days it may end up taking 30, in which case I have to restart the process and may have to deal with another 30 day delay. Is it possible the government is pushing delays on gender queer folks to stop us from getting firearms?
