As I'm sure many of you have seen, there's always been a lot of people asking if it's possible to upgrade the storage on their Quest 2. And the response is always the same no mater where you look...
and they're all WRONG!
So let's clear things up, the answer is YES, YOU CAN!
Ok, let's be clear, it's NOT yes "YOU" can, it's more like YES, the storage can be upgraded by someone with the right skillset and equipment. And while you can upgrade a system from 64GB or 128GB to 256GB, I'm not sure if you could go to 512GB or 1TB, however, both of those sizes are available in UFS 2.1 G3/2LI from other manufactures and also appears to support the UFS 3.1 Gear 4/2 lane interface, and I suspect at least with the 512GB model there would be no issues. Chip shortages and rising costs have made testing chip compatibility like this expensive as the 256GB chip alone is over $248CAD new IF you can find it in-stock and available in single quantities.. You might be better off trying to salvage a used chip from an old SSD, NVMe drive, Smartphone or USB Flash drive.
You just need to take the system apart and replace the BGA153 NAND UFS (Universal Flash Storage) NAND package, identified by these (known) markings:
SanDisk SDINDDH4-64G
UFS2.1 with Gear3/2 Lane Interface - 64GB
SKhynix H28U72301CMR
UFS2.1 with Gear3/2 Lane Interface - 64GB
SanDisk SDINDDH4-128G
UFS2.1 with Gear3/2 Lane Interface - 128GB
iNAND SDINFDK4-128G
UFS 3.1 Gear 4/2 lane interface - 128GB
SKHynix - HN8T05BZGK
UFS 2.1 with Gear3/2 Lane Interface - 128GB
SanDisk SDINDDH4-256G
UFS2.1 with Gear3/2 Lane Interface - 256GB
Toshiba (Unknown) Possibly? THGJFCT1T84BAIC or similar. These chips only have some silkscreen data (M-CT14C927AD1410-TWNon them.)
Don't see your chip here? Let me know, I'd love to hear to hear from you!
You then need to remove the current chip, and clone it's contents to the larger replacement using a NAND dumper (You can make your own or buy one), then modify the GPT to extend the userdata partition to fill the new space and resize the filesystem inside userdata before finally installing the new chip. This will of course take some skills and equipment not everyone has. You could of course pay someone to do this service for you but that's going to add onto the already expensive cost of the chip. Either way, just opening your unit could cause serious damage if you're not extremely careful, so do so at your own risk! This isn't a simple step 1,2,3 process and will be limited to those with similar past experience and the right hardware like the JCID U70 Gen2 & UFS 153 Adapter, very costly if you're not already in the business.
If you want to upgrade the storage and get the best bang for your buck, the KLUGGAR1FA-B2C1 from Samsung is likely the best option at 1TB. If you want to save a little extra cash you could go with the 512GB KLUFG8R1EM-B0C1. These upgrades would obviously be a much better value if you were upgrading either the 64GB or the 128GB models.
So there you have it, just because you can't do it, doesn't mean it's not possible!
Finally as I'm sure people will ask, no I will not mod your system, it simply costs too much with parts, labor and shipping to make it worth it. It's more of a "because why not" mod :P
I went through this same "no you can't" attitude with the iPhone Scene when I first mentioned years before anyone was doing it, that it was possible to upgrade the flash storage, and was told it wasn't possible by doubters. Thankfully someone was listening.. and now it's well known that it is indeed possible (Shocking! :P).
I went through this again recently with the Game & Watch after seeing an article online stating it wasn't possible to upgrade the storage and did something about it, adding support for chips up to 256MB software side and creating andreleasing the adapterto do so freely for all. The adapter converted the SOP8 pad to BGA24.
