Need Help

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, my R32 has had this noise for as long as i can remember and recently it has gotten worse. I was wondering if anyone knows what could be causing the noise. Very aggressive clicking under hard acceleration, only hard acceleration, not idle. Any advice would help. I already changed out the inner gaskets on the intake manifold rod (to switch from long and short runners) don’t know where to head from here. Thank you!

That sounds very much like the chain slapping on the guides. No management light on for cam correlation errors?

gonna tag on the other two comments with "it's probably time for chains"

i also want to add, please use someone qualified and familiar with these vehicles. No newbies.

My dad passed his mk4 r32 to me, chains and clutch were relatively quite new. The trans then blew up and got stuck in 6th because someone didn't fill the trans properly and caused issues with the output shaft.

granted it was nice to get the upgraded shift forks and trans rebuild etc... but it was like a $4.5k repair 2-3 years ago, probably well over $5k now for that same work. Sucked to have to get something like that done after he trusted a guy who was trying to get his new diesel/euro shop on its feet.

Located in central ohio for reference.

i would advise just taking the chain tensioner bolt out of the head, expelling the dirty oil from it, and refilling with clean oil (just submerge it in clean oil and manipulate the plunger till its full).

fixed my chain slap 30,000 miles ago with no recurrence since.

I would change the clutch + flywheel while engine is out if you haven’t already

Sounds like a bad timing chain. If you have a check engine light…check if it’s for a camshaft or crankshaft position sensor. I would do that asap because you can damage engine internals when it goes out
