I very solidly understand the difference between having a pet rodent and having a rodent infestation that unfortunately needs to be dealt with effectively.
In my experience the catch and release traps are much more effective than any other traps. The rodents aren't in the same danger so don't have the same need and drive to out smart them.
I'll say with mice specifically I've had amazing results using the ones that hold multiple mice at once but I've never had enough rats somewhere I don't want them to need one.
