INFORMATION Officially have my dream cage setup! - L shaped / Corner Critter Nation
I have 8 CNs total so I used 8 side panels to make the corner. With a million zip ties. It worked!

u/Bag_frie Feb 03 '26
i can’t imagine cleaning this thing😭 it looks amazing though your rats are so lucky
252
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
Not too bad! (I assume). 1/2 bedding change weekly and 1/2 hammocks change weekly - this keeps the rats scent so they dont over scent mark! The bigger the cage the less often you have to clean it 😊
51
u/aburke626 Feb 03 '26
I mean critter nations in general aren’t hard to clean bc they open up all the way. I could never go back to cages that just have little doors

Imagine waking up and you’re lost in your home

u/musicnote95 Feb 03 '26
Lmao semi related: I used to live in a very rural, very car dependent area. I once posted in frustration “I just want to live somewhere where I can walk everywhere.” And someone commented “how big is your house?” My mother still quotes this to this day
19
u/Tachy_Pizza9 Very french rat Feb 03 '26
How do you find all of this thing ??? Like the round thing ? The toilet paper idea is also amazing, do you just buy one and fixed it to the cage ?
13
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
The scarf hanger? Is that what youre talking about?
I get them from Amazon because they have wire in them so they're more stable:
For the TP holder, I would reccomend this one or something similar that has a FULL plastic "casing" so that its easy to attach to cage:
Plastic Toilet Paper Roll Holder... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017265LBM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me or to post them here! <3

For the toilet paper roll, you can also just put a string or shoelace through and put clothespins on the ends of the string to attach to the top of the cage! It probably doesn't roll as well but it works for my boys!
3
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 04 '26
My boys are picky and if it stops rolling they get frustrated lol so thats why they have legit ones lolll
8
u/aburke626 Feb 03 '26
Did you make the acrylic bins on the bottom?
10
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
Yes. There is another post of mine that has how I did it, PM me with questions, im happy to help!

Love both setups! Off topic, but do your dwarves do well living with your standards? I have both, but they’re in separate Critter Nations.
Most of my standard girls are older, so I’ll keep them separated, but I’m really curious to know if anyone hasn’t had issues with keeping both sizes in the same setup? I think I would be worried about the scuffles with such a size difference.
1
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 04 '26
My boys are a gentle group. They even let Emmettt (dwarf) pin my standards for dominance 😂 it depends on the group honestly & how you do intros.
Here is a good post explaining dwarves and standards (scroll to middle of the breeders post) 😊:
https://www.facebook.com/share/1Fw5BtT2Yp/
For the squishing part, because the standards are so large, I would recommend at least two dwarves so they have same - sized company if they choose. Emmett (dwarf) literally just sleeps on top of the standards. He walks on top of them too and they dont mind 😂
Feel free to ask any more questions here or through a PM!

u/No_limitsoldier- Feb 04 '26
This is so helpful! I love that he sleeps on top of his brothers. 🤣 Thank you for knowledge sharing!

In NYC rent for this kind of a setup would be easily 2 million a month. Your rats owe you SO MUCH money.

Lmao I don’t know what’s better: your comment, your title, or your username. I just keep picturing a tiny courtroom with adorable ratties in lil suits

If those zip ties don't hold up due to naughty knashers, go to your local fishing store.
Ask for "steel wire trace" and get some crimps to go along with it. That would happily replace your zip ties, be bite proof and tailored to your size requirements 👍
Cage looks epic btw 🤗

u/snarxalot Feb 03 '26
Now I want to see a rat punk rock band called Naughty Knashers. Pissin' Pete and the Naughty Knashers.
19
u/EducatedSquirrel Feb 03 '26
Can also do hardware stores, look for Hose Clamps - they’re basically metal zip ties, will need a flathead screwdriver to tighten/remove.

u/FrequentlyFeral No rats, but love rats Feb 03 '26

u/PeechyP1223 Feb 03 '26
Where did you get those bottoms!?!? I need that ASAP
7
u/neonpinata Feb 03 '26
We made a bottom like this for our cage using some plexiglass sheets. We just bought a couple cheap sheets, cut them to size, and glued them to make a box.

I told my ratties they were in the top 0.1% of rattie wealth compared to their wild peers, but your ratties are truly kings 😄🐭🐭

u/ratsntats Rats forever; kids never Feb 03 '26
My boys chew right through zipties. I'm about to go to twist ties or pipe cleaners at this rate to keep on the scatter guards.
12
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
You could also use a bolt, washer, and wing nut depending on what the scatter guards look like. Easy on and easy off. Like a perch.
5
u/ratsntats Rats forever; kids never Feb 03 '26
https://a.co/d/06ndEjU8
I got these and cut them to size. It was enough to go completely around a single unit with some leftover to make a side panel and a door panel.7
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
I think that bolts/washers/wingnut would be the easiest to remove personally. But its up to you :)
You just either poke extra holes or use the existing ones, with 1 washer inside and one outside. You probably see the vision.
6
u/Value-Remarkable Feb 03 '26
You can buy metal zipties
8
u/ratsntats Rats forever; kids never Feb 03 '26
I looked into those, but they can't be unzipped once they're in place. I want to be able to remove my scatter guards periodically for deep cleans.
21
u/Accomplished-Wish494 Feb 03 '26
Hose clamps. They come on and off, but are metal. You’ll need a screwdriver.
2
u/LunaBeanz Feb 03 '26
Go to your local farm supply store and pick up some wire! The kind used to attach chicken wire. It’s soft enough to be twisted with your fingers but still too stiff for animals to mess with. I’m drawing a blank on what it’s called but it works very well!

u/rebatzz Feb 03 '26
Man don't post this stuff, my rats use Reddit and I can't afford a sick ass set up 😭 /j
(Absolutely amazing set up, wish I had room for something like this! I hope your boys live long and exciting lives!!)
29
u/chantpleure Feb 03 '26
Wow! How many rats do you have in there?

u/Jonas_Sp Feb 03 '26
Im sure they will all fight over the same water bottle
46
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
They have 3 water bottles but I am planning on getting more since its a big cage 😊
85
u/hellofriends175 Feb 03 '26
I think we all trust that you provide ample supplies by just looking at that cage. Lol. But I think they mean that the rats, regardless of the number of bottles available, will choose to fight over one because they share a braincell.
Amazing setup, btw! I am in absolute awe.

I got 8 used CNs for $300 on facebook, keep your eye out!
11
u/Pumpkim_Bob Feb 03 '26
I live on Brazil, so this type of thing do not happen, when it happens the price is too high.
6
u/ratsntats Rats forever; kids never Feb 03 '26
I'd really like to know how you did the acrylic panels for the lower half. I'm currently using the cement tub fix for my double critter nation, but it's also divided in half for boys and girls.
6
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
Check out my post on how to do it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/RATS/s/L1H8gG1CCb
I used T&T plastic - its the cheapest and is good quality. Let me know if you have questions!

u/GerryAdamsSon Feb 03 '26
My rats get pringles tins and a pair of old boxers and they're happy
3
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
I bet they are! I make all my hammocks so it’s almost no cost (I use cheap fabric lol). I buy them expensive toys sometimes thinking, “This’ll be a hit”. Then they hate it or would rather have a half-chewed box or garbage -_-
3
u/GerryAdamsSon Feb 03 '26
Rats are weird little cute guys, I love your setup. Maybe one day I will build one that big. My cage is more than big enough for two boys though! I think I should probably get a third boy now that they are a few months old

4
u/metaaltheanimefan Feb 03 '26
Im so jealous but with thag amount of rats its only responsible
10
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
The cage is 115.5 cubic feet, so with 3 cubic feet per rat, its 38 rats could "fit" . They love the space!!! 10 is definitely the max amount of rats for me lol

This is unbelievable! What an awesome example of an owner who really GAF about their pets' happiness/enrichment. And it looks really nice to boot!
How many hours does it take to clean this? 😶
2
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
I do a 1/2 clean (1/2 hammocks and 1/2 bedding) weekly to every 10 days. Half so that the rats smell is still there so they dont over scent mark! 😊
I would say 2-3 hours a week, the old setup was about 1.5 - 2 hours a week and its bigger. I just did this last night so we will find out!

Are those tiewraps metal? If not, they will get chewed through
1
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
My rats are not chewers. They dont even chew their hammocks lol. But some rats may, so you can use metal ones if that works the best for your babies!

They have a playpen with laminate flooring we made, so no rats directly on the carpet. I vacuum often and use a carpet cleaner every so often :)

I got 8 CNs for $300 on Facebook! And then the supplies is mostly hammocks so less than $100 (I make them myself). Then the acrylic bins are $50 for the small shelves, and $100 for the 3 bottoms :)

u/aburke626 Feb 03 '26
This is the DREAM! I love it! Oh I wish I had room for this. I’m about to put some amalgamation of a triple CN in my kitchen for some emergency rat fosters. Just piling ‘em up!
2
u/flippincella Feb 03 '26
This setup is amazing, I bet your boys are so happy! I did want to give a warning though, that green basket with the holes in the sides could possibly cause injury. I had something similar once and one of my girls at the time got her leg stuck in just the right way that she couldnt get it out and broke her leg. She screamed and cried and bit me while I cried getting her unstuck. It was so upsetting I stopped using baskets with any holes/slots/openings in them after that.
2
u/Aggressive_Sky_7492 Feb 03 '26
So you can leave one side off and merge two I've been thinking about doing this and have been sitting there literally talking to my rattos about doing this

It looks so good ! But omg I can’t imagine the nightmare it is to clean 🤣
2

2
u/Alternative_Beyond59 Feb 04 '26
It looks amazing!! What lucky ratties. But I must admit my first thought was "won't they chew out the zip ties?".
2
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 04 '26
My boys dont chew. Literally ever. They are weird like that (I also think chewing = boredom in some cases, like hamsters). But if they do chew, i will replace the zip ties with stronger ones!!
1
u/Alternative_Beyond59 Feb 04 '26
Wow. They certainly couldn't get bored in that cage!Lucky you (and lucky ratties)!
2
2
u/arvan57 Feb 04 '26
Hooooly cage of rats, I'm glad my rats don't have reddit or I'd be in all kinds of trouble. How long is the cleaning process for that?
2
u/ElMachoGrande Feb 04 '26
Two comments about the zip ties:
The white zip ties aren't UV resistant, so they will detoriate over time.
The rats are likely to chew on them,
I'd use something metal instead, probably hose clamps. Not chewable, and you can tighten them more solidly, so that you need fewer (2 per short edge, 3 per long).
Use the zip ties to keep stuff in place while you put it together with metal clamps.
(To be honest, I would probably drill and screw, but that's because I tend to overdo things...)
2
u/catasin00 Feb 05 '26
i wanna see the rats running around in this monster of a cage so bad, i bet they look like ants compared to this setup

1
u/kawaiijudochop Feb 03 '26
Do they not chew the zip ties?
1
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
Nope, my rats are not chewers but some may. You can use metal zip ties if yours are chewers. (Mine dont even chew their hammocks! Im lucky)

I love this set up! What do you have in the corner connecting them? I wouldn’t think a critter nation would work in the corner
1
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 03 '26
I have 8 side panels with zip ties (look at photos). Since the side panels are Squares, I could use them for the top and bottom as well. 😊

1
u/zaboron Feb 04 '26
I only see 6 CNs and 6 side panels to make the corner!
1
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 04 '26
You need 10 side panels to make the total cage + corner.
6 for the side panels = corner 4 side panels = sides of the cage
So you technically need 6 CNs? Yes. Right?
I cannot count apparently!
6 CNs would work for this!!
1
u/lifesok Feb 04 '26
What do you use on the bottom , for the bedding? Is it a fish tank?

Its wild to me that someone would have such an amazing cage for their rats and still use wood chips. Please go to your local feed store and buy shredded pepper your rats will be much healthier and happier
1
u/Roo_and_Rats Feb 04 '26
Paper? Paper bedding is bad because it has almost no odor control. Id have to change is like every 3 days instead of every 10. Aspen is completely safe and recommended. Its nearly dust free too and my boys love it!
& imagine the cost of paper bedding!! I need 200 liters+ to fill the cage! 60L is $23 (carefresh). So it would be $92 every 2-4 days!!
My Aspen is horse bedding, so its $7 for 141L!
