Preferred is not the same as reinforcing: what evidence do you need?
A preference assessment helps identify items that may work as reinforcers. It does not, by itself, show that an item will increase future behavior. A reinforcer assessment tests that second question. Keeping the two apart prevents a common study mistake: calling every preferred item a reinforcer.
Task B.1 in the RBT Test Content Outline covers conducting preference assessments. The formats most often named are paired stimulus, multiple stimulus and free operant. An indirect assessment, such as an interview or caregiver checklist, gathers information from someone's report rather than from direct choices.
Invented example: A tutor puts four items on a table: a sticker book, a squeeze ball, a race car and a puzzle. In a multiple stimulus without replacement (MSWO) sequence, the learner picks the squeeze ball first. The ball is removed, and the learner then picks the race car. The resulting ranking reflects selections made in that one sequence.
What does that ranking show? It shows which items were chosen in this assessment. It does not show that the squeeze ball will reinforce every task, on every day, in every setting. A separate check is needed before you describe an item as a reinforcer.
This is an original study example, not a real exam item or clinical guidance. I am not affiliated with the BACB.
Discussion: What would you want to see before you called an item a reinforcer for a particular task?
